She's dying isn't she?

Mum discharged herself from hospital today.

Hiatus hernia. She can't eat or drink anything. Literally throws it straight back up.

Can't walk because her lower back is buggered.

UTI in blood. Been given antibiotics but nothing seems to be giving her a boost.

Sat in a sodding chair for 36 hours at A&E. Not slept for at least 48. Said she just wanted to go home.

I'm really scared 😭

MNHQ EDIT to gently suggest that MNers new to this thread take the time to read through all of the OP's posts before answering

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne Read OPs posts. Said an ambulance had taken her in but no update since.

Sorry, I missed that.

MrsPrendergast · 09/11/2025 15:17

@McSteamyorMcdreamy How's Mum?

Coachgirl · 09/11/2025 18:03

Hope your mum is doing OK OP ❤️

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 11/11/2025 07:11

Hi all.

Apologies, it's been a bit mental.

So ambulance on Saturday refused to take her in so we spent Saturday and Sunday at home with no improvement.

Yesterday called GP who said her blood tests on Friday were very abnormal and to call 999 for ambulance. Paramedics got there and after an hour of heated, but polite debate they reluctantly took her In.

Blood tests showed infection markers were higher than they were on Friday and then now think the back pain isn't just because of the wear and tear as per the X-ray and it's either an infection in her spine or cancer.

They found her a bed within 30 minutes.IV fluids as still hasn't eaten anything and IV antibiotics.

MRI later today 😔

So sorry OP but glad she’s in hospital getting help now finally. I keep hearing so many stories like this. It makes me so angry how shit the NHS is and how much of a battle it is to get help.

alphabetQ · 11/11/2025 07:30

So the GP didn't even call you with the results?! You called them?!

I wish I was surprised by this level of negligence, but I'm not. I'm so sorry you all are going through this and I hope your mum is able to make a full recovery.

NewAgeNewMe · 11/11/2025 07:47

Oh bless you. Sending positive thoughts your way for your mum and you x

Rightsraptor · 11/11/2025 08:11

Thank you for the update. I hadn't posted but was following it.

Such dreadful service from the NHS but Im glad you stuck to your guns and I really hope all turns out to be benign. X

Freysimo · 11/11/2025 08:14

I'm so sorry OP. Your instincts were right, over the "professionals". I hope mum is OK and she's lucky to have you to advocate for her.

Testing123546 · 11/11/2025 08:37

I’m so sorry about your treatment you received.
I am not surprised however, I had a family member call for an ambulance who didn’t come. They unfortunately passed away 30 minutes later.

I hope now your mum is in hospital, she will receive the care she needs x

I hope they check her back pain for a kidney infection. My back hurt so, so badly when I thought it was just a UTI. Then my DH took me to the hospital and they did the kidney test and it was a severe kidney infection. Was in the hospital for 10 days and was worried I would need dialysis

I'm glad the medics finally got some sense and took her in and that she's now getting help. I hope she starts to feel better very soon. Mumsnet {{HUGS}} to you and your Mom.

OrlandointheWilderness · 11/11/2025 09:20

Good luck for the MRI. Well done OP.

Uricon2 · 11/11/2025 09:21

@McSteamyorMcdreamy I'm sorry you have had such a fight but glad she is in hospital and hope everything works out well for her. If it's of any comfort, it isn't always the 'worst case' scenario (that they have to consider), I was told on admission in July they suspected necrotising fasciitis but after scans etc it was sepsis. Some of the IV antibiotic options are very strong and very effective.

anyolddinosaur · 11/11/2025 09:22

Why didnt you take her back in on Saturday or Sunday yourself? I hope she improves on the antibiotics.

KoalaKoKo · 11/11/2025 09:33

I am so sorry that happened to you. Well done for advocating for your mum, I hope they find the cause and she gets better soon.

The GP didn't do the bloods in the first place, they were done in hospital so the hospital are responsible. The GP was probably just reading them on the system when the OP phoned up yesterday. if the OP just took her mum to a&e then it would have taken a couple of days for the admission to feed through to the GP. I don't know if the hospital had the results before the patient discharged herself but if they didn't then when they found out they should have phoned her up and got her back in.
Not the GPs fault from the info we have here.

Ohmygodthepain · 11/11/2025 10:54

Oh love. Sorry it's been such a shit show. But glad she's finally getting the support she needs. When it works, the NHS works phenomenally well. Fingers crossed for a concise treatment plan!

Nessiesfoodprovider · 11/11/2025 10:59

Thinking of you, glad she is finally in hospital with a bed.
I hope she recovers well.

didgeridid · 11/11/2025 11:06

No advice other than make sure she stays this time.
I know how scary these times are so just sending love ❤️

Nefrititi · 11/11/2025 11:27

Sending love and hope your Mum finally receives the care she deserves in hospital xx

We couldn't move her. She was bed bound. The paramedics refused to take her in and we couldn't move her ourselves.

Paramedics had to get her out in one of those chairs yesterday. It wasn't for want of trying I can assure you!

Your posts are confusing - why were the paramedics refusing to take her? Then saying they took her in a chair?
Why were they refusing?

I suspect OP is probably a bit overwhelmed from stress so it's understandable she maybe a little all over the place.

For what it's worth, my understanding is that they refused over the weekend, dunno why. Maybe as she had discharged herself previously and they aren't a taxi service? I dunno 🤷‍♀️

Then took her yesterday in the chair after the GP had provided the abnormal blood results that she was seriously ill.

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 11/11/2025 13:18

Ambulance breakdown:

Thursday we called. They refused to even send one and as she was down stairs we managed to get her in a car.

Friday evening she discharged herself, we managed to get her into bed.

Saturday we called ambulance as she talking rubbish - in and out of talking to us. They came out but refused to take her in as she had been given antibiotics at home. We said we wanted her in and they said it would be down to us but we couldn't get her downstairs.

Sunday she was at home all day.

Yesterday I called GP to arrange some more pain relief for her and she said her bloods taken on Friday were abnormal and that I had to call 999 for an ambulance as she needed to be in hospital. Paramedics arrived and asked why we had called. When told it was GP due to abnormal bloods head paramedic said well that's not a hospital job, the GP should come to house to do more considering she was taking antibiotics.

After sometime, back and forth and a call to the paramedic consultant they finally took her in.

Hopefully that clears things up!
