She's dying isn't she?

Mum discharged herself from hospital today.

Hiatus hernia. She can't eat or drink anything. Literally throws it straight back up.

Can't walk because her lower back is buggered.

UTI in blood. Been given antibiotics but nothing seems to be giving her a boost.

Sat in a sodding chair for 36 hours at A&E. Not slept for at least 48. Said she just wanted to go home.

I'm really scared 😭

MNHQ EDIT to gently suggest that MNers new to this thread take the time to read through all of the OP's posts before answering

Okay so I don't want to alarm you and I considered whether or not I should post this as I don't want to worry you but this exact thing happened to my Mum. Same symptoms, same issues.

The back ache that was giving her so much pain was the UTI had spread to her kidneys. We called an ambulance because she was in so much pain and delirious. She was put on intravenous antibiotics but the infection turned to sepsis. The hospital were quick to notice the sepsis and treated her quickly but my Mum passed away. It happened so quickly and it was devastating how quickly the sepsis got hold of her. There was nothing else the hospital could do for her. My Mum was only 69.

Please make sure they take this seriously. Mention her kidneys, and please, please ask 'could this be sepsis?' and if they say no ask how they can be sure.

I am hoping and praying that its just a nasty UTI that can be sorted quickly and without issue but I couldn't read your post without saying something and making you aware of what happened to my beautiful Mumma.

Sending best wishes and positive vibes. xx

Unfortunately you have to fight for your health these days, and I often wonder if you can't fight for yourself hopefully you have someone who can. Seen so many elderly die as too ill to advocate for themselves in these situations. Go into hospital with her, keep on at the reception every half an hour, keep on at the medical team and whoever else will listen. Your voice is your power. My husband was left in A&E for hours with a UTI then sent home with useless antibiotics. He started vomiting once home, so I marched him back to hospital were it was discovered he had sepsis and the Dr couldn't believe he had been discharged. He couldn't have done this on his own as too ill, I fought and fought to get him seen properly.

SoUncertain · 08/11/2025 13:00

Wishing her a speedy recovery xx

Creamteasandbumblebees · 08/11/2025 13:04

A few years ago my mum (76 at the time) had a UTI, I'd only seen her 3 days prior, but I was stunned at how ill she was, she couldn't get up, was shaking from head to toe, her jaw was shaking so much she couldn't talk, ear or drink. The antibiotics shed been put on weren't working and my dad called me as he was so worried. As soon as I saw her I called the gp who sent a paramedic. She was taken into hospital for 12 hours, given fluids and IV antibiotics and sent home. 24 hours later when I went over she was doing the ironing like nothing had happened. People underestimate how severe the effects of a UTI can be.

This is too true. It shouldn’t be that the most vulnerable suffer without an advocate. The most vulnerable should have more protection. It has really upset me how much I’ve had to fight for my mum to get proper care. I honestly think she’d be dead already without our intervention. With my own children I’ve needed to be sharp elbowed and pushy. My daughter has a kidney infection as a baby as it was dismissed as viral by paediatrics. I wasn’t happy and went back. I’ll still never forget the patronising tone the next morning of the junior doctor who was like ‘oh back here again are we’. Less than an hour later she’s turned blue and started fitting which unsurprisingly got the attention of everyone there. The gp has sent her in the day before as red flag sepsis.

LIZS · 08/11/2025 13:16

You can be very poorly with a uti. Fluids might be easier to cope with, light soup etc. Be aware of signs of sepsis but it should improve with abs.

Basilandparsleyandmint · 08/11/2025 13:29

My mum 77 had a UTI and it was the most I’ll have seen her. Apart from the pain it made her vomit a lot.
you must get her seen as she needs antibiotics as she will be feeling absolutely dreadful and thinking clearly.
good luck

If you have the wherewithal, make a complaint to the hospital.

Call 111. Oh it's the fkng weekend now so surgery would be shut.

I'm not a medic but see if she can stay hydrated, even though she's throwing up

About what?? If there are no beds there are no bloody beds?

Lanzarotelady · 08/11/2025 13:33

PlumpHobbit · 08/11/2025 00:18

Id be inclined to call an ambulance it might hasten her route into potentially being admitted, especially if theres a risk of sepsis

Makes no difference to waiting times, you are still triaged and put in a q!

Sepsis! A UTI if not correctly treated can cause sepsis and without prompt treatment sepsis can kill!

Mumsnet is obsessed with sepsis!
Not every infection leads to sepsis!

agree

my grandmother had a UTI and she was hallucinating, thought she was in the workhouse and her son had died.

can you take her to another A&E where possibly the hospital will have beds?

this is such a wretched time for you and hope things are better today

where is this magical hospital that will have more beds???

CheeriosOrFrosties · 08/11/2025 20:20

Hope she is ok @McSteamyorMcdreamy

When there weren't bed in the city hospital there were in the town hospital 10 miles away.

anyolddinosaur · 08/11/2025 21:00

Hopefully she is in a bed now.

CagneyNYPD1 · 08/11/2025 21:16

I hope your mum is getting help now @McSteamyorMcdreamyand keeping everything crossed that she recovers very quickly.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 08/11/2025 21:16

anyolddinosaur · 08/11/2025 21:00

Hopefully she is in a bed now.

Well, that can only happen if she went back to the hospital.........

Pancakeflipper · 08/11/2025 21:32

Hope things are going OK and your mum is getting medical.help.

SpinandSing · 08/11/2025 21:36

I really hope that's she ok and gets the care she needs x

Mischance · 08/11/2025 22:48

It is a huge shame that she did not stay to be admitted. I have been in the situation of sitting in A&E overnight waiting for a bed to be freed up.... several times. It really is the only way to get admitted nowadays. You need to take her back and persuade her to sit it out this time.

Murphs1 · 08/11/2025 23:24

I would definitely take her back, she’s obviously very unwell and sounds like she needs admitting to hospital for treatment. If she vomiting she is not going to feel better any time soon without appropriate treatment. Trust your instincts and persuade your mum to go back x

Mumsnet is obsessed with sepsis!
Not every infection leads to sepsis!

Mumsnet being 'obsessed' with sepsis is what saved a posters life a few years ago when she posted from her bed feeling incredibly unwell, not dissimilar to the OP's mum.

It hadn't occurred to her that she may have been septic and wouldn't have called herself an ambulance had she not been strongly encouraged to do so.

As a sepsis survivor myself I'm always glad to see people asking "could it be sepsis?"

It saves lives.

And do you not think they will be earmarked for the patients in their A&E or assessment units?

anyolddinosaur · 09/11/2025 09:46

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne Read OPs posts. Said an ambulance had taken her in but no update since.
