Animal Discrimination

As we know, dogs are allowed in John Lewis now, because they have a keen interest in homeware and soft furnishings.

But what about other animals? Why aren’t they allowed? For example, a well trained helper monkey, or maybe a snake? I’d argue a snake is probably less intrusive than a dog, especially a very big, slow moving, obvious one.

My chinchilla has a voucher for free coffee and cake in the cafe but can’t get into the cafe to get the free coffee and cake.

My corner shop has a sign on the door that says"No parrots allowed in shop". I want to know the story behind that.

Celestialmoods · 07/11/2025 12:18

Can your chinchilla be trained as a service animal like a dog can though?

They used to sell aspirin there, but the parrots ate 'em all.

A parrot was probably abusive towards the staff.

Duckyfondant · 07/11/2025 12:21

YABU for the snake idea. I would never be able to go out shopping again

Coffeeishot · 07/11/2025 12:23

Yabu on the helper monkey that is incredibly cruel, you could take your cat though they also like a soft furnishing !

Serencwtch · 07/11/2025 12:24

Yeah it's annoying as I used to ride my horse to the pub garden & local park for an ice cream from the kiosk but both now only allow dogs which is annoying.

BluntPlumHam · 07/11/2025 12:26

Tired of the dog culture in this country. It’s out of hand. The pavements near us are always shit smeared. Signs about fines everywhere but no enforcement.

If anyone knows of a super robust dog repellent please let me know. Irresponsible owners are letting their dogs urinate on our fence and post.

Is your pub in the wild west does.it have tie up posts ?

VenusClapTrap · 07/11/2025 12:32

YANBU, my guinea pigs are offended by this.

Although… when I was a kid there was a pet shop in our local indoor market that had a resident myna bird in a cage by the entrance. As you approached it would shout aggressively “WHAT YER DOIN’’?!” or occasionally, if you were lucky, “SHUT THE BLOODY DOOR VERA!”

So I can understand birds that might have a propensity to swear being banned from the genteel halls of John Lewis.

shellyleppard · 07/11/2025 12:33

@Washingbasquait i think a snake would get too comfortable in the soft furnishings department. Could you get a takeaway for the chinchilla?? 🤭😁

Yes, there's a rail outside. I didn't think it was that unusual, I can think of quite a few pubs that have them!!! Just my world I guess!

MeganM3 · 07/11/2025 12:40

Dogs in John Lewis?! For the love of god WHY. It is completely ridiculous the number of dogs being kept as pets… they are absolutely everywhere (and dog shit everywhere) they should not be in shops unless a medical assistance dog.

God that’s silly of them. It’d take you ages to get there riding a dog.

Makes sense near a bridleway for example.

One of our local pubs has a launching area for canoes being on a popular route.

Anyway... dogs in shops. Well behaved, under control etc is OK. But far too many have badly trained owners and are not under control.

Tabitha005 · 07/11/2025 12:46

I'd love it if my cat and I could share some quality time in the JL cafe together and then go for a browse around the shop. He'd love that..... and he can scratch THEIR furniture instead of mine.

PixieandMe · 07/11/2025 12:51

My 2 tabby girls told me this morning over Cornflakes and Sheba that they read about this in the 'Pussy Papers'.

As they also have a keen interest in homeware and especially, soft furnishings they inform me that the are petitioning Parliament.

Go my girls!

ScholesPanda · 07/11/2025 12:52

My mate Gavin would like to bring his tarantula. Definitely discrimination OP

qercv · 07/11/2025 12:53

Oh can I take my emotional support guinea pigs to JL?

ACatAndHerRoboVac · 07/11/2025 12:53

Do you have a monkey or snake OP?

Years ago a local man used to take his cat to the local pub. The cat would sit on his shoulders or head all night. Very cute.

I love seeing dogs in places, it’s better than them being left for hours at home alone. In our local John Lewis a couple of the staff keep dog treats with them and most of the staff give all the dogs that go in lots of fuss. My dogs look for them as soon as they go in and they’ve only been in there half a dozen times. 😂

You know I think I do discriminate because I have a soft spot for cats … there’s one that likes to come and chill in our garden and uses the far end soil patch as a toilet … I just let him/her. He/she buries it into the soil so I guess sort of tidies up after it’s self.

A few months back, DD came home from our little local Sainsburys saying that there was a woman in there with a parrot on her shoulder! So I guess it's a thing!

You're right though OP, my cats hate being left home alone. I'm sure they'd love to come shopping with me! But I wouldn't even if it were allowed, as it's pretty bloody obvious that animals do not belong in shops! (genuine assistance dogs aside).

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 07/11/2025 12:56

Our local Asda usually has a parrot in it...
