Animal Discrimination

As we know, dogs are allowed in John Lewis now, because they have a keen interest in homeware and soft furnishings.

But what about other animals? Why aren’t they allowed? For example, a well trained helper monkey, or maybe a snake? I’d argue a snake is probably less intrusive than a dog, especially a very big, slow moving, obvious one.

My chinchilla has a voucher for free coffee and cake in the cafe but can’t get into the cafe to get the free coffee and cake.

Horses are welcome in a local cafe car park near to where we keep ours , and the local pubs don’t mind the em in their beer gardens either

Saw a dog in H&M this morning. Took me a while to place why it felt so odd.

Owner told it about 8 times to "stop licking the foor" and I was fascinated that the dog was indeed licking the floor.

* We were both behind someone who was faffing with refund so maybe the dog owner would have been in and out? Dog didn't look particularly theft worthy so not sure why it wasn't quickly tied up outside?

Yeah it's annoying as I used to ride my horse to the pub garden & local park for an ice cream from the kiosk but both now only allow dogs which is annoying.

Our butcher has an window that he opens to serve people who stop by on their horses.

My corner shop has a sign on the door that says"No parrots allowed in shop". I want to know the story behind that.

Surely it is an Only Fools and Horses reference.

Dacatspjs · 07/11/2025 12:26

My pub still allows horses, macdonds drive thru doesnt though.

When I was young I worked for a very eccentric lady who let her pony walk through the kitchen to reach the garden.

WorriedRelative · 07/11/2025 14:52

The pub I occasionally visit on horseback has a photo in the bar of the local MFH on his horse inside the bar, he's ducking to avoid the beams. Must have been tight through the door....

My guinea-pigs would only have gone to a JL that had a Waitrose attached.
"You ponce about looking at granola Mother and we'll , erm, rest ourselves in the salad section"

30 minutes and it would look like a plague of locusts had descended

😂

I was in B&M the other day and a man walked in with an African Grey perched on his shoulder. It was very well behaved, but maybe some parrots are more mischievous?

Celestialmoods · 07/11/2025 12:18

Can your chinchilla be trained as a service animal like a dog can though?

Thing is, nobody has a problem with proper service dogs. It's all the idiots with bog standard pet dogs in the shops. I mean really, why the fuck does your dog need to walk round John Lewis?

TeaPr · 07/11/2025 14:56

Greggsit · 07/11/2025 12:19

They used to sell aspirin there, but the parrots ate 'em all.

Excellent wordplay

Suednymph · 07/11/2025 15:01

I think my dogs would ring animal rescue if I brought them to john lewis.

Devilsmommy · 07/11/2025 15:04

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 07/11/2025 13:25

I don’t shop in store at John Lewis since their ridiculous dog policy. Why would I want my Egyptian Cotton with a side of dog saliva? 🤢

This is exactly how I feel. Why would I want to buy clothing or soft furnishings that some dog has brushed against or slobbered on or even sat on? I don't care what dog owners say, all dogs fucking stink so why should I pay good money for something that's got dog reek all over it🤨

The pubs here offer water and hay for horses, how else do you get home blind drunk if you aren't on your horse who knows the way?

Because he can't cycle

For some reason, people are too scared to challenge

Probably because of the grief they get if they do challenge. I’m sick to the back teeth of people claiming to have assistance dogs that come into my business, a lot are very clearly untrained. Even the official guidance states there’s no legal requirement for an assistance dog to be trained under the 2010 Equality Act. Businesses can’t refuse these pretend assistance dogs even if there’s cultural or religious reasons or someone has an allergy to the dog. If someone says it’s an assistance dog then it has to be taken at face value and basically to hell what everyone thinks. I’ve had “assistance” dogs come in in prams, people have tried to put them on my seating and I’ve lost count of the number of times they’ve fouled in my premises, the worst part is you can’t even charge for the clean up! I’ve been threatened with court action twice for telling them to leave after the dogs fouled, one also attacked a working guide dog. Well behaved assistance dogs are more than welcome.

I have dogs, I’m a dog lover but they don’t need to be everywhere. There really needs to be some sort of law put in place for determining a legitimate assistance dog.

You can still be prosecuted for being drunk in charge of a horse if you're riding on a public road or bridleway. They have to prove drunk though as I don't think the legal limits for cars apply (I can't think of any examples where it's been tested).

I was once in a W H Smith at Holborn in London where a woman was walking around the shop with a parrot on her shoulder. Parrot was very well behaved.

Ohhh it has happened, in Bradford I have read a few, this was NYorks:

We use the bridleway, the road would be reckless endangerment of an animal if your so wasted you slump to the side and fall asleep (I have genuinely seen this on more than 1 ocassion)

I’ve certainly taken my pony to the pub (garden / car park) a few times in the past.

My dwarf hamster is pretty well travelled and has been to my dentist, my PT gym and Fortnum. She’s probably one of the few pets that has travelled in the pods at Heathrow T5, and had her own seat and ticket in First Class on a TGV (had to buy a ‘dog ticket’)

Although I noticed this week that a hotel we usually stay in when travelling at Christmas has suddenly changed their T&Cs to exclude any animals except dogs from staying there which potentially scuppers our travel plans next month. So that’s definitely animal discrimination!

I have a friend whose cat was the first feline to travel on Concorde. He used to refer to her as his ‘supersonic pussy.’

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2025 17:50

Haffiana · 07/11/2025 14:10

I agree OP. It is discrimination, and I suspect it is aimed against pet bison.

As the old song goes:
oh give me a home where the buffalo roam….
….and I’ll show you a house with a very messy carpet.

You're not telling me that the dogs I frequently see in Pets at Home are service trained?!

Pets shops allowing pets seems pretty reasonable to me!

Yes, there's a rail outside. I didn't think it was that unusual, I can think of quite a few pubs that have them!!! Just my world I guess!

Several pubs in my world too. Also a very nice cafe!

A friend of mine used to ride her horse to the pub, she said it was the best pub transport as she could get shit faced and the horse would still get her home 😂
