Animal Discrimination

As we know, dogs are allowed in John Lewis now, because they have a keen interest in homeware and soft furnishings.

But what about other animals? Why aren’t they allowed? For example, a well trained helper monkey, or maybe a snake? I’d argue a snake is probably less intrusive than a dog, especially a very big, slow moving, obvious one.

My chinchilla has a voucher for free coffee and cake in the cafe but can’t get into the cafe to get the free coffee and cake.

My pub still allows horses, macdonds drive thru doesnt though.

My local mcdonald does.

Is this one of those thinly-disguised metaphor threads about being unable to access somewhere as a wheelchair user, or anti-trans?

If not, no to dogs and parrots in shops. Cats and snakes welcome.

Deadringer · 07/11/2025 13:23

Last time i was in lidl there was a chap there with a parrot on his shoulder, and recently, in a different town, my dd was asked to mind a man's parrot while he popped into a newsagents. Who knew parrots were so popular.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 07/11/2025 13:25

Congratulations on starting the 5th dog hate thread of the week. For what purpose? Just to be crass, seemingly.
I'm sure I could take my Maine Coon shopping if I had the inclination, but I don't think she'd like it any more than my dog would, so I take neither.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 07/11/2025 13:25

I don’t shop in store at John Lewis since their ridiculous dog policy. Why would I want my Egyptian Cotton with a side of dog saliva? 🤢

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/11/2025 13:26

I’ve certainly taken my pony to the pub (garden / car park) a few times in the past.

My dwarf hamster is pretty well travelled and has been to my dentist, my PT gym and Fortnum. She’s probably one of the few pets that has travelled in the pods at Heathrow T5, and had her own seat and ticket in First Class on a TGV (had to buy a ‘dog ticket’)

Although I noticed this week that a hotel we usually stay in when travelling at Christmas has suddenly changed their T&Cs to exclude any animals except dogs from staying there which potentially scuppers our travel plans next month. So that’s definitely animal discrimination!

There's a Hawk-man locally known for frequenting the local retail park with his hawk. I've never seen him actually, maybe he is half hawk half man. But he still needs his bits from B&M and Home Bargains like everyone else. 🦅

I have two MCs. One would be terrified. The other (red, of course) would shoplift. I do see a couple of MCs out in pushchairs and on leads. Taking cats out as if they were dogs is attention seeking IMO.

Maybe people really are THAT sick of dogs. I know dog people don’t want to hear it and seem to find it horribly offensive for some reason but perhaps it’s a sign people need to start listening to the issues rather than dismissing it as hand wringing over nothing

millymollymoomoo · 07/11/2025 13:32

Would rather walk round a shop with dogs than bored husbands and screaming toddlers.

personally don’t see why people need to take either !

millymollymoomoo · 07/11/2025 13:33

@CoubousAndTourmaIet id definitely shop there if you took your Maine coon

I agree. All of ours have loved their home and garden but wouldn't have enjoyed being paraded around in public places.

They used to sell aspirin there, but the parrots ate 'em all.

Only 3 post in and you win the thread 😆🐦

Is your pub in the wild west does.it have tie up posts ?

A pub near us allows horses and yes, has posts to tie them and straw in bags for each horse to eat whilst waiting. It’s really cute

OrlandointheWilderness · 07/11/2025 12:40

God that’s silly of them. It’d take you ages to get there riding a dog.

Especially if it is a jack Russell

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 07/11/2025 14:01

Walked passed a shop (this is no a lie) that had a no-entry sign for camels. so like a black camel outline with a cross through.

Haffiana · 07/11/2025 14:10

I agree OP. It is discrimination, and I suspect it is aimed against pet bison.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/11/2025 14:13

For many years now, I have wanted a pygmy hippopotamus but because of shop keepers frowning whenever I had ventured to ask if they would mind if I brought one into their shop I have been discouraged, although I have stressed that there have been NO recorded attacks in the U.K. by any hippopotamuses - large or small.
It does seem just so unfair.

Oh can I take my emotional support guinea pigs to JL?

My guinea-pigs would only have gone to a JL that had a Waitrose attached.
"You ponce about looking at granola Mother and we'll , erm, rest ourselves in the salad section"

30 minutes and it would look like a plague of locusts had descended

It would have to be a female hippo. Apparently adult male hippos are really sexually aggressive. You do not want to have to drag a pillow-humping hippo out of the soft furnishings department of your local John Lewis.

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 07/11/2025 12:56

Pic..

That's a galah.
Im not telling my dogs that they can go in JL, they will expect to go with me on my rare days up the Toon. And they would both expect to be allowed to test all the sofas. I love my dogs, but can I just have the occasional break from them?

Crunchymum · 07/11/2025 14:33

Saw a dog in H&M this morning. Took me a while to place why it felt so odd.

Owner told it about 8 times to "stop licking the foor" and I was fascinated that the dog was indeed licking the floor.

* We were both behind someone who was faffing with refund so maybe the dog owner would have been in and out? Dog didn't look particularly theft worthy so not sure why it wasn't quickly tied up outside?

PastaAllaNorma · 07/11/2025 14:35

There's a bloke in town who does his shopping with an aged bearded dragon on his shoulder.

Beekman · 07/11/2025 14:36

Was in a nail salon yesterday and a woman comes in for her appointment but spots the owner’s dog wandering about and said she was sorry but she can’t be around dogs for extended periods of time so will have to cancel and the salon TRIED TO CHARGE HER FOR THE CANCELLATION! She told them where to stick it. I won’t be going back. New York City has a new policy about only allowing officially certified assistance animals in public places and not emotional support and it has made a huge difference to the amount of animals you see in Whole Foods etc. The UK needs something similar. Seriously, dogs are everywhere in the UK now, I notice it when I go over for a holiday. Took my three year old nieces to Costa and we had to leave because there were two massive dogs laying on the floor growling. I know there are plenty of lovely dogs too but you just don’t know. When did it become a thing to insist on taking your dogs into everywhere?

Needmorelego · 07/11/2025 14:40

Practically every railway station and supermarket seems to have a resident cat these days.
Which should be a legal requirement 😺
