Mum guilt after taking son to a concert

Confusedpige0n · 07/11/2025 00:57

I took my 11 year old son to see McFly vs Busted. He loved every second of it, About 30 minutes to the end of the 2 1/2 hour concert i suddenly thought I should have given him ear plugs to wear. It never crossed my mind to take them for him. I’m now feeling like the worst parent in the world and that I’ve damaged his hearing. I can’t believe I didn’t even think of it, perimenopause brain has me forgetting all sorts lately but this is unforgivable and I feel absolutely awful that I could have caused irreparable damage. Has anyone taken their children to concerts and they’ve been fine? I’ve wound myself up so much since we came home that I’ve been sick and can’t sleep I’m wracked with guilt about how irresponsible I’ve been.

Do you have anxiety issues? He'll be fine.

Enko · 07/11/2025 01:02

He loved it. Had a grwat time and you made a memory that will last him his life time.

Think about that.

You are a good mum

BauhausOfEliott · 07/11/2025 01:04

You’re being ridiculous. It’s fine. You sound like someone with a major anxiety problem - are you hyper anxious about other things?

Of course other kids go to concerts and are fine.

I’m perimenopausal I’m just a ball of anxiety at the minute 🙈

Kids have been going to concerts without ear plugs for years

You really need to relax

That might be it. Sounds like he had a great time no need to worry.

If you’re so anxious over this (a non-problem) that you’ve been physically sick, you definitely need to see a doctor about that. This is a really disproportionate response and is not normal.

You’re right I actually do, it’s bloody google I’ve gone down a spiral and convinced myself I’ve deafened him. Doom scrolling and hormones are a bad combo.

Literally not a problem, he'll be fine (unless you're planning to do it every night)

Just in case this happens to anyone else; ask security or first aid they almost always have some available.

GoodVibesHere · 07/11/2025 01:35

Think about how many people were at the concert. I expect a teeny weeny tiny proportion of them were wearing ear plugs.

Thanks, I just needed someone to talk sense to me as being sat by myself I’ve wound myself up 🙄 - I didn’t realise staff could have ear plugs to give out , good shout.

Aw bless you. He will be fine. I can identify with the anxiety - let’s not even talk about why I’m awake at this hour! I once slept on the floor of my son’s room on holiday because he had drunk some seawater and I’d convinced myself he might ‘dry drown’ in the night. My mum who was with us thought I was mad. Obvs he was fine. Hope you sleep ok. And yes ask for help about peri symptoms. My GP wouldn’t give me any help but I went on the pill ( to get progesterone!) and that helped me x

Get a grip op. One concert?

pincklop · 07/11/2025 03:26

If it hurt his ears he’s old enough to tell you or cover his ears. If he’s having a great time and not too loud it’s probably not doing any damage. Not saying it’s perfect. But it’s only internet makin you doubt yourself. Trust your instincts that you thought he was fine at the time and your probably right x

MYOB12 · 07/11/2025 05:47

Both DC’s first ever concert was McFly! The arena was full of kids, didn’t see any ear defenders (there may well have been some worn but I don’t recall seeing any). They were both younger than yours and went to a few more gigs as youngsters/teens and are absolutely fine. Unless you’re sat right by the speakers I wouldn’t worry about it.

IwishIhadcheese · 07/11/2025 05:52

He’s 11, not 11 months. If it had hurt his ears he would have said.

MaggieBsBoat · 07/11/2025 05:57

I was stood next to a (what looked like a 5 year old) at a Rammstein gig last year. No ear defenders. That was a bit weird.

I took my 10 year old to a concert a couple of months ago and he took them off. I tried them and realised he could hardly hear anything.
Your son will be fine just don’t do it every night!
More important is the fact he had a cool time with his mum!

You didn't realize that ear defenders would stop him hearing the music?

What exactly did you think was their purpose 😂😂😂

That's not how hearing damage works unfortunately. But one concert is not a problem. I'd definitely get some good plugs and the habit of using them if it will be a more regular thing.

Empathy not your strong suit eh?

EleanorReally · 07/11/2025 06:44

he is 11 not 3
there will have been other 11 year olds
and anyway, would he have even worn them?

bignewprinz · 07/11/2025 06:54

Your brain is catatrophising. I am the master of this, and it's definitely 100x worse now I am in peri. I can tell you what your brain won't let you tell yourself: he will be fine X

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 07/11/2025 06:58

DS is now 13, he’s seen Queen, Sting, Duran Duran, Bryan Adams. His first concert he was 10- Queen. He didn’t wear ear plugs. He’s fine.

hmmnotreallysure · 07/11/2025 07:01

Ah op, I sympathise, perimenopausal anxiety is awful and illogical!!
Don't worry about it though, sounds like he had a fab time!
