Wonderofwimbledon · 06/11/2025 20:33

We’re absolutely financially at our limit… I’m so incredibly stressed. An income tax rise will break us and we won’t be able to afford it. We won’t have money to eat.

What do you think it’ll be? I just want to curl up and cry- we can’t take anymore increases our bills , mortgage everything has increased we have no spare money at all

No, I presumed they earned less than 45k.

My apologies you did say that. Yes it is often MW earners who are told to get a better job, cut back, move to a cheaper area even if miles away from family. So why can't the likes of OP be told that as well?

OldMaaa · 07/11/2025 12:56

That's labour in a nutshell. Fucking over actual productive members of society to pay for the non-productive ones. This system is broken.

I feel the same as you Op, it is incredibly depressing. We work so hard, and our quality of life is only getting worse. WTF is the point?

You can tell half the country to sell their house and stop drinking coffee so that you can get a minimum wage pay rise and an uplift in benefits if you want, but you can’t expect them to continue to fund your lifestyle under the next Government.

What lifestyle?

BionicWomansAnkle · 07/11/2025 13:42

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 07/11/2025 13:34

What lifestyle?

You need to pay £17k income tax per household on average to break even with government spending. A person on minimum wage pays around £2700. The other £14k is largely made up by the people you are saying should move house so they can pay a bit more. That lifestyle.

I am saying that if you are struggling like OP then yes it is right to ask if she can cut back everywhere. Just because she might pay more tax doesn't mean she is exempt from that advice. Perhaps OP should sell her house for a cheaper one?

quartile · 07/11/2025 13:48

I'm on a good salary, but we spend hours every month checking our spending and looking for ways to save. Carpets are worn, we do diy as best we can.
Looking forward to next tax year for the uplift in child benefit removal from 50-60k to 60k-80k to finally kick through to the pay packet.
Trying to bite my tongue when retired relatives complain they are poor then decide to update their house with new floors and internal doors. They never had their child benefit removed while claiming

Perhaps she should not have to sell her house to pay for other peoples lifestyles, I can’t believe you don’t get this. The entitlement is outrageous.

TeaPr · 07/11/2025 13:58

I haven’t read the thread but I presume that there are lots of people saying why other people should have their taxes raised. Most people don’t want to pay more tax themselves, myself included.

Again what lifestyle is this? Claim benefits like OP has been told to and you will realise most are struggling. More so than many on here.

Are you a robot or chat GP? You know what I meant. It is boring now. Go and benefits bash someone else.

Yes, unfortunately I do know exactly what you mean.

Sell their house. Move to a different area. Give up coffees. Funny you presumed they have no jobs if they are claiming UC.

We don’t claim UC or any benefits at all - we’re in the middle class category. Aka no benefits, all cost out

I figured that as you wouldn't have claimed you would be better off on benefits as you wouldn't get much if any.

Edit. Not even child benefit?

Paganpentacle · 07/11/2025 12:06

Weird....because I.m here working and I definitely earn more than 45k.
Suppose I'm getting shafted again then.

This is what I think is obscene. Those with the broadest shoulder bollocks. I don’t agree with anyone being classed as wealthy unless they have assets. A high salary might be 1 person- children, mortgage etc so the 1% of highest earners might still struggle. We don’t know peoples out going’s or personal circumstances. Every penny they earn might be accounted for so even taking those on higher incomes to me isn’t fair. They need to find ways to raise money by not paying for everyone who are playing the System. All this is doing is making people cross and begrudge working and earning legitimately

I heard a stat yesterday that only 30% of people are net contributors to the state.
It’s quite shocking and clearly unsustainable.

What can be done about that? Look up what you need to earn to be classed as a net contributor.

I was thinking about this. People are always split into you are contributing or in deficit - is noone just neutral. Even a big neutral grouo would help surely.

Agreed, that’s a good point.
I only heard this yesterday, so would like to look into it a bit more I think.

Well that’s because of our current system.
Far more people can be made contributors by changing thresholds, tax rates, benefit entitlement etc.
30% certainly shouldn’t be expected to pay for the other 70% - it will cause disengagement.

Genevieva · 07/11/2025 14:53

I am guessing 2p on the Basic Rate if you earn over £45K a year. If so, I will drop to 80% because it will create a cliff edge.

Whowasthere · 07/11/2025 15:08

@Wonderofwimbledon if you aren't in the higher tax bracket as per your op you should be eligible for child benefit (in England) as it's £50k, definitely get a claim in
