I posted a while back (have name changed since I think) about DP's attitude to food (washing pre-packed lettuce to be specific!).

We went away last weekend on Saturday afternoon and came back on Sunday afternoon. Before we left, we made a jug of real coffee and left the jug in kitchen overnight.

When we came back, I poured out the rest of the coffee, added milk, and, before putting it in the microwave to heat, I took a small sip as the mug was very full. DP shouted in amazement and looked totally horrified. He started ranting about 'don't you know the germs you'll have picked up from doing that'

I then mentioned that - funny that - it was him and most of our friends who came down with a stomach virus a week earlier, but I breezed through without catching anything, despite the fact this virus is apparently highly contagious.

This is messing with my head! I keep the house clean and I really don't think I'm unhygenic, but he's making me doubt myself...

Am i being unreasonable paranoid?

Awaiting new thread wiggy!

Enjoy your windows! Although what you are doing cleaing them at this time of night when you should be watching tv drinking cider and bracing yourself for non hygenic attention from DP is beyond me

Guitargirl · 06/06/2008 22:09

Hmmmm, this is interesting. I am a total slattern about most things and luckily(?) DP and I have similar standards about most things...but...I do wash pre-packed lettuce and I have a thing about reheated meat, especially chicken, won't touch it (well, at least not knowingly) whereas when we go and stay with DP's family, they make a chicken and stick the leftovers in the fridge and microwave, over and over again [shudder].

He's away for weekend, I'm letting my hair down

Guitargirl when we go and visit people like this (some people are fond of serving pinkish chicken on bbqs I find) I become veggie for the day. Always works for me.

wigparty · 06/06/2008 22:14

I am a veggie, have been for 20 years, perhaps I owe my lurgy-free lifestyle to that?

OP posts:
Guitargirl · 06/06/2008 22:17

I think I made some lame excuse the first time and kind of nibbled at the chicken but then the second time it happened I was pregnant and not taking any chances so I just said sorry I don't eat reheated bird. Reckon they think am bonkers but hey ho...we all have our oddities right? Although am sure MIL is probably thinking ok she has a kitchen floor which DD finds crumbs from yesterday's dinner on but she won't eat cooked chicken...

ChukkyPig · 06/06/2008 22:18

I read this about leftovers in the paper the other day. What's wrong with having roast chicken, refrigerating the leftovers, having cold meat the next day and then currying the rest?

Do people really throw meat away?

I wouldn't microwave a bit of meat to kind of pretend I was having roast chicken again, but having it cold/cooking it up, do people really think that's not right? Seriously I'm interested. I was surprised by the thing in the paper.

Wiggy!!, I hope you are viewing some unsuitable websites and having a crafty drink while DP is away - or watching Grease (ha!) and eating chocolate! Why are you cleaning the windows at this time of night if he isn't even there? I hope you're not buying into his hygenic wipes philosophy!

LuckySalem · 06/06/2008 22:20

Chukky - I see nothing wrong with what your saying. My problem with chicken is microwaving it - Mostly cos of the taste, yuk but also I know that chicken is the worst for illness.

However, cooked meat, then cold butties then curry!! no probs!

wigparty · 06/06/2008 22:20

No way, no fear...only because I haven't cleaned them for a year a long time (a cleaner only has so many pairs of hands!)

Am now enjoying a cool glass of cool white wine and there's a cup of cold coffee sitting on the worktop for tomorrow!

OP posts:
VersdeSociete · 06/06/2008 22:21

Someone plausible told me that reheating coffee in the microwave produces carcinogens which is why I would avoid it...

Guitargirl · 06/06/2008 22:21

I think - although I may be wrong on this - that it's fine to eat cooked chicken cold or reheated (once) as long as it's heated thoroughly enough to kill off any bacteria that are going to cause problems. The problems happen when you reheat the same leftovers over and over or if it's not heated properly. I think.

ChukkyPig · 06/06/2008 22:28

Ahhh... Perfect.

Just don't feel tempted to touch the coffee until it has reached maturity.

ChukkyPig · 06/06/2008 22:33

"Perfect" to wiggy's wine, not minging leftovers!

Happy that I am not weird in what I do with my chicken.

Would also run a mile from anyone proferring microwaved slices of chicken. Am imagining scary landlady/b "n" b type with elderly hair. Or Mrs Doyle from father ted. Only the chicken would be buried in a fruit sponge (gag!).

I've lived in Asia and the standards of hygiene there are next to zero. I don't worry anymore. But when people see me drinking milk that they think is "off", they go mad...

Stop worrying so much. The developed world has gone crazy about hygeine and it really isn't necessary.

wigparty · 09/06/2008 23:14

Sorry guys, it's me again
Today in the garden, a beetle landed on my shoulder (I was wearing a t-shirt). It was quite a big beetle. DP took it off me with a piece of kitchen roll while I stood there screaming and jumping about the place (he had said: don't move there's something really big on your shoulder, cue panic).

When the crisis had calmed, he asked if I wanted to go and have a shower .

I don't know if I'm noticing this stuff more since I first posted about it, but my answer was, 'no, I think I'll be okay'!

I don't think I needed a blinking shower, but again am confused that I maybe should have said yes.

I'm sorry if this sounds really trivial. TBH it's confusing me a lot and I don't know if he is actually living with some unhygenic freak!

As always, would value anyone's input.

I stand by previous post, if it is having an effect on his life (and yours) then he needs to speak to his GP. I'm still not finding that link, will keep trying for you.

wigparty · 10/06/2008 00:07

Thanks TBM, to be honest, I'm feeling really and tonight as I just don't seem to know what's right and what's wrong any more.

I think I'm a clean and healthy person. I dive into the garden (not literally!) and get mucky but I wash, the house is tidy, and this is totally messing with my head now

Don't worry about the link, I'm more than able to find the info myself, I think I'm just worried about how to broach the whole subject and carry on from here.

Thanks for answering

I think these kind of problems like OCD can start to escalate if the person is under stress. Is there anything else going on with him? Could you ask him if hes' got something on his mind because he doesn't seem happy?

wigparty · 10/06/2008 07:42

Hi Madamez,
To be honest, he's less stressed at the moment than he's been since we've been together (unless he is stressed about something he's not telling me about). I didn't know about the link between OCD and stress though, I will ask him if everything's okay this evening. I'm loathe to say he's got ocd, but it is looking a bit that way
thanks

OP posts:
PembsLass · 10/06/2008 09:14

I think it's unreasonable of him and agree with Madamez that it's a bit OCD-ish. To go to the other end of the scale. I was exposed to loads of germs growing up, and even to this day I don't bother washing things, i'll eat food way past the sell by date, and pick things up i've dropped on the floor and eat them.

I can't remember the last time I had a stomach bug. I've also never had flu and only get a cold about once every three years. No exma, no ashma, no hayfever-nothing.

As for cold chicken I think re-heating it the next day is fine-hell what's wrong with eating it cold?. Also, putting it in the microwave kills the bugs so I don't see the problem.

PembsLass · 10/06/2008 09:15

Yeah there's a strong link between OCD and stress. I OCD about locked doors when i'm stressed. Whether or not the OCD is a problem depends on how much he feels it interfers with his life

TinkerbellesMum · 10/06/2008 15:43

The one I am thinking of is a quiz, well there are two. One is for you to fill in if you are worried about having OCD, the other is if you think someone you are close to has it. It's a pretty indepth quiz, I didn't realise how many things I do are OCD - I knew I had it already, but as I'm not the cleaning type it's pretty much been missed until recently.

Found it while I was typing!

Greyriverside · 10/06/2008 17:00

If two people have a different opinion it doesn't mean one of them is wrong and needs medical help. You should get used to each others ways and accept them.

Also when people don't want to eat something they consider 'dirty' it's not just about catching something.

If we discovered a new drug that prevented ALL disease we still wouldn't eat half a sandwich we'd spotted in the gutter would we.
