Is the way this Government is behaving normal for a Government?

I don’t remember briefings weeks before budgets telling us how bad they’d be, constant kite flying regarding tax raises almost immediately after one budget has ended, regularly finding ‘black holes’ that almost exactly match up to money they’ve just spent and constantly shifting definitions of who exactly those with ‘the broadest shoulders’ are.
YABU - Yes this has always happened
YANBU -No this is not ordinary

I agree OP not normal. There a desperate and nervous energy to their every move.

GreenSox · 06/11/2025 09:21

They all seem to be the same. I don’t like this current government and I didn’t like the last. It feels like what they say they will do, rarely tallies up with what they actually do.

I feel that we’re all full of hope at the start then as the months pass, the same happens. Life is as difficult as ever. The NHS is dire, housing is too expensive, basics are expensive and it’s just not a good standard of living for many. It’s been like this for years and I think the electorate as losing all hope.

I feel like the public are being gas lit tbh

Swiftie1878 · 06/11/2025 09:25

Tbh, I think this is very typical for a Labour government, mostly because the party’s National Executive Committee ‘running’ the party rather than its leader - only Tony Blair changed this (for a short while).
Governing by consensus is always very tricky.

BionicWomansAnkle · 06/11/2025 09:51

I’ve only had a dc and a mortgage for the last three years so I thought perhaps because I have more skin in the game now, I’m paying more attention. The level of of anxiety about what they’ll do next seems to be bordering on close to panic with lots of people, which is definitely something I’ve not picked up on before.

It has been happening for years to some extent. "leaked" information or back room briefings in the run up to major announcements to gauge public opinion.

ElleneAsanto · 06/11/2025 09:56

I lost track of what “normal” should be sometime around Brexshit.

Maybe, but this much and throughout the year almost immediately after the previous budget? Surely yesterday’s briefing can’t be normal though? It didn’t even make any sense or serve any purpose.

I’m probably just getting older and a little more nervous about my family, happens to us all eventually 😥

Shes trying to avoid the immediate market crash after the budget that finished off Kwartang. She knows the reaction is going to be crap so by constantly briefing on this she is pulling the market reaction towards into a drawn out decline, rather than it being a comment on her budget.

Yes this. She’s briefing for the markets.

Trying to calm the markets. It won’t work.
She will increase income tax, and if she’s going to do that (and break a manifesto pledge), I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s up by 2p in the £. The political hit will be there regardless, so she’ll want to get as much out of it as she can, financially.

All ridiculously predictable.

AzurePanda · 06/11/2025 10:31

It is not normal and I thinks it’s disgraceful. It is causing real distress for people and causing everything to grind to a halt.

titchy · 06/11/2025 10:34

It’s typical for all Governments and has been for the last 20 odd years - certainly since the widespread adoption of SM and tinternet. The tories leaked stuff to the Telegraph all the time so gauge opinion.

I dont especially remember it pre the Johnson government, but I felt he started the move to testing every idea in a drip drip via the press and seeing public reaction.

I think every new government has been publicly aghast at the state the previous government left and has then said we have to do something different than the manifesto.

I think the press are really enjoying creating as much of a pre budget frenzy as they can this time though.

IKnowAristotle · 06/11/2025 10:40

The question about briefing the media is quite interesting. It will have always happened to some extent but the media has changed significantly. There is 24/7 information from a huge range of sources. Incomparable to, say, 30 years ago.

I'm not sure it's any different to the last government, however.

StuckAtThisWeight · 06/11/2025 10:40

She's created alot of tension by having the budget so late in the year. This has highlighted that they are scrabbling around behind the scenes trying to figure out what to do.

I agree with the posters who have said she is trying to give it to the markets bit by bit so the reaction is less on budget day.

She's probably also letting the public get used to the idea of all the tax rises so there is less backlash on budget day as everyone has had time to get used to the idea.

No I don't think this budget is normal at all. I think it shrieks of the country is in big trouble, backed into a corner, with no rabbits left to pull out of the hat. They must know they have to cut welfare/benefits as just increasing taxes is going to stall the economy even more.

The market will also be looking to see if she cuts costs (and will react favourably if she does) and won't like it if she does not.

I do think we might be in for some hard times until the country gets back on it's feet. I don't think the 'pain' has started yet.

I've never been particularly interested in the budget before - usually just have a quick glance and it's normally boring stuff that does not affect me - like extra penny on the pint and stuff. This budget seems like it's going to affect everybody and everything. There is also going to be lots of changes that people will not realise or be impacted by right away (changes to pension tax relief etc)

SwordToFlamethrower · 06/11/2025 10:41

I don't watch or listen to the news anymore after being very active in politics since the early 2000s. What I see is the end results without the media spin.

They're building houses includinf soxial housing, bringing back Sure Start, they've started nationalising public services, they started investing in the NHS. We even have a chicken pox vaccination option for kids now. They're investing back into libraries and parks too. Looks and feels like Labour to me.

Genevieva · 06/11/2025 10:42

Ever since they took office they have been fear-mongering and creating uncertainty over future taxes. It’s causing the British economy to experience hugely detrimental capital flight and loss of investment, jobs and revenue.

I don't know anyone panicking. Just stop being chronically online.
