Prices are going up and I can’t get everything I need… AIBU?

I suspect we have anti-Aldi trolls/bots on here.

What a strange thing to say on an AIBU thread about a supermarket.

I agree - anti Aldi trolls? No just folk having different opinions on where they like to shop Confused

I used to love Aldi but I found the quality of the fruit and veg has nosedived in the last year or so, not keeping fresh beyond day of purchase and sometimes not fresh enough to buy on the shelf. Asda not that much better to be honest.

I've switched to Sainsburys, which is definitely more expensive overall but has fresher fruit and vegetables that keep longer. Also the nectar points are handy and Asda's reward programme has tanked.

hollyblueivy · 06/11/2025 07:42

I have noticed my weekly shop at Aldi getting more expensive probably 30% more in around 18 months? I just assumed the prices would be rising at the same rate elsewhere so would still be the cheapest, but perhaps I’ll try Tesco this week and see how I get on. Might do a round robin over the next month of the supermarkets to check pricing as I havent done that in years.

SunnieShine · 06/11/2025 07:49

I was in Aldi last week and it was fine.

Myblueclematis · 06/11/2025 07:51

I'm a devoted Aldi shopper, it's further for me to go but the nearest Lidl has dour staff who rarely say hello, the shop is not that clean looking at times and I find it a bit depressing going in there.

I was in Aldi yesterday, the aisles are wide, the staff usually very friendly and helpful and I like most of their products. I do love perusing the aisle of shite each time, I can guarantee I will pick up something from there. Yesterday it was Christmas lights, multi coloured for £3.99.

I do also shop at Waitrose, M&S and online shop occasionally with Tesco but Aldi is my favourite. 😃

Went to Asda tonight and a basket of shopping was 40 quid and a lot of the shelves were bare. I normally shop at Aldi.

Edited

Asda is the worst lately. More expensive than Sainsburys and never any stock. Our local one never has any fresh fruit or veg in.

And their cheddar cheese is hard and crumbly

That’s what cheddar is supposed to be like 🙈

CurlewKate · 06/11/2025 08:10

Also-if you get the insanely cheap but delicious coquille St Jacques dupes you not only get a lovely supper, you get two terracotta cat dishes for free…..

Ineedanewsofa · 06/11/2025 08:23

@Sparklesandspandexgallore the Aldi ones are a bit disappointing, however I I’ve got a Lidl Orange and Bergamot one in the bathroom and that is brilliant.
Supermarket threads always make me chuckle, especially when people talk about ‘experience’, I actively avoid going into supermarkets unless there’s no choice (having worked in the industry for 10 years!) as I find the whole concept horrible.
I send DH to Aldi or Lidl on a monthly basis for tinned stuff, rice, pasta, cereal, frozen veg and pastries, dog treats, poo bags, cleaning products, loo roll. We don’t buy fresh produce or meat from either one.

CurlewKate · 06/11/2025 08:29

Also Aldi often has free range chicken when the other big shops don’t. Can’t understand the people who won’t buy their meat. The steak is terrific.

dottiedodah · 06/11/2025 08:43

We always shop at Sainsburys .Our parents always did and it's a family tradition now! My DS and his new wife do too. TBH whenever I have shopped elsewhere like Lidl or Aldi it never seems much cheaper .Maybe just me I dont know? Always buy your own brand except for things like Persil as skin reacts to cheaper products

MightyGoldBear · 06/11/2025 08:54

We've stuck to tescos because we find it's actually the same price plus we get clubcard points which we use for to have a holiday. Aldi and lidl don't end up saving us anything especially when you add in travel time. We do tesco deliveries so not in store to do any extra purchases we don't need.

dontcallmelen · 06/11/2025 09:18

@Sparklesandspandexgallore the Aldi velvety rose diffuser is lovely long lasting scent which does waft around I always stock up when I see them any of the other scents I’ve found don’t smell of anything.

Similar to me, my main food shop is in Aldi, and I'm always picking up little household bargains - I also got some lovely christmas lights, mine were £2.99 bargain! And their dupe for Olaplex is fab.
But I do pop into M&S and Waitrose reguarly. Wild horses wouldnt drag me into Asda, its shit these days.

I stopped in 2022. Used to get a click and collect order every week. Prices shot up and with that and top up shops required, finding the fruit and veg poor and poor stock control, it became not enough price difference to warrant the hassle and I started getting Tesco deliveres instead.

Aldi only started the click and collect for Covid. We used it ourselves and was great to avoid contact in those days
They carried on for a while after but
They no longer do it now

suburburban · 06/11/2025 10:07

Good for baking ingredients like ground almonds

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/11/2025 13:57

Peridoteage · 06/11/2025 06:58

I only eat meat (ready rubbed pork chops or chicken) and salad leaves during the week.
Bistro salad in Aldi is 79p. £1.40 in Tesco (£1.15 on Clubcard). £2.30 in M&S

£1.10 in sainsburys with nectar.

So more expensive than Aldi.

Agree they are excellent for baking ingredients.

coldiris · 06/11/2025 14:02

Mostly like everywhere else: some things are ok, others aren't. I do find that they still lack variety in fresh foods (fresh being fruit & veg).

Dunno you can usually tell. I just rolled my eyes, it's like the monthly thread.

Shop there don't shop there. It doesn't matter.

TeddySchnauzer · 06/11/2025 14:21

BatchCookBabe · 05/11/2025 22:51

Stop shopping there and go somewhere else then. Confused

It’s called a discussion! Ya know, what this site is designed for?!
Are you really ‘White Knighting’ for Aldi?! How sad

Exactly. I save £40 a year just on that alone.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 06/11/2025 07:04

Has anyone tried Aldis reed diffusers?
Are they any good? And if so which ones are the best ( so much variety.) Thanks.
Btw I have been using a brand called Cozy Nose but they are expensive.

Aldi ones aren’t great. Lidl on the other hand do lovely ones. The Luxury Collection ( still dirt cheap) is great. Plum and Rosewood smells like my favourite posh clothes store

willstarttomorrow · 06/11/2025 19:26

I have shopped at Aldi for years. One opened near my old office and the car park was always full of high end cars, staff are always pleasant and efficient, quickly refurbished after opening to be a bit less 'just take if off the palette'. There are a few near me in my city, the one in the student area is a bit more hellish but all are absolutely fine. Aldi has gone up in price but is still far cheaper than most supermarkets. Tinned tomatoes, dried pasta, butter etc if you cook. There are always people pile onto these threads and say things go off more quickly. That has never been my experience. Aldi keep costs low by having local suppliers for fruit and veg, so maybe this is specific to certain stores.

willstarttomorrow · 06/11/2025 19:30

Just to add- anything I have ever had to return to Aldi, mainly from the random aisle, there have been no questions asked and things come with a 3 year warranty. It has not been often I have but staff in store have just sorted it, no issue
