Xmas is fast approaching - what threads are you looking forward to?

The responses to Christmas fridges - “people are dying, how dare you show us your shelves full of prosecco, chipolatas and brussels sprouts!"

Family members who cannot possibly leave their anxious goldenoodlepoo alone at home for a couple hours.

‘D’H has bought a £500 turkey carving knife, he’ll be acting like laird of the manor making a big show carving the turkey I slaved away cooking!

Oh I love MIL threads on Xmas day. And big family dramas.

Awful if you are the one in the middle of it all though.

jay55 · 05/11/2025 17:53

The shit presents, the mean mil and the husband who eats the kids selection boxes on Xmas eve and doesn’t see the issue.

Screwyousimon · 05/11/2025 17:57

The vitriol for Xmas eve boxes (must admit I think they are a waste of money).

Shit presents / No presents - usually from husband to wife.

Usually somebody waiting for a proposal that doesn't happen.

Of course MN wouldn't be MN without all of the MIL posts and sighs of "I will never do that again" until the next Xmas of course!

I’m hoping in the midst of all the angst and carnage we’ll see

  1. recommendations for the best of this year’s Christmas themed novels and movies
  2. best new snacks on the shelves
  3. what presents everyone loved
  4. Christmas jumper thread (gorgeous or not so much)
  5. alternative Christmas/winter decor
  6. what’s happening outside (from the chronic curtain twitchers)
  7. any new and exciting romances or even crushes that people have got into
  8. winter fashion thread
  9. where’s everyone volunteering this year or what are they doing for charity
  10. what’s the plan for nye

Bring on the joy ☺️

DH's brother is arriving from abroad on Christmas Eve and bringing his foreign wife with him. They're staying with us for two weeks in our tiny 1-bed flat. BIL has a history of alcoholism, violence and narcissism, SIL is vegan and doesn't speak a word of English.

WHAT SHALL I DO???

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 05/11/2025 18:15

Elf on the Shelf threads. I bloody love ‘em. I reckon there must be several hundred thousand MNers who were once elf enthusiasts who now post to say it’s a load of pointless shite.

And ‘cosy Christmas PJs and hot choc’ threads. They’re always good for some ridicule. Ditto Christmas Eve box threads.

Threads about posters shaking and crying on Christmas Day because the little madam or Lord Fauntleroy turned up their noses at the presents.

🎶 It’s the most wonderful time of the year 🎶

Clementine12 · 05/11/2025 18:18

Shit presents

Shit visits to in-laws and being starved etc

Chemenger · 05/11/2025 18:22

I look forward to being told that Santa Claus is an American invention and that all British people call him Father Christmas (no they don’t, by the way).

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2025 18:22

I absolutely love the Christmas fridge thread. People playing jenga with Stilton, sprouts & profiteroles. Probably my favourite thread of the year.

YelramBob · 05/11/2025 18:25

Sadly, there will always be the threads from the women who tie themselves up in knots trying to create the perfect Christmas Day while their lazy arse husbands and ungrateful children sit around complaining.

I always read those threads and hope these women find their menopausal rage and file for divorce in January.

CountFucula · 05/11/2025 18:25

I enjoy when people post their Christmas Eve meal plans - sounds so festive!

Frynye · 05/11/2025 18:27

I always love the “I’m starving” threads. Normally cause Pil have served one slice of toast between 7 for breakfast and then nothing til 8pm. Always make me laugh

Move!

Booksandcheese · 05/11/2025 18:32

The competitive under eaters hosting adult children who complain they are being eaten out of house and home and can't understand why their darling children aren't happy with half a sandwich and a small glass of sherry. Gluttons the lot of them 😂

SliceofTosst · 05/11/2025 18:32

Lighthearted shit or weird presents. Not I didn't get what I want type moaning. I think I remember one mner got a periscope 😂

GreenSmithing · 05/11/2025 18:32

I think it's now moved from Twitter to Bluesky, but I do love Duvet know it's Christmas, where people post pictures of their Xmas sleeping arrangements in their unchanged childhood bedroom/under the ironing board in the utility room.

And on mumsnet I love threads about the weirdness of other people's houses and Xmas traditions. The in-laws have a clear door on the front on the loo! They've put me and my partner in the bunk beds, and the grandkids got the double bed! At midnight they put on yellow underwear and run with their suitcases around the block! That kind of thing.

Oh god yes 😂

Or MIL has served us one chicken breast and one new potato between six people, kids are crying with hunger!

Giddykiddy · 05/11/2025 18:36

I love the in laws who live an hour away wanting to stay for 5 nights threads ( me last year- i resolved it my having emergency surgery- still hosted but only for 3 nights and DH, DSis and DSIL did loads of the work

I love Duvet Know It’s Christmas threads too.
People tucked up underneath home office printers etc.

JipJup · 05/11/2025 18:39

Just looking forward to the fridge thread really and the ensuing arguments and finger wagging!

SomethingFun · 05/11/2025 18:40

Informing posters on their various threads that elf on the shelf, Xmas eve boxes and Love Actually are all absolute shite, and I’ve been right about that for the decade or so I’ve been saying that on here 😁

waitam · 05/11/2025 18:41

The drama threads
The family feuds threads
The turkey/food and how much everyone eats on the one plate threads
The MIL threads
The which house do I go to, or shall we just stay at home this year threads
The gift drama threads

And I'll be watching out for any I might have missed from other posts here!

I won't be here, I'll be away in sunny land as usual, so I'll smile a bit to myself about escaping all the shite. Sorry 😊

Billybagpuss · 05/11/2025 18:43

I love the drama threads where one person has sacrificed their life for Christmas but thanks to mn sees the light and all hell gets let loose.

I really don’t care that most of them are probably fiction.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 05/11/2025 18:44

Why hasn’t he proposed?
Was this enough food or are my guests greedy/rude?
or the opposite - are my hosts stingy or am I just greedy
