Middle class people and Labour/Lib Dem voters are particularly disapproving of flag flyers

Do you agree with this?

Class is a key distinction, with middle class people (those in the ABC1 social category) being more likely to disapprove of someone flying a flag than working class people (those in the C2DE category).

One third of middle class people (37%) disapprove of at least one of the flags listed being flown, compared to 23% of working class people.
The biggest difference comes over the English flag, which 30% of middle class people would judge someone negatively for flying compared to 16% of working class people.

Labour and Lib Dem voters are also much more likely to hold unfavourable views of those flying of England and UK flags than their Conservative counterparts.

Three in ten Labour voters (31%) and four in ten Lib Dem voters (42%) have an unfavourable view of someone flying the England flag. Among Conservative voters this figure is only 16%.
Likewise, 26% of Labour voters and 30% of Lib Dem voters have an unfavourable view of someone flying the Union Jack, compared to just 12% of Conservative voters.

@Barrenfieldoffucks neither are plenty of the people who go round with all the xenophobia stuff - lots have their own houses or bought council houses, are retired/semi retired/ in a job that is stable and not competing and benefits aren’t a competition and most immigrants are in work if you talking about legally approved ones- because their visas are often tied to work or an employer. I do get that services may be under pressure, probably more so in areas with a lot of immigration , blame that on the Tory’s inviting everyone and his mother in post Brexit when it was clear we were losing a lot of tax paying EU workers in certain sectors, plus of course Hong Kong and Ukraine which was kind of unavoidable- but as below where I mentioned my original home town, this town simply isn’t full of new immigrants - it’s always had a certain modest level because of the pits. What it does have a lot of is home owning middle aged and just beyond middle age unemployed and underemployed and often undereducated and take the piss out of anyone who is educated and with a good job , white British born males and women with low aspirations and expectations , probably due to the quality of most of the men available . I feel sorry for a lot of the women in these areas , ‘many ‘ of whom genuinely are really nice good natured family women doing their best and often supporting complete wazzocks financially too as well as they can

What makes me laugh is the number of middle class teachers and their teenage kids who call themselves middle class and ‘very liberal’ and anti Thatcher - also staunchly ‘Remain’ but when it comes to them / their kids actually mixing with - God Forbid - working class people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - as genuine equals no less !!!!!!!!! - they clutch their pearls and be like

My middle class dd had plenty of working class friends at school, frequently went to their houses etc. It wasn't a big deal - I grew up with plenty of working class friends too. It's pretty normal if you attend a state comprehensive school.

My dd is now surrounded by mostly middle class kids at university, but she keeps in touch with most of her home friends. And as an adult, I have friends from across the socio-economic spectrum. Neither of us are friends with racists though.

My DD is working class, has quite a middle class mate who stayed with us for a few days, very recently. I’m sure they would say the same.

Then DD was on the phone to her, and heard her mum discussed her private tutoring, and she was getting a few things wrong, and said something like ‘this is what happens when you hang around with fucking chavs’ then the phone was muted.

DD was so upset, and I’m very pissed off. This is in the last few days so it’s quite raw for me actually.

It’s deffo a ‘thing’

Edit to add: Don’t think DD has spoken to her since, she feels so awkward

Well, obviously that's disgusting if that's what was actually said, but it certainly isn't representative of the views of all middle class people.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 05/11/2025 14:25

I would add, I really hate the term "chav" and wish that we could erase its use completely. It is both idiotic and offensive.

I mean, name me one thing which is representative of all middle class people?

I don’t mean everyone thinks like this, but it’s naive to think it’s not a ‘thing’

Like I said, it literally happened in the last couple of days, so appreciate I may be feeling particularly raw about it

Edit: To be fair, my comment was more in response to the poster you responded to, along the same theme, not so much a direct reply to you.

Oh look another middle class bashing thread. It’s not the middle class burning down hotels, racially abusing everybody who doesn’t look like them and starting fights with each other over a bag full of wind every Saturday afternoon.

Sort your own house before you come after people who actually have aspirations in life.

It is undoubtedly a thing for some people, I am not trying to deny that. But for a lot of middle class people, the kind of comment you describe would, in itself, be considered to be incredibly crass and lacking in "class".

Yeah, I think most people would see comments like this as low class.

But hey, we move ☺️

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/11/2025 14:38

What a load of crap. I was a teacher, my dd went to a very good secondary. Catchment from all over a naice area but a third from inner city.

Dd now 19 still hangs out with her friend from inner city area.

An Englishman is someone who drives his German car to an Irish pub to drink Spanish lager, then stops on the way home for an Indian take away meal, which he eats sitting on a sofa from Sweden whilst watching American shows on his Japanese TV.
On Saturdays he watches a football team made up of people from all over the world that is owned by an American, a Russian, a European, and Arab or someone from the Far East...

Whilst I totally get you and feel the same - it’s definitely ‘some’ middle class complete self interested opportunists agitating ‘mainly’ the working classes to behave this way and yet these people don’t see it - I used to think a lot of working class people might not have much, but were sharp and saw a snake oil salesman a mile off- these days not so much - although the Scottish people and scousers seem to have retained this aspect more!!

Exactly. English people have no culture to even preserve in the first place, so I don’t even know what they are complaining about!

And also, fun fact: Football was invented by China. They stole that too!

Of course I would never have a bad word to say about the Scottish, Welsh or Irish working class. I hope nobody got offended, you’re all fantastic people every one of you. It’s just the English. As with everything rotten with the world, it all comes down to England somewhere!

I’ll be very much enjoying English tradition tonight, watching the local fireworks and bonfire 🔥 ☺️

MsWilmottsGhost · 05/11/2025 14:54

3 pages in and still no link to your stats @EddyF ?

Did you pluck them out your arse?

Everyone I know disapproves of the flag shaggers, and especially see the painting flags on things as vandalism - 100%, young and old, male and female, WC and MC - I've not heard the slightest bit of support for them.

I guess I must be in a really fucking massive bubble 🙄

Well fireworks were invented by the Chinese and bonfires were invented by Neolithic humans, so you are actually engaging in foreign culture. Hope you have a nice time anyhow!

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2025 15:06

Yes and it also pisses me off too because there's been an inability to determine between flag use that predates flagshagging and actual flagshagging.

To the point that you get stroppy locals trying to shame people for using the flag for something that has been done for years without complete because of their own tone deaf self righteousness.

I have no time for flagshaggers or the virilant anti-flagshaggers. Both as bad as each other in their own way. Both have their own prejudices and ignorance.

You’ve never heard the story of guy fawkes? You could probably pick holes in the customs and traditions of many nations. But to you only the English are fair game? Not to mention your comment up thread that would be deleted for being snobby in any other circumstance

... And it's unsurprising that the middle classes are less likely to jump on bandwagons led by the likes of Tommy Robinson. In general, they're likely to be more educated and not see things in the same simplistic way.

Just plebs aren't they? You might as well just say it.

You are part of the problem.

I know you’re unhappy here and someone suggested taking up a visa to which you responded positively. Would you do it? You could be happier!

You would hate to be a guest around the dinner circuit with my middle class contemporaries. They have far more scathing ways of describing the working class than what you saw right there.

Yes thank you I most certainly have. I have already taken to referring to myself as Irish and I am currently in the process of looking for a lovely celtic name to replace the one I’ve been living with for all my life. It’s certainly made me a happier person inside.
