To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

I wonder how many have been killed by humans… 😔

How very stupid.

PutAPinInIt · 03/11/2025 12:11

some dogs don’t react to the de sensitising YouTube videos and do react to actual fireworks

What a fatuous comment. One could wonder how much wildlife has been killed by pets…

I keep reading that and really don't understand. I had my first dog in 1999 and have always been to dog-friendly places. Pubs, restaurants, cafés, so really I don't get why it seems to be a new thing.

I think its the large number of dogs in many more places than they ever used to be. There's always been some places dogs could go, now there are so many places. Shops for example, walking around items or hanging clothes people might buy. Up on seats in pubs, cafes etc on the next table, yuck.

On what planet can children 'easily' be kept away from dogs?

Yeah…not easy at all.

My former colleagues toddler liked dogs but sadly for him he had to keep away from them due to severe allergic reaction. Him and his dad walking through the park and a dog bounds over and licks my friends 2 year old with the dopey owner watching.

The kid was actually really calm about it since he quite likes dogs, but my colleague said she was furious when her partner came back and her son’s wee face was bright red and starting to form welts. This was pre-2020. The skin calmed down and he was fine but you never know what can happen with an allergic reaction. Plus allergies aside that incident could’ve just terrified or just disgusted some kids. I’d have been grossed out by that as a kid.

She had a go at her husband out of
frustration, but he basically just said it’s not his fault if off-leash dog come running at their child. I mean I guess he could’ve lifted the kid up but you shouldn’t have to he on high alert like that plus the dog might’ve thought it was a game and jumped up to get the kid.

I can imagine it’s much worse now post pandemic with the surge in dog ownership and poorly trained dogs . I just avoid parks altogether most of the time but I still see off leash dogs around occasionally. Including one that jumped up on me in my apartment building.

Thing is back to dogs.

Well bred dogs often don’t have such issues because good breeders don’t breed from dogs that have say epilepsy known in the line, they don’t breed from anxiety ridden dogs or from snappy dogs. Yes some will always sneak though the cracks but not to todays epidemic of dogs.

So less attacks on people and each other and they were not petrified of even their own farts or being home alone.

Now everyone has some kind of Poo or tea cup something or other. Importing street dogs with no history and we have a society of dogs that cannot be dogs. They became people’s baby replacements and again now don’t know how to dog. Massive XL types because people dumb idiots are breeding for the wrong reasons yet again.

and yes back in the olden days lots of dogs were mongrels but again down a single street you might of had one dog it didn’t have anxiety or anything like that. Presumably again because you didn’t have people deliberately breeding them for maximum money over nice dog. They were genuinely accidental litters and people paid £50 at the pub for it and mum would be spayed after.

I don’t think fireworks should be banned, I think some could do with not being as loud as they are. But I also see it’s just a few weeks out of an entire year. If we ban everything that is an inconvenience to some people for a mere couple of weeks you want to bet cats, dogs and all sorts of other things should be included in that banned list as well.

I think that’s exactly right. Until relatively recently - maybe the last 10/15 years - the accepted situation was that if you lived in an urban area and/or were at work all day it wasn’t fair on a dog to have one as a pet. The welfare of the animal was paramount.

At some point an individuals ‘right’ to have a dog became more important that the welfare of animals, and large numbers of pets were introduced into unsuitable environments.

Having done so, the perpetrators then expected everyone already in that environment to modify their behaviour and accept dogs. I’ll accept that there are some responsible dog owners, but they are the minority. There’s no need for a dog to be traipsing round John Lewis or Marks and Spencer in a retail park - it’s just cruel and unnecessary. It’s a bit like moving next door to a church and then complaining constantly about the bells ;)

I was thinking of going to this all you can eat cake cafe in Battersea. Decided to double check as I know that area is full of “doggos” and so I had a look at its instagram.

So glad I did because not only are they dog friendly, they actually do an afternoon tea for dogs and had a photo of dogs on the seats eating food at the tables?! . I wonder if it’s the same cups and plates they are using for human customers? I know they get washed of course, but even then I decided to give the place a swerve.

It’s lovely for those who want that for their dog of course but not for me 🤢

Yeah I was so grossed out and disappointed because I love cake, but not that much to eat somewhere where they allow that.

It’s called Jack&Beyond, for those who want to go/avoid. 😂

I don’t suppose many people are as concerned about wildlife as they are about children though.

And I can guarantee that more wildlife is killed by humans too. Pesticide anyone?

ACynicalDad · 03/11/2025 13:48

I can't be the only person whose dog will happily go for a walk with fireworks all around us, I discovered this coming out of the pub with him at 6 months old and has stuck.

Ours used to when we had dogs. Mums would bark to go out in the garden to sit and watch them. Our house cats sit in the windows and watch them or take themselves out into the catio and watch them outside.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 03/11/2025 13:50

Yes the obvious solution to this would be to ban private sales of fireworks and it would not be before time.

PastaAllaNorma · 03/11/2025 13:53

Many councils have stopped having organised firework displays because of a lack of money. This naturally means a rise in private fireworks, even if only one in 20 houses that would have gone to the communal one does something at home.

That also means they are more likely to be spread out over the weekends either side of the 5th, as suits individuals schedules.

Austerity made this a much worse problem on recent years.

Although I'll be honest, that frisson of danger at the community event put on by the slightly scatty Scouts each year was part of its charm. Would one hit the church tower again this year? What about the Scout Hut roof?

We used to take bets.

If you are happy to downplay the deaths of children from dog attacks by comparing them to the impacts of pesticide on insects then I think you have somewhat lost a sense of perspective! The trend of dog attacks is up, but pesticide usage down, for what it’s worth…

Mademetoxic · 03/11/2025 14:07

Humans are selfish twats. I way prefer animals. Any animals other than humans. All humans think about is themselves.

MarvellousMonsters · 03/11/2025 14:07

TempestTost · 02/11/2025 21:45

I do think it's interesting that 40 years ago no one complained about their pets and fireworks, whereas now it is a common complaint.

I can't imagine animals'opinions on it have really changed. It's people that are different. It's now a "thing" to complain about.

40 years ago fireworks that the public could buy were a few sparkly rockets that banged quieter than a car back-firing, a Catherine wheel, a Roman candle and some sparklers. They weren’t ear splitting mortar bombs that reverberated in your diaphragm.

Even 10/20 years ago though the public could and did buy huge fireworks from actual pryo stores and wholesalers hyperarma / jtf / Costco type places.

I remember a family member when I was maybe 10/11 buying ones you are meant to be setting off in the middle of a field.

I think though what someone else said has hit the nail. Less and less council displays so more people are buying their own so it’s now going on for longer

Onefortheroad25 · 03/11/2025 14:17

There was definitely less fireworks this year where I live in Ireland. Thank god as my dog is a nervous wreck from mid September on when it starts up. I think he’s just starting to unwind now. I’m not on FB so wouldn’t know who was giving out about what. I don’t know how you could prepare your pets for it tbh.

DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix · 02/11/2025 20:45

It's interesting that the replies saying you're BU are generally not focusing on the point you actually made, ie about notice.

There are decent arguments in favour of limiting fireworks. But they're seldom made by people who think their decision to get pets, in a society they knew full well had a tradition of fireworks, imposes an obligation on other people who didn't get any choice in the matter.

And pray tell how that helps the wildlife who aren’t anyone’s pets? Typical selfish response and one day the government will be forced to ban them from general sale. What on earth will you do then?

That is not an obvious solution, because it would be unworkable.

No political party is going to seriously propose it because it's one of those things that would really piss a lot of people off. They don't like opening cans of worms when they don't have to. Can you imagine the headlines? There are also people who might like a ban in theory but who understand it would then open the door to restrictions on things they value.

And after all that, fireworks would be illegally imported.
