To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

Totally not the same thing unless someone is turning up on your doorstep multiple nights a year with a few dogs to terrify her directly.

You are right ,it's not the same. A child being scared of dogs is much more important than a dog being scared of fireworks. Fireworks are a few nights a year. Dogs are everywhere, all year round.

I get to walk in dog poop 365 days a year ecause selfish owners won't pick it up. They can put up with some fireworks a few days a year.

Really? 365 days a year?

Well I pick up after my dog who is terrified of fireworks, but hey, if it suits your selfish narrative.

MummytoE · 03/11/2025 09:52

Some people are so entitled. No we should not ban fireworks just cause your dog gets a bit scared. Train them better.

We went to a brilliant event called Illuminara (I think!) in Pitlochry recently. Absolutely spectacular light display but no noise. Lasers, I think? Definitely the way forward. Far, far better than any fireworks we’ve ever seen.

These were actual fireworks we saw. It was stunning. The finale was set to Hallelujah- it was so beautiful, I cried a bit!!

Except you can much more easily keep your child away from dogs than the rest if us can avoid the stupid fireworks.

On what planet can children 'easily' be kept away from dogs?

Earmuffs are a thing

TesChique · 03/11/2025 10:15

Well I'm sick of people believing their children's desires come above everything and everyone else in society.

So looks like we're even.

Fireworks are ridiculous, anti social, damaging to wildlife and downright cruel.

But yeah sure your kids are happy so fuck everyone else

ldnmusic87 · 03/11/2025 10:15

No, I hate fireworks. Weeks of horrible bangs and noise at all hours

I love fireworks. When we have our Diwali celebrations we always follow the law and end at the legal time.

I live in an urban area so no wildlife to worry about. Some pets might get scared but so be it. If humans were getting heart attacks I'd worry.

The ecological impact of fireworks is negligible.

Exactly even get shitty owners taking them into children’s play areas that have signs saying no dogs.

Looks like we are even, yes. Both the fireworks and the pet ownership will continue, as the status quo. Each will damage wildlife, and anyone who's only willing to acknowledge that when it comes to the thing they don't like will continue to be slagged off for hypocrisy. Job's a good un!

Palladin · 02/11/2025 20:40

Wildlife and lifestock also get distressed by fireworks. But great that your kids loved it.

Agree. I live rurally and hate loud fireworks. During one v loud session of fireworks I saw birds careering into tree trunks, terrified. Horses and cattle can bolt and get injured or killed. When I was little fireworks were far less noisy than now, there is no need to have all the incredibly loud rockets at all.

user5972308467 · 03/11/2025 10:28

It’s wildlife I feel sorry for - it must be absolutely terrifying for birds, hedgehogs, foxes etc. probably causes lots of deaths. There is plenty of wildlife even in urban areas.
Why must they be so loud, I'm sure they were never this bad when i was a kid. Surely if they're your fireworks your there watching the sodding things, why do they have to be heard 10 streets away.

Indeed, I don't know what some of these posters are on. Dogs are constantly in public spaces, all year round. That's just plain fact. Parks, buses, beaches, trains, cafes, shops, trams, town squares. Anywhere people walk. They are not avoidable.

People are obviously allowed to decide that their selfish enjoyment of their pet is more important than the negative externalities, as with fireworks, but denying the bleeding obvious isn't going to get them anywhere. Just own it.

ClockworkGiraffe · 03/11/2025 10:33

How exactly do you prepare for it? I must sit my dog down and have a woman to woman chat about this silliness of having seizures every firework season. Maybe she just needs to dog-up and deal with it.

Much like people who believe the animals they choose to keep in their house are the be all and end all. From people on This Morning debating whether it should be the law for companies to give time off when a pet dies, to people with dogs in those stupid wee buggies taking up space in the bus , to " mum of 3 , 2 girls and a fur baby..." There was even a thread on here once trying to get people to agree to a NHS equivalent for pets!! It's ridiculous.

What does it harm you if people class their pet as child for "mum of" purposes?

Also the death of a pet is devastating, I can see why we would have a need for a work leave solution going forward as people prioritise animal care over having kids.

this really made me laugh hahahaha

My friend has to start his dog on tranqs four weeks before the event othewise the vet has said he is quite literally at risk of a heart attack such is his fear.

Its not animal owners being fussy, its fucking cruel.

Yes but when does it end. Should I get two weeks off cause my goldfish died? Or time in lieu cause my hamster has a headache? It's absurd.

CandiedPrincess · 03/11/2025 10:41

We have a dog, she's an unbothered queen when it comes to fireworks. Loads doing off on Saturday night and she didn't even look up. Mind, we have a busy hectic house so she's used to all sorts of noise.

Ok well dramatics aside, I think bereavement leave should be for the death of a person only. If people choose to use holidays or unpaid leave for the death of a pet that is their choice

MissAmbrosia · 03/11/2025 10:45

In Belgium private displays are banned. It's not possible to buy fireworks as a normal consumer. We don't have Guys Fawkes here of course....NY and National Day are the big firework dates and they are 6 months apart.
