To be sick of people moaning about their pets and fireworks?

There's currently a debate on my local Facebook page as the people in the street behind me let off a long, spectacular firework display in their back garden which was very loud.
It was absolutely brilliant and my kids loved it.

Someone has moaned that her four cats are terrified and others are joining in and saying their cats/dogs are also distressed.

They are all saying they should have had a warning?? Even though it's the weekend before bonfire night??

But what really annoys me is that if you click on this woman's name and see all her past posts, she's moaned about the same bloody thing at the same time of year for the past SIX years!!!

Why has she done nothing to prepare for this even though she knows full well it happens around the same time??!!!

I entirely agree with you: fireworks are a magic and completely altruistic thing that people have enjoyed for millennia. People have also had pets for millennia and the two have managed to coexist so I’m not sure why now some people’s nervous dogs are thought to be more important than the millions of people who love fireworks.

I don’t think you understand the definition of altruistic! Fireworks are the exact opposite.

In what other circumstances do we allow the completely free sale of explosives to the general public? It’s fucking bananas. And for what purpose? The backyard ones are utterly shite anyway. The literal definition of a damp squib.

That was their charm in the 70s. We’d cheer if one actually worked 😂.

Fireworks aren't magic or altruistic.

I’m so glad you and your selfish family enjoyed your fireworks.

But there are lots of other living beings who get extremely distressed by fireworks. And yes, animals die every single year due to fireworks.

But you carry on burning your money in the sky and oohing and ahhing at the pretty colours.

did you even read the OP? they weren't her fireworks, they were her neighbour's fireworks, and she didn't spend a penny!

you already look like a twat by just throwing out childish insults rather than actually engaging in the debate, but it's even more embarrassing to base your riposte on something that never actually happened.

Happyjoe · 03/11/2025 00:04

One night a year, great, am all for it. Big display, lots of people going having fun, all on the 5th.
But... goes on for about a month now. Random times, random gardens and parks, kids letting them off 'for a larf', no warning to get animals inside/relaxed, impossible to allow for it.

It's not just pets, it's wildlife that suffer. Yet again people think that humans are the only important thing in the world and their precious children having fun. Piss right off with that attitude quite frankly.

PeloMom · 03/11/2025 00:05

I have no pets and can’t stand home fireworks. A scheduled organized at a specific public place (as far away as possible from my home)- fine. But someone doing a display in practically my back/ front yard- no thanks!

Ablondiebutagoody · 03/11/2025 00:06

I love them and the louder the better. We'll let them off in the garden on 5th Nov so don't feel the need to warn anybody.

If pets either side of you, still decent to give them the heads up as to when. But thanks for being someone who actually does the fireworks on the right night!

jezlifecoach · 03/11/2025 00:11

Couldn’t give a toss if dogs hate them - I don’t like dogs and many others don’t but have to put up with them in every cafe now even thought I’m the one with the money not the dog.

stick classic fm on if it bothers them that much

chattyness · 03/11/2025 00:11

They should be organised displays on the 5th only it's not a jolly public holiday. It's become ridiculous the way it's dragged out before and after the actual date and on new year as well . People have to drug their pets and it's very costly. But wildlife don't even have that option. It's bloody selfish. When you know that your good time makes so many others miserable and you think they shouldn't complain about it then you're an arsehole.

freakingscared · 03/11/2025 00:11

My pets are actually ok with it . But I live surrounded by farm animals and omg they get stressed the sheep the cows the horses even the howls and fox get altered , we saw a bunch of red deer running up our drive last year too , never seen it before . Honestly they should only allow the refused noise ones or none

Kelani · 03/11/2025 00:18

That’s ridiculous! What about other noises like thunder - there’s no warning about that.
I have a neighbour doing renovations - they start at 7am very loudly - my chihuahua is hiding under my blanket next to me.
She needs to accept it and protect her animals,

harveythehorse · 03/11/2025 00:28

So many people focusing on dogs - what about the horses who find fireworks so deeply stressful? I've known horses try to jump out of their stables to escape the noise and one who was so terrified he suffered a fatal field accident. If the owners had been given notice of these private firework displays they could have arranged for their beloved animals to be managed differently but nobody bothered to tell them.

Yes fireworks are pretty, but they're also dangerous and the amount of people setting them off without warning neighbours and without paying due care and attention is a huge concern.

Reallywhatonearth · 03/11/2025 00:28

Honestly fireworks night is not a surprise. Neither is Diwali. Neither is New Year.

Far too many killjoys wanting restrictions on everything but then they don’t want restrictions placed upon where they can take their ‘fur babies’ or on how they are treated.

Seriously? You think that fireworks and thunder are the same?

Or people who think their dogs have more rights than humans

LoveBluey · 02/11/2025 22:14

I’m very sympathetic to people who don’t like fireworks for whatever reason and would support a ban on selling them - however I just find it so baffling that people on social media complain specifically that they weren’t warned there would be fireworks and if they had but known they could have prepared.
Clearly they have some thoughts of how they could have prepared and while fireworks are readily available and it’s the weekend before bonfire night I can’t understand why they wouldn’t just take those preparations anyway.

Yes I see your point but to give you another angle. If I knew there were going to be fireworks on Saturday I would prepare for it by moving my sheep into the barn to keep them safe. I cant move them in every night for two weeks just incase because it’s a major job and stressful for the sheep. If I know what day and time I can pre arrange for a friend to look after the dog until the fireworks have finished. Some preparations need some planning so a bit of notice is very helpful. I don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun but equally I don’t appreciate having to leap out of bed and run out to find a sheep with a badly torn leg simply because someone couldn’t pop a note through the door and give me a chance to prepare. I’m out to dinner in the summer and receive a call to say come home quick fireworks! How can I prepare for that and what about my enjoyment. It’s a two way street

NormasArse · 02/11/2025 23:43

Or silent fireworks… oh, wait!

We went to a brilliant event called Illuminara (I think!) in Pitlochry recently. Absolutely spectacular light display but no noise. Lasers, I think? Definitely the way forward. Far, far better than any fireworks we’ve ever seen.

To be fair, some dogs do deserve more rights than some humans. This week's news has reminded me of that loudly and clearly!

unluckystar · 03/11/2025 00:50

I would usually have agreed with you . However after a local display last night my cat had been rushed to the emergency vets today in extreme shock and it has cost me £540 so far . He is absolutely petrified, can’t eat, pooping , just staring into space, not reacting to us in the slightest 😢 hopefully he will improve in the next couple of days. It was touch and go this morning

A lot of miserable people on this thread - where do you live that fireworks are so unbearably loud INSIDE your home?

FWIW I do think we should go to public displays only for safety reasons - new build estates with all their gardens packed in back to back together are not the place to be setting off explosives but I could not give one iota of a shit if your dog is upset. People’s enjoyment ahead of pets. Always.

Fair enough but I hazard a guess more people get enjoyment from their pets than they do fireworks.

ClairDeLaLune · 03/11/2025 00:58

Why do they have to be loud? Quiet fireworks exist, why can’t they be the only ones allowed? I love the spectacle of watching fireworks but have SPD and hate the noise. To me it’s all about what they look like, nobody really enjoys the big bangs surely? Ban the noise but not the sight, say I!

How about veterans with PTSD?

My DS is terrified of dogs. Can they be banned please? They are year around too, not just a certain time of year.

Or do we all have to accept that some things might scare our children/pets but it doesn't mean they should be banned?

I’m scared of dogs too. I actually hate them. I’d be quite happy if they were banned!
