Stolen/lost Apple Watch not being returned

My daughter’s Apple Watch was lost/stolen on a night out. She put it into lost mode and tracked its movements. She got an address at which it stopped at. She contacted the police who couldn’t do much as ‘Apple tracking is not that accurate’. They just checked the address. We looked up the address on the internet and found a name connected to it. Checked on social media but found a few people with the same name. Messaged one that matched but they said it wasn’t them (turned out to be true).
I wrote a letter explaining the situation and a lady called me the next day saying her sons had found it on a night out and that it was safe and they could send it to us tracked next day. Gave my daughters address but then heard nothing. I messaged 3 days later and no reply. Found the lady on Instagram and again no reply. What do you think I should do? When they first looked at the watch my daughters number would’ve come up but they didn’t ring so maybe wanted to keep it from the start?

Contact the police again and send them the messages. If they have kept it following finding it, it is still theft.

Yes maybe you’re right. I was just really hopeful when the mum rang but obviously her son has different ideas.

Contact the police, give the name and address but don't mention the watch. Tell the police they have been sending offensive tweets. They'll be over there like a shot.

Gooniesneversaydie85 · 02/11/2025 07:55

Yes this is true. It’s a shame that tweeting is more criminal than theft.

I bet the son has sold it or given it to someone in the meantime!

Gooniesneversaydie85 · 02/11/2025 09:20

Yes maybe. The only thing is when an Apple Watch is on lost mode no one else is able to unlock/ use it.

Unfortunately it's a sign of the times where theft of personal belongings is no longer seen as a crime.

I wouldn’t expect to get it back in today’s world, but even so I messaged DS’s stolen phone with my details to return it this year but nothing happened. I wouldn’t think of involving police. reminds me of the bonkers thread about taking a stolen bike back from the rider it’s gone. someone can unlock it and sell it. I got the phone replaced with our bank account phone insurance. I also never take my Apple Watch off on a night out

It’s a shame because all the detective work has been done for them 🤷‍♀️

Just curious as to why people think I’m being unreasonable

It’s a just a shame that you can’t wear items out. I just think it’s strange that they contacted me to ask if I wanted it sent and then nothing. That’s the part that’s confusing.

I'd go back to the police with the messages, you now have actual evidence of who has it rather than relying on the tracking. I don't know what they'll do if anything but it's worth a try.

I'd wager the stupid boy has probably already sold it to some poor sod on Facebook marketplace or something. If the police do nothing I'd be tempted to take matters into my own hands and publicly shame the mother online, but that's just me being a petty bitch (and you'd probably end up in more trouble than the nasty little thieves anyway!)

CosySeason · 02/11/2025 10:53

While it’s very important to you it’s not to them. They may have too much going on to go and post it.

I know that and I’m not against peoples opinions but just wish you could see maybe why because that would help me to decide what to do.

I did think this but can’t understand why they wouldn’t just reply if it wasn’t dodgy?

I think it’s gone now but just frustrating when you know who it is but can’t do anything. If it’s sold I don’t think they can do much with it and it’s on lost mode.
