Some people on AIBU (and in real life, too!) seem to get in a huff when they're asked for advice and then the asker chooses not to take it. Isn't advice best when it's offered as a free gift? I'd have thought the whole point of AIBU is to get a range of opinions to help you broaden your outlook, and then you can decide what to do with it?

I have to admit there was a funny incident this week with a poster called Goober, who thought her neighbour was doing a Single White Female on her. But the poor love ended up flouncing off when MNers descended on her like a pack of wolves!

i think AIBU is a bit of a red herring

IME, the OP often wants everyone to agree with them!

You may be right, ruby (fab name...I once owned a pair of glittery ruby slippers...I loved them to death!)...though not everyone is as vain as that. I did start a thread a few days ago where I genuinely wanted to know what other people thought without asking friends as they'd know who I was talking about. I prob didn't explain the whole situ clearly in my OP so I had to add further info later on as people were making wrong assumptions about what was behind my opinion. Since all their advice was based on a false assumption, and therefore couldn't possibly be right for my situation.

By the time I'd clarified my statement, they'd already made up their minds and weren't going to change them...funnily enough that's the exact same thing they said I was doing!

Advice - what you ask for when you know the answer but wish you didn't!!
