Y1 Half term homework

How much do your kids in Y1 get? AIBU to think they shouldn’t be getting pages and pages over half term? There’s about 16 pages ranging from writing about what you did over half term to maths sheets, plus reading, comprehension etc.

That’s more than my Y6 has. Are you sure it’s all meant to be completed?

Imanautumn · 01/11/2025 18:15

Bin it that’s ridiculous.

I hated holiday homework.

Cast a cloud over both child and adult.

Agree. I'm fine with homework, I think it has its benefits, but never over holidays - holidays are supposed to be exactly that, a holiday from their work. Thankfully my DS's teacher (and my DD's teachers in primary school) has the policy of no homework over weekends or holidays.

My year 1 has to write 10 sentences and do some maths. It was torturous and took the entire holiday of me asking them to sit down rather than play.

That’s more than my son had and he is in year 11!

We were happy to do spellings/times table in term time as homework and we always had a chapter book on the go but we never ever did holiday homework. They would go back to school with it undone.

GarlicBreadStan · 01/11/2025 18:44

I'd bin it

mammabing · 01/11/2025 18:55

I gave my year 1s a copy of the spellings we’d been covering over half term. That’s it.

notanothernamechangemother · 01/11/2025 19:07

I'd not do it. I don't always get my daughter to complete all her homework for year 2. She is still keeping up and the teacher never mentioned it at parents evening. I'm not a massive fan of homework and especially over the holidays. They need to rest and enjoy their childhoods!

Just to read once a day for 5 mins in KS1.

In KS2 they get weekly homework tasks set every Friday, but homework is never set on the Fridays before the holidays/half term break
