To ask my boring London transport query about being charged on my cards twice?

AIBU to ask my (boring) query about contactless cards on London public transport?

I’ve contacted TFL about this, but thought I’d also post here in case anyone else has had a similar experience and can help.

I was getting on the tube yesterday, and got the beep and green light when I put my card on the reader at the gate, so my touch-in had been accepted.

However, the gate didn’t open, so I used a different card to complete the journey (touching in and out).

The card I initially used registered a touch-in without a touch-out, so I was still charged on it (£10.40!) I suppose because they thought I’d touched in and caught the tube, but didn’t know where I’d touched out.

I was also charged on the card I used to complete the journey, so I’ve been charged twice.

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? I’m wondering how likely it is that I’ll get a refund (I hope I do). Thanks.

I suppose the system isn’t to know that you did get through the gate. It thinks you got on the tube, didn’t touch off so has charged you the maximum. Then the other card has been charged in the ordinary way.

You can dispute a charge in your TfL account - it’s called card clash off the top of my head. Each of your cards/contactless is listed separately so I’d select the one where you tapped out only and claim this one back. I had this but was in the time TfL had the hacking problems so the system was a little different. If you do get through on the phone they are good, your first charge will probably be adjusted down too.

Sounds like a technical blip.
Annoying but hopefully you can get it refunded.
Unfortunately the first card knows you went in (even though the gate didn't open)- but doesn't know where you went out so it's automatically charged you the price cap.
Fingers crossed for you.

For contactless tapping in and out to work on TfL, you need to use exactly the same card or device to pay at each end. Otherwise as you’ve found it registers it as two different journeys with two payments. Eg if you tap in with Apple Pay but tap out with a card, the TfL systems see this as two separate journeys even if both are for the same account. But anyway, give TfL a call, I find them very helpful with issues like this.

Thanks all! I’ve contacted TFL about it and they’re looking into it.
