To think there’s something wrong with dressing all in black???

The other day, I was on a day off. I was wearing a black jumper dress, with a little bit of cream stitching, black tights, black boots and a black and white bag.

Although I was off work, I had to pop into the office to collect something. My colleague asked “where are you off to?” whilst looking at my outfit. I thought I was reading too much into this, so just answered with my plans for the day… shopping etc. But I did definitely notice the glances up and down at my outfit.

Later that same day, I had to drop my son off for a Halloween party, and a friend said “love that you’re dressed for Halloween”. I said that it wasn’t planned, and laughed it off.

It’s left me feeling a bit self conscious. Is wearing black head to toe a no-no?? I probably don’t do it often, but I really like that jumper dress and feel like I wouldn’t know how to wear it otherwise. I could keep it just for work, but I do want to be able to wear it at weekends and on days off. Is there some fashion rule that I’m completely unaware of? Is it because black is for funerals?

help!

Another one who wears all black a lot. I’ve been told I suit it, but I’d be wearing it anyway! I do wear coloured cardigans because I crochet them myself and hate working with black yarn. I have a couple of shop bought black cardigans too though. I have never understood why people feel the need to comment negatively on other people’s appearance.

LaserPumpkin · 30/10/2025 22:50

I don’t wear black unless I have to as it doesn’t suit me, but wouldn’t notice an all-black outfit on someone else unless it was in a style that stood out separately to the colour.

Edited

All black does not really stand out
Someone in all red will though. Or yellow

Head to toe black doesn’t look good on me, it ages me. But Iwill happily wear black with a splash of another colour.

Yes, some people can't wear it and others look better in it than anything else.

I have seen a few people get their colours done or go to stylists etc and come out in all sorts of bold colours that are supposed to be doing them favours and i generally just think "go back to your black." It can look elegant, stylish, chic, edgy depending on how you style it. Love it.

So bloody rude! I often wear all black, nothing wrong with it.

It's drab, is depressing for other people to have to look at Imagine if everyone wore black? It would be like the whole world in mourning.😫

Mistyglade · 31/10/2025 01:00

No. Your colleague and friend’s comments are what’s wrong. Wear what the hell you like.

CallMeFlo · 31/10/2025 01:08

I unwiingly scared a little girl at our local garden centre. Admittedly I hadnt straightened my hair and was wearing a long blac skirt and black top but I think I saw her mum just tip right over the edge as she shouted 'I dont like witches'

Unfortunately mum dragged her out too fast to reassure her I wasn't offended and saw where she was coming from 😂

Why wouldn't you like colour?
To dress in all black is mórbid and depressing, associate with death.

Bóllócks

I am comfortable in black. You not liking looking at me is a you problem. Get a grip.

BauhausOfEliott · 31/10/2025 01:18

I wear all black almost every day - and have done for years. Nobody’s ever said anything about it.

I fucking LOVE black. I don’t find it depressing and if you do, that isn’t my problem.

WhichTeam · 31/10/2025 01:35

Nothing wrong with black. I find it to be a comfort colour. In fact, I opened your thread while wearing a billowy black dress with black cardigan. Which I wear with black shoes.

Zooeyzebra · 31/10/2025 01:47

It’s normal isn’t it? I often wear all black. Even in summer. I have loads of black summer dresses. I’m wearing a black dress right now. I’m not particularly witchy, but would love to be mistaken for one

PreciousTatas · 31/10/2025 05:09

After a quick tally, around 87% of my wardrobe is black.

It just feels right.

And I'm reading this in black pj's.

I wear head to toe black all the time without feeling at all self-conscious.

Me too. Dd refers to me as I’m dressed for a funeral 😂

TheNestedIf · 31/10/2025 05:40

I usually dress in black. It goes well with other colours, especially black. Colours make me look washed out, whereas if I'm wearing black I still look washed out but at least people think it's just because I'm wearing black. And it doesn't show the blood stains. Bwah ha ha...

TorroFerney · 31/10/2025 05:59

Netcurtainnelly · 30/10/2025 22:12

Yes, it looks mórbid. Colour is better.

For whom? Better for what?

Ivy888 · 31/10/2025 06:06

It sounds like a very smart outfit, and I think they meant “are you off to something fancy”. It had nothing to do either with the colour.

PollyBell · 31/10/2025 06:25

I wear all black to works sometimes haven't had any comments but if i do I would still where it

Luckily most people dress to please themselves and not random strangers.

NarnianQueen · 31/10/2025 08:00

It just sounds like they’re not used to seeing YOU in all black?
Or the colleague thought you looked extra smart and we’re going somewhere fancy after work/ to a secret job interview?!

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 31/10/2025 08:06

I’m sure you looked fabulous but if I dress all in black I feel like a cat burglar 😂.

randomchap · 31/10/2025 08:13

I'd wear more black if I didn't have a white cat. The hair really stands out on me

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 31/10/2025 08:18

The13thFairy · 30/10/2025 15:53

A psychiatrist will pathologise you wearing black. Please don't do it.

Huh?

loads of people wear black all the time.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 31/10/2025 08:21

The13thFairy · 30/10/2025 19:44

I recently read a psychiatrist's letter to my GP, sent after a consultation with me, who saw fit to mention that I was dressed completely in black.

Must have been jealous. I think all black can look very classy/smart.
