I have had knee pain for four months now, following completing a 5k run. I heard a ‘pop’ as I was running and it’s been sore ever since. I stopped running and exercising for two months, beyond walking and upper body exercises. That did nothing, so I’ve slowly incorporated some lower leg exercises back into my routine.

A week ago, I took a tumble and since then the pain has been nearly unbearable. I’ve got pain at the bottom of my kneecap, it is worse when walking or after a long period of time sitting down. It’s sore in the morning, and gets worse after any exercise.

I’ve put in a form at my GP, but my partner is horrified and thinks that I should just suck it up, or if it’s really bad pay for private physio as he thinks I’m wasting the GP’s time and it’s not bad enough for that, is he right?

Your partner sounds as though he would ignore loss of breathing, severe concusion or cutting off a finger.
He seems the kind of person who ignores serious symptoms until its too late and I would be concerned for the welfare of someone with this mentality.
But I'm glad you take your health seriously. I hope you feel some relief soon.

justasking111 · 30/10/2025 15:30

DH did this was sent for x-ray. Wasn't the bone. Back to GP told them it wasn't bone needed a scan. They agreed. Now the wait for a scan.

Wreckinball · 30/10/2025 15:31

OP you are entitled to a medically qualified opinion not an armchair DH view. Once he’s studied medicine for 5 years then done his post degree training you are prepared to hear his diagnosis once he has examined your knee! Is he the type of person to moan about the football referee on tv?
I saw a private physio as thought I’d tweaked a muscle, after prodding my knee a bit he sent me for an mri which I had to pay for and I’d done all sorts of things - if my knee locks up again or gets painful I can opt fo surgery but am managing - let the pros diagnose you

Kreepture · 30/10/2025 15:41

He won’t drive me to the hospital, it’s about half an hour from us and he’d rather not waste his time

so he's an abusive shitweasel then?

villanova · 30/10/2025 15:54

I second PPs that it might be a torn meniscus - I've had problems with mine since Feb, physio hasn't fixed it so now waiting for an MRI for definitive diagnosis. Just wanted to point out that if it's cartilage, that won't show up on x-ray, but it will rule out other causes. Good luck - if it is that, it's slow to heal, but you can help it along with the right exercises.

Your partner is an inconsiderate and unfeeling twat

From experience, my mum heard a popping noise and didn't do anything about it for 2 years as she was already on strong pain relief so assumed the GP wouldn't be able to do anything.

When the pain eventually got unbearable she went to the GP and was referred to her local physio and then orthopaedics and found out she had torn her meniscus and that's why the pain hadn't subsided.

Her pain was at the lower part of her knee and whenever she would turn or kneel on her knees it got a worse.

Please keep going back if the pain continues as she suffered for 2 years unnecessarily due to thinking she would be wasting GPs time.

This is not an accident, or an emergency. Don't go to A and E. Persistent soreness needs a GP referral for wait listed imaging, and an orthopaedic appointment as a follow up.

I don’t seem to be able to refer myself though, it looks as though I need to get put through by my GP

We can just book an appointment direct. Mad how different it is area to area! Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Northquit · 30/10/2025 16:16

We can self refer for physio. Although I believe we have someone at the GP surgery currently.

Anything that requires regular pain management and doesn't get better after following the basic advice on NHS website needs attention.

Well what a prince he is. If I were you I would go in a taxi. He’s supposed to care about you.

The GP has told me to book physio, so I will get this sorted.

Quite worried it’s serious now!

If its physio its not serious.

When I say serious I mean like a meniscus tear or something. I’m very active, I go to the gym a lot and enjoy walking and hiking so if I wasn’t able to do that while recovering from surgery I’d be gutted

outerspacepotato · 30/10/2025 17:54

This would be an ER visit where I am. OP needs X Rays and scans and an ortho consult. Depending on the findings, she would go the surgical route or the conservative medical management of knee brace and crutches and RICE and pain management with orthopedic followup and Physical therapy.

Sadly I don’t think you’d ever get this type of treatment in the UK

That's a shame. We pay through the nose for insurance, but my youngest had a knee injury just last year and this is standard care here. Her primary doc and urgent care would have just told her to go to the ER if she had tried to go there first. We were in and out including X Rays and scans in about 5 hours.

At least wrap it and elevate it as much as you can and stay off it. So sorry, knees are so painful.

You don't have to have surgery with a meniscus tear. In fact in the UK they prefer to treat it with physio exercises.

That depends on the type of tear. If it's a root tear (torn away from the bone), which is what I had, it won't get better without surgery.
