I have had knee pain for four months now, following completing a 5k run. I heard a ‘pop’ as I was running and it’s been sore ever since. I stopped running and exercising for two months, beyond walking and upper body exercises. That did nothing, so I’ve slowly incorporated some lower leg exercises back into my routine.

A week ago, I took a tumble and since then the pain has been nearly unbearable. I’ve got pain at the bottom of my kneecap, it is worse when walking or after a long period of time sitting down. It’s sore in the morning, and gets worse after any exercise.

I’ve put in a form at my GP, but my partner is horrified and thinks that I should just suck it up, or if it’s really bad pay for private physio as he thinks I’m wasting the GP’s time and it’s not bad enough for that, is he right?

I wouldn't go to the GP for that. Minor injuries definitely.

He won’t drive me to the hospital, it’s about half an hour from us and he’d rather not waste his time

What do you see in this absolute shit, @LunarLights1?

Lennonjingles · 30/10/2025 13:29

My DS hurt his knee playing football, he saw the GP next day who did a very thorough examination and knew what she was looking for, she said she was invited to many seminars offered by private orthopaedic consultants to learn how to do an examination. He had an acute crucial ligament injury which was confirmed when he had a scan on his knee.

orangeblosssom · 30/10/2025 13:29

You may have torn a ligament. Need to see a GP

Cakeandusername · 30/10/2025 13:32

Maybe get post moved to relationships. If he won’t drive you and you haven’t got access to money for an uber or taxi then it’s far bigger issue than a sore knee.
He’s your partner supposed to help and support you. I thought I’d broken a bone in foot tripping over jogging (a failed couchto5k attempt!) and DH drove me 45 mins, waited several hours outside (Covid he wasn’t allowed in) and drove me home after having bought me some lunch. That’s what you do if you care for someone.

BlackCatGoesHome · 30/10/2025 13:34

Do an online patient triage form on your GP's website. They can then tell you what the most appropriate course of action is. They may well refer you straight to physio.

This, really.

He sounds horrible OP, I’m sorry.

MummaMummaMumma · 30/10/2025 13:42

When I call my drs they have a triage system, they tell you if you need to see a Dr, nurse, go pharmacy etc. If they agreed with your husband they won't give you an appointment.

Thisisnotmyid · 30/10/2025 13:43

Can you self refer to physio instead? They can arrange things like x-rays etc if they feel it’s needed. GP won’t do much else anyway to be honest

It’s fine to see the gp. If you really want - you could ring the oractice and ask if they have a FCP physio you can see instead. Either is fine.

MayaPinion · 30/10/2025 13:49

Sounds like ACL to me. Get a diagnosis before going to a physio. We spent months and a lot of money working with a physio trying to get my daughter’s ACL back to normal. Eventually we went to the GP who sent her for an MRI and it turned out the ACL had snapped and no amount of physio would have repaired it (it still makes me rage now!). Definitely go to minor injuries in the first instance.

I don’t believe so, and I’m not entirely sure it’s the right person to see? I just want some relief, it feels like there’s something in the bottom of my knee

Courtesy of Dr Google: A torn meniscus is a common knee injury involving the C-shaped cartilage that cushions the knee joint. Symptoms include pain, swelling, a popping sensation at the time of injury, and a feeling of the knee locking or catching. (And it definitely needs to be taken seriously. I'm team "your partner is an idiot")

Unfortunately OP what you’re describing is exactly what happened to my partner when he tore his meniscus. Good luck to you

Daffydoll · 30/10/2025 13:59

Sounds like a meniscus tear. I had this and it’s so painful. Where it’s torn it sometimes catches and so your knee could lock or feel like something is there. I had mine repaired with keyhole surgery. It could potentially heal on its own but could take a year or more.

LushLemonTart · 30/10/2025 14:04

Your knee is the least of your problems.

outerspacepotato · 30/10/2025 14:09

Can you access funds to take an Uber or taxi?

When you see a doctor, please let them know that your partner refused to take you to access medical care.

Barton10 · 30/10/2025 14:12

This happened to me and it was torn meniscus which needed repairing with keyhole surgery. You need to get it checked.

You need medical advice and a new partner .Your knee problem sounds exactly like my sister and she’s having surgery on Saturday .

In most areas you can self refer for physio, if you feel that you can't wait that long then private physio. If you feel it is a more acute injury then minor injuries unit. Pharmacy if you need advice/ stronger pain relief. GP once you've exhausted all these options.

Your employer may be signed up to a workforce wellbeing plan that allows you to self refer for private physio.

Slimtoddy · 30/10/2025 14:22

You will need pain relief and probably physio. You need a GP for pain relief. I have had experience of private and NHS physio and I have to say NHS recently is better than private. One private physio made matters much worse.

You may also need XRay or MRI Scan which again best to use nhs

Wishitsnows · 30/10/2025 14:22

Your partner sounds awful thinking you don’t deserve medical attention. You absolutely do. I hope you have done nothing for him while he has sat on the couch for a week with a UTI.

Sunholidays · 30/10/2025 14:25

I had similar. It was a meniscus tear in my case. I filled in the form for the GP after a week or so of the pain not improving and I got referred to the NHS physio straight away.

However the physio cancelled my appointments twice and I ended up going private. It got better after 6 weeks and had to do 3 physio appointments with the corresponding exercises to strengthen the leg muscles and core.

I still do the exercises as I imagine that the tear is still there and I don't want the pain to come back. Every now and then I notice "something" in my knee when I walk uphill but that's all.

Would you be comfortable revealing this to a friend or family member to drive you instead?
If not, you are ashamed of the way he treats you and it's definitely time to get rid of him (and get a taxi or ring your mum).
