I have had knee pain for four months now, following completing a 5k run. I heard a ‘pop’ as I was running and it’s been sore ever since. I stopped running and exercising for two months, beyond walking and upper body exercises. That did nothing, so I’ve slowly incorporated some lower leg exercises back into my routine.

A week ago, I took a tumble and since then the pain has been nearly unbearable. I’ve got pain at the bottom of my kneecap, it is worse when walking or after a long period of time sitting down. It’s sore in the morning, and gets worse after any exercise.

I’ve put in a form at my GP, but my partner is horrified and thinks that I should just suck it up, or if it’s really bad pay for private physio as he thinks I’m wasting the GP’s time and it’s not bad enough for that, is he right?

I think you're perfectly entitled to seek help from your GP for it, but ime the NHS is pretty rubbish for anything musculoskeletal, and if you can, seeking help from a private physio will be much better for you.

Just go to A&E with a MIU where your doctor will direct you anyway and you'll be less far along the process as if you'd just gone there first.

When you say you can't get to a minor injuries unit, what do you mean by that? Are you very remote? Transport issues?

It’s miles away and a 35+ minute walk from the bus

Your partner is horrified that you’ve booked a GP appointment for a medical issue? Presumably if the pain magically disappeared prior to the appointment you’d cancel it, what does he think doctors are there for?

He thinks I’m wasting their time

Your partner is a d*ck and and idiot

Ideally you’d have seen a physio after the original “pop” a few weeks ago - tho they’d probably not have advised much different than you’ve already done.

depending on how it works in your area you’ve done right thing contacting GP. With ours it’s the same form for GPs as physios and then they will triage and make an appointment with the right person. In some areas you can also self refer direct to physio.

if you don’t get an appointment soon then you could look at going private. Private may also be better for ongoing support. I find the NHS physios mostly just give you a sheet of exercises and the leave you to it.

Daffidale · 30/10/2025 13:00

ps I buggered up my knee running about 15 years ago and it’s never been the same since. So it’s definitely worth getting properly checked and treated !!

nomas · 30/10/2025 13:02

LunarLights1 · 30/10/2025 12:14

I don’t think it’s bony as it’s been going on for so long before this, and I can’t get myself to minor injuries at the moment.

@nomashe’s awful. He’s recently had a slight urinary infection and spent over a week laid up on the sofa.

I thought so. What is even the point of him if he thinks you aren't worth medical treatment but he is? What is he good for?

rainbowsparkle28 · 30/10/2025 13:02

The pop to me is a clear flag there might be something more going on, can be something like an ACL. Not saying it is, but would be ridiculous to not get it seen to. Any decent partner would be driving you themselves to get it checked out as they would not want you to be in pain or to exacerbate any issues 🙄 You absolutely are not being unreasonable.

3luckystars · 30/10/2025 13:04

You need to get a doctor to look at it. Today.

3luckystars · 30/10/2025 13:05

Does your partner drive ? Can he bring you for an X-ray?

DiscoBob · 30/10/2025 13:08

You need imaging so tbh they'll send you to minor injuries or A&E. The GP can give you pain relief but can't see what's going on inside. I guess they could refer you to ortho specialist at the hospital.

Your husband is a prick for trying to say you should just tolerate it. I bet he'd be weeping and in an ambulance if it happened to him.

LunarLights1 · 30/10/2025 13:09

He won’t drive me to the hospital, it’s about half an hour from us and he’d rather not waste his time

I work at aGP surgery. This is totally appropriate for your contact. If they have a physio they can see you and refer for xray/scans. If no physio at surgery you may see an ACP/ANP/GP who can all help. In our region, MIU will only xray, not scan and only if injury occurred in the last 2 weeks. Hope you get sorted - knees are tricky.

nomas · 30/10/2025 12:11

YANBU, your partner is an idiot. Please go asap.

What's he like when he's ill or in pain?

Too right!! Get yourself seen, even if it only gets as far as a referral but you might have done a bit a damage.
ps, having seen your update maybe you should not waste your time with him.

ldnmusic87 · 30/10/2025 13:11

This is more minor injuries

Arlanymor · 30/10/2025 13:12

Sorry I misread 'months' for 'weeks' - my MIU limit is a month I believe. Is it worth calling 111 to get some advice? They might be able to signpost to other local MSK services and they can make appointments on your behalf? What's your partner going to do if your GP refers you to the hospital? He'll have to drive you then won't he? Why he is so unsupportive? I hope you get given crutches so you can poke him in the ribs with them... or somewhere more sensitive.

JudgeBread · 30/10/2025 13:12

Of course go to the doctor. While you're there, ask them about getting a uselessmanectomy. It's an elective procedure but I hear it can be really liberating.

Oh wow it gets better. He really does not care about you. What a pig. Please leave him, you deserve so much more.

cymrumam · 30/10/2025 13:15

Having paid privately for physio they still sent me to the doctors to investigate the issue with scans and x-rays so they knew how to treat it so you do need to see the GP

Needmorelego · 30/10/2025 13:15

Get him to pay for a taxi to the minor injury unit if he "can't be bothered to drive".
To be honest.... I would be looking very hard at continuing this relationship with his attitude.
What an arsehole.

nnyorks · 30/10/2025 13:18

From what you have described I would second it possibly being a torn cartilage I had similar experience in I had sports injury twisted my knee went to doctor he ignored how it happened told me it was from having child baring hips sent for physio a physio saying it was cos 1 leg shorter than the other 8years later of variant pain knee locking up swelling etc mentioned to a doctor again was sent for an MRI and severe torn cartilage had surgery and it’s been fine sine so go doctors say you suspect torn cartilage as you heard the pop and ask for MRI to rule it out

You have a bigger problem than your leg.

He is mean to you.

Get a bus elsewhere and keep going, or better yet, ask a family member or friend to collect you and bring you away from him for good. You will have a lot more health issues if you stay with someone who doesn’t even like you.

Sorry but your partner sounds awful. How horrible of him. If this was me, my partner would drive me to hospital any time of the day or night if I needed it, and he’d take care of me if I was in pain moving around and I’d do exactly the same for him. Please consider whether he’s the kind of person you really want to be with.

(joke!)

I’d go to the physio at our gps. You can see them relatively quickly, would be weeks and weeks for the GP.

I don’t seem to be able to refer myself though, it looks as though I need to get put through by my GP
