To ask about weight loss

I’m trying to lose weight. Last Friday I weighed 11s 4lb. I’ve totally cut out all chocs biscuits sweets etc and have been very healthy following the slimming world diet (loosely following), but generally just being very very healthy and walking

however I weighed myself in boots this morning and I’m now up by 1lb which I don’t understand apart from I drank a bottle of wine last night but surely that wouldn’t have made a massive difference? It was rose barefoot white Zinfandel

I know it’s not the best for some people, but weighing daily and taking a weekly average has worked for me and prevented me catastrophising when the scales go up one day. In doing it this way I know I’m 10lb down since August and it’s keeping me on track and accountable for the first time ever. That plus calorie counting and aiming for at least 5 days a week of being under calories and maybe a couple at maintenance has kept me not feeling deprived and meant I’ve not spiralled and binged because the scales say I’ve gained a lb or two!

I also weigh every day, and it's been really helpful to see the natural fluctuations in my weight, so I'm not discouraged by them any more. I must be like a sponge because I can lose or gain as much as 4lbs overnight, which seems simply to be water weight.

TattooStan · 30/10/2025 19:02

You need to consume around 3500 excess calories to gain a lb of fat. So you won't have done that by having a bottle of wine. If you weigh a lb more today, it will be water retention and glycogen in your muscles, and you'll be back to normal in a day or two.

As others have said, weight loss is a long term thing and you just want to observe a general trend over time. I'm always confused by diet clubs that have a weekly weigh in - weight goes up and down far too much on a daily/weekly/monthly basis for that to be of any use.

I've lost about 10lb in 2 years through getting into strength training, and have naturally wanted to make some small changes to my diet to support my new hobby. In the last year, I've watched my weight more closely because I'm on medication that can increase your appetite. My weight goes up and down all the time, but I know that 2 years ago I was about 9st5 and I'm now 8st8.

600 calories in a bottle of white wine.

If you want to lose weight you need to not drink alcohol. Vitamins, minerals, protein, omega fats, all are a higher need than alcohol

Gowlett · 30/10/2025 19:11

Being very very health v drank a bottle of wine.

Thanks for all good advice. One further question is a few of u mentioned staying away from processed foods, but this week I have used about 3 of Iceland’s slimming world ready meals which although processed, should be safe (I think) as made by slimming world and say free food. So my question is, should I still stick with these ready meals ? I do cook but not a great cook so ready meals by slimming world seemed like a good option.

Spend a week calorie counting all the food you have following Slimming World....I think you will be surprised by how many you are consuming!

Hey OP .
Some advice ..
Well this depends on your age , I’m 50 next week .. I lost weight , too much , was horribly thin ..
I lost my bum & it sagged , I wasn’t big to begin with , size 10/12 , went to 6/8 .
I’m 5/4 height ..
I’m fine now again , took me 2 years though ..
I’m slim not skinny ..
My advice is go to gym & do weight training to maintain muscle..
3 days a week is plenty..
Book one session with a PT & they’ll show you what exercises to do ..
Or do 2 or 3 exercise classes a week if you don’t like gym .
That’s what I do now , 2 circuit classes a week..
Each class is 1 hour long , all women In around my own age so no feelings of being uncomfortable ☺️..
Best of luck x

But I’ve put on rather than lost which is ridiculous after all the work I’ve put in (apart from the wine)

Did you use the same scales both times you weighed yourself? Different sets of scales vary.

TicklishMintDuck · 30/10/2025 20:50

cardibach · 30/10/2025 10:50

And yet I’ve lost about 3 stone without doing that. It’s about more than just alcohol.

May I ask what you did, please? I’m trying to lose weight and wine is one of my few vices!

HealthyWeightBy40 · 30/10/2025 20:59

YABU to expect to lose weight in 6 days after drinking an entire bottle of wine 🤣

Calorie counting via MFP plus walking for the first 2 stone. Slimpod and much more exercise, including weights and boxing, for the last. I’ve plateaued though and still want to lose more. Just focusing on health and strength for now though.

MeridaBrave · 30/10/2025 22:15

Was it different scales? Either way 1lb loss would be good after a lot of effort and 2lb gain normal after drinking so overall sounds about right.

TokyoTantrum · 31/10/2025 09:25

In a week, honestly, it's pretty rare to see an actual change, even if you had reduced your calorie input versus output. Do you menstruate? You might find that you lose weight in sync with your cycle. When I'm reducing, often I'll be a steady weight over the course of the month but then after my period, I'll finally be lighter.

BTW the best way to be honest with yourself is to keep a food diary and track everything you eat. The way that worked for me was taking photos of every single thing I ate. Even a bite of chocolate, snapped it before it went it my mouth. At the end of the week I could look back at what I had really eaten.

You are probably consuming more calories than you realise, especially if alcohol is involved.

Biggles27 · 01/11/2025 05:07

As someone who has been on a prescribed diet for over 3 years and has lost a lot of weight - yes the wine can do that. If you’re female, hormones can do that. If you’ve had a lot of carbs one day - it can do that. If you’ve had more salt than normal - it can do that. You’re better looking at your overall loss over a month

i daily way and it’s up and down more often than a tarts knickers! But I take my recorded weight at the same time, same day of the week, no clothes, after a pee, nothing to eat or drink, first thing in the morning

TattooStan · 01/11/2025 06:52

I see you're asking about Slimming World ready meals, OP.

To answer your question, I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. I'd rather starve!
They are pure processed shite, and will be packed with salt, sugar (probably in the form of high fructose corn syrup), trans fats (palm oil) and all sorts of other junk.

Stick to real, nutrient-dense food: Greek yoghurt, eggs, oats, meat, lentils, vegetables etc.

Comedycook · 01/11/2025 06:55

Saying this in the nicest way op...but after reading all your posts, it seems like you really know very little about food, nutrition and weight loss. What did you actually eat last week?

notasausage · 01/11/2025 15:13

Use a calorie counting tracker like my fitness pal and calculate your calorie intake needed for base line and to lose weight - loads of websites you can use for this. It’s the only thing that’s ever worked for me. Lost 2 stone in 5 months through the summer and have maintained since. I found it really useful for understanding where the high calorie food were that I could cut but also what bulky things I could eat that were filling but low calorie. You can still have the odd treat and if you have a day or two of going over your weight loss calorie target it’s still fine - you just might not lose as much/anything that week but you haven’t undone all your good work.

If your going to follow sw, you’ve got to do it properly. It won’t work if you only loosely follow it. I haven’t done it for a couple of years but when I started I lost quite a bit in the first week. From what I remember a small glass of wine was about 8 sinns, so unsure what the bottle would amount to. Follow it strictly and you’ll see it work

Popadomorbread · 01/11/2025 23:11

Did you wear the boots when you first weighed as that could account for the gain??

mumtobhoyandghirl · 01/11/2025 23:25

Please read @SpiralSister and avoid slimming world that talk about sins and free foods. There’s no such thing good protein and fibre 150g protein dailyn , get your steps and do some weight training as more muscle mass burns calories. I gain 5lbs every 4weeks on my cycle which goes straight back off I keep consistent and use weight as a tool but pictures, clothes and measurement are more accurate

MiddleAgedDread · 02/11/2025 18:58

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:20

Yes it was a different scales.. I’m back to slimming world tomorrow so will see what the weight is then

Here’s part of your issue! Weigh your naked first thing in the morning after you’ve been to the loo if you want consistent weights.

Polly2710 · 04/11/2025 14:12

Our weight fluctuates, you won't have put a 1lb of fat on in the week you may just be retaining water. I calorie count and I can stick to 1200-1300 calories every day and somedays my weight goes up even though I know I'm in a calorie deficit. After a holiday in summer my scales showed a massive 10lb gain. I hadn't overeaten by 35000 calories in a week (1lb of fat is approximately 3500 calories surplus), but alcohol and eating more rubbish meant my body retained water. The scales went back down within 2 weeks, and for me to lose 10lbs of fat would have taken 2 months.

DarkPassenger1 · 04/11/2025 14:15

Different scales, different times of day, different outfits, will all have a massive impact. I can be half a stone different from morning to night, clothed to unclothed!

Get into the habit of weighing yourself at the same time each morning, before a shower, keep track of your progress, then you know it's genuine and know what you're working with.

Harrysmummy246 · 04/11/2025 14:19

It takes far more than one week, especially when it fluctuates through a monthly cycle.
And a bottle of wine is definitely not going to help.
You don't have to give everything up, just be moderate

rainbowunicorn · 04/11/2025 16:01

Well, you say you are loosely following slimming world. You cant really loosely follow it. Either do it or dont. You cant just pick and choose when and what to do. If you are loosely following g them I can guarantee you will not be successful long term.
