Do you ever think that kissing is strange?

Im single. I go on dates now and then. Over the last two years, I have kissed three men. The men I've dated always want to kiss with tongues. I prefer to just kiss on the lips, no tongue.

After each of the last three men that I kissed with tongues, I got really badly sick afterwards. They passed something onto me..After kissing them, I got a cold, I had a sore throat, I was burning up. I was sick for avout five days each time.

It made me think , Isn't kissing with tongues such a strange thing to do. We use condoms for sex to protect us from infections.

The tongue is an absolute hotspot for all kinds of bad bacteria, yet society tells us its normal for a man to shove his tongue, unprotected into our mouth.

Im now seeing a new guy. He wants to kiss with tongues and I have refused. I will kiss on the lips only. I don't want to get sick again

It might sound revolting in theory but in practise it is bloody amazing (when done well). Very little feels nicer!!

I think that poster means GIVING oral sex.

I don't like it. Not for want of trying, and some partners have been better at it than others. As is clear on any thread like this, we're all made differently!

She didnt say it was a new thing. She said when we first heard of it.

It was invented by someone as a social romantic idea at some stage.

Presumably some group of people started doing it, then invaded another country, and brought the practice there

Edited

But who is we?! We found it strange… who did?

I really like this podcast series anyway, but this episode is about the anthropological reason why we kiss. There is a biological reason - and beats doing it the way other animals do it!

I'm single and really miss kissing someone.

Thanks for linking a source. Nice to meet a fellow Weird Anthropology enthusiast!

I don’t mind kissing with tongues but I prefer to be the one that initiates it.

Greenwitchart · 29/10/2025 15:54

I am with you OP.

I hate the sight of people who do it on public and can't stand the sounds associated with it.

Also most men are so bad at it...

Twoshoesnewshoes · 29/10/2025 15:54

I dont like kissing with tongues, DP loves it so I do it to indulge him but could happily never do it again!
I like giving oral sex when in the mood, dont like receiving it as it’s boring for me 🤷‍♀️
I have a great sex life

zazazaaar · 29/10/2025 15:56

Loads of cultures dont do kissing across the world. Which means you are not alone in finding it weird!

Onlyinthrees · 29/10/2025 16:08

I’ve always thought it is generally used as a way to sort of communicate your intentions in a nonverbal way, to test out whether your partner wants to go further/ how keen they are and to try to move things along.
If someone enthusiastically responds, it’s clear you’re on the same page. If they don’t, it’s clear that you’re not.

I remember my first proper kiss with tongues in Turkey on holiday as a 14 year old - the Turkish cabin boy (man i guess, but he seemed pretty immature in some ways) was the best kiss with tongues i have ever had. It was so good, I actually could have spent all night kissing him. He was really good looking so that probably made a difference lol 😆

My DH gave me an amazing first kiss with tongues when we were first going out but it wasn't a patch on Turkish mega kisser. Sorry DH lol 😆 😅

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 29/10/2025 16:27

No thoughts either way re tongues/not but i often wonder which member of humanity first thought that kissing was a good idea.
Doesnt happen outside our species i dont think.
A bit like who thought of melting rocks to get metal and who first discovered bread, etc.

BMW6 · 29/10/2025 16:37

I adored open mouth "deep" kissing with slight tongue touch now and then, but absolutely loathed tongue thrusters when they poke it in your mouth repeatedly . Put me right off and i asked them to stop doing it or bye bye.

My late DH was my perfect kisser. Now hes gone and I'm 67 i doubt I'll have any more kissing.

Ah well, I had my share and then some 😏

Someone who you fancy the pants off, love a good passionate snog (with tongues).

Dogmaz · 29/10/2025 16:50

Isn't it more to do with how attractive you find someone.. i would find it gross to snog someone I didn't fancy much but with my guy who I fancy the pants off it's my favourite thing to do

Not for me. The last guy I dated, I found hin very attractive. I still hated the idea of him sticking his tongue in my mouth.

It's all about hormones isn't it, which might account for people liking it less as they get older.

TMMC1 · 29/10/2025 16:57

OP you sound young. I feel you just haven’t met anybody you’re comfortable with yet and you are “dating” and “kissing” because that’s what you think is expected rather than because you want to. There is no rush. It will come together in time.

FlowersFawb · 29/10/2025 16:59

I've been with my partner 14 years. Day to day we kiss on the lips but when we get down to business we proper snog with tongues and I love it...it signals sexy time to me haha 🤣

I am not young. I am 41!

I don't know how you think I sound young - by me saying that I don't like tongues.

Several women on here have written that they liked kissing less - as they got older.

Yes maybe it is hormonal too.

I never liked tongue kissing. But I could bear it when I was younger. Now I am 41, I just hate it.

And the older I get, I am also more empowered to say no.

Younger me would have gone along with it, even though I didnt like it.

This is an intrusive thought I often get while mid snog with husband. It usually makes me start sniggering uncontrollably.

It is a weird thing to do but so are a lot of things humans do. I'm just relieved men aren't like tropical birds, poor Mr Bread would never get laid if he had to perform a fabulous dance to entice me every time he was in the mood.

Mine does a special 'noodle' dance. It's not remotely erotic but it does make me chuckle.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 29/10/2025 17:36

I’m autistic so I should be forgiven for hating it. I just don’t see the point of mashing our lips together and poking tongues. Plus I’m usually too tired to be bothered. DH always wants to and I dread it tbh.

TenGreatFatSquirrels · 29/10/2025 18:53

While I also prefer just to lips kiss you’re just as likely to get sick from that as tongue kissing. You’re still smearing spit on each other

DiscoBob · 29/10/2025 18:56

It's a really a very intimate exchange of germs etc, possibly equal to sex. But people often do it with near strangers. I mean those that would never have sex with someone they just met.

So in that respect it is a bit odd. I guess you could catch loads of things from kissing but people just think maybe it's less 'embarrassing' than catching an STI as you couldn't always attribute it to kissing someone.
