Im being silly about buying period pants

I think I want to buy new period pants, I bought 4 Modibodi pairs but then I shrunk them/got fatter and then I bought some from m&s that were so uncomfortable I threw them in the bin. I looked at buying more Modibodi ones but theyre at least 15 pounds each so two pairs a day (which i think is what I'd wear?) for my 4 day period is going to cost £120. £120 to spend just on pants seems nuts. I dont want to have to remember to wash them during my period, I know what I'm like I wont remember.

There's no mess.

I use a mooncup, I remove over, and empty into, the loo. Wipe with toilet paper. Rinse, reinsert.

Daughter uses the pants. Changes them when using loo, pops them in lidded bucket in bathroom. I empty said bucket into the machine every couple of days, run on a rinse cycle, add rest of washing and run as usual.

It's almost ridiculously easy!

I’m not convinced, but clearly so many women are happy with this system, so it must be great but perhaps these were people who used to wear pads previously and have dealt with heavy leaky periods.

Pulling a cup full of blood from my vagina and then having to wipe it and then rinse before inserting it again sounds like a lot of hassle and mess - but I appreciate better for the planet

The pants however, you’ve got to be on it, washing them soon after taking them off or they would smell very very bad of old blood. I’m not sure I’m organised enough for that!

Tampons with an applicator for me all the way, I don’t have to touch anything and just flush them down the loo (I know it’s not great and should probably go in the bin). It’s a minor inconvenience and no mess.

It's the fact they can leak, and need frequent changing, and have risks like TSS.

The pants really don't smell. I rinse mine out immediately because it simply isn't a big task (1.5 minutes?) and then let them air dry if not laundering immediately and there really isn't the faintest whiff.

But you don't have to try them. I was sceptical like you.

The other thing I would add is that if you touched the absorbent part with a piece of white tissue, it would not have any blood on it even if "full". A pp explained this (hitherto perplexing) phenomenon by noting that the fabric only allows liquids to pass in one direction - so they really are not wet or messy to deal with at all.

That’s cool, I didn’t know that about the fabric.

Neither did I, but it explains a lot. I was genuinely full of child-like wonder before I understood how that was happening!

And wherever it gets "held" has an antibacterial effect, which is why they don't smell.

I was definitely not at all interested in them until recently; they sounded like a recipe for disaster to me, but I had a lovely cream dress to wear to a summer party and I don't like the bulk of pads so got a pair simply as a potential leak safeguard.

Then I got curious and wore them overnight and found they are really quite surprising in their capabilities!

The thing I think they are best for is young girls.

I well remember that feeling of pressure to manage using tampons (all those strange diagrams on the pamphlet!) ahead of a first time swimming etc, and it is nice to think young girls have a much easier transition.

Mine have lasted about a year. I have 10 pairs. I wear them all the time though so they would last longer if you were only wearing during your period.

Edited

By lasting, do you mean they just stop looking nice or did they start leaking unexpectedly?

I used to use tampons so I've got a good basis for comparison and it's really not a faff. Especially as I only do it twice a day - first and last thing as it holds so much!

I do like being a zero waste period household too 🙂

My modibodi ones had the gusset but (which has the absorbent padding in) came unsewn, making them unusable.
