Hurricane Melissa has arrived in Jamaica. Apparently it could be as bad as Hurricaine Katrina 😳.

Wishing the very best to the people on the island, and Jamaicans around the world who are worried, and may have family there.

My colleague’s son has been told that the hurricane has left Jamaica. Where they were being kept safe started to flood so they’ve had to go upstairs. They’ve been told about the risk of crocodiles in the flood water too.

Oh wow the hurricane has passed, thats it?!

Yes, flooding next 😪

Awful and looks really scary.

So sorry for the people of Jamaica and hope they stay safe.

BBC keep showing a British family, visiting for half term ( to celebrate their silver wedding). I can't help but wonder why our airlines/holiday companies flew them into this. There were hurricane warnings.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/10/2025 22:16

Absolutely. Terrifying. 185 mph sustained winds initially, just mind blowing.

MackenCheese · 28/10/2025 22:17

I was in Jamaica when hurricane Gilbert hit . Its 38 years ago to the day that Melissa is now there. Gilbert was category 4, Melissa category 5, and slow moving. Prayers for the people of Jamaica 🙏🏿

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/10/2025 22:31

Just watching the news, it’s not completely left Jamaica yet. Must just be the part where he is.

🙄

💯 right. The number of category 4 and 5 hurricanes has increased rapidly in the last 20 years and meteorologists are now talking about a category 6. The fossil fuel companies should be paying for this. It is on them. This was not the storm of the century, just a taste of things to come. And the person who put the rolling eyes emoji up needs to grow up.

We need to be clear. This isn’t a natural disaster. It’s a crime. This is climate warfare. The elite of this world sit by as our ecosystems are destroyed, because it’ll never impact them. We need to start taking action.

This is on the fossil fuel companies and they should be paying for it. And as for the person who put a rolling eyes emoji on your comment, they need to grow up. None of us are going to escape. The food shortages have already started.

It is absolutely terrible. Jamaicans are excellent people and some of the most resilient I have met. I hope the multitude of aid agencies are able to support Jamaica sufficiently through this desperate situation.

Agree. People carrying on jetting about everywhere and driving huge SUVs and endlessly buying crap like there's no tomorrow.

I have just been reading the comments section on the Mail website, wish I hadn't, the lack of empathy, the sick jokes and general unpleasantness were really depressing. How anyone can see the news and find this entertaining is beyond me. I know that the Mail is a rag but honestly some of the comments were disgusting.

I’m assuming you don’t have any Halloween decorations up then, drive an EV and have electric heaters?

I use trains and cycle. Have used the same decorations for 20 years and have solar panels that power the house. HTH.

Absolutely! We will get through this.

The government has been preparing for this, so will be mobilising soon to start the rebuilding efforts as soon as it's safe to do so.

There are groups from the diaspora that flew down from London in preparation for helping the communities worst affected, with food, clothing ans cleaning. I know the same is happening/has happened in the US and Canada.
There are local groups as well who are working with the government and community organisations to mobilise soon.

Our little island has overcome many adversities and we will come through this too. Each one will help one.

We appreciate all the prayers, well wishes and support 🙏🏾.

One love 🇯🇲.

Jamaicans have been in all our families thoughts today Flowers. I am glad to hear there were good preparations in place but I still really feel for everyone impacted

Absolutely! It's been devastating watching the damage caused and we still have people who are out of contact as networks are down. It's an awful time.

@mumofoneAloneandwell , thank you for the thread 🇯🇲❤️.

SeemedClear · 29/10/2025 18:05

Just watching the news, the damage to Jamaica is horrendous.

Wondering about donations to help? I can't imagine how frightening and devastating this is. 🇯🇲 💚

LaLaLoca · 29/10/2025 18:22

Hi @SeemedClear whilst travelling today a politician representing Jamaica was being interviewed on radio four world at one. He mentioned that there is a specific fundraising page where donations go directly to communities impacted by this disaster. Here is the link to the radio four world at one https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002lfwb?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

it had a Jamaica.gov in the web address. Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people potentially setting up bogus appeals but this will go directly to communities.

My lovely friend and her husband have family living there, they can’t make contact and are just watching and waiting. It’s so upsetting.
