Hurricane Melissa has arrived in Jamaica. Apparently it could be as bad as Hurricaine Katrina 😳.

Wishing the very best to the people on the island, and Jamaicans around the world who are worried, and may have family there.

I heard this. My thoughts are with everyone. Must be very scary waiting for it to hit.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 28/10/2025 17:20

I agree. Thinking of residents, friends and family. V worrying.

lifeonmars100 · 28/10/2025 17:21

Just been messaging one of my friends, the majority of her family live in Jamacia, she is really worried. I have been thinking about everyone out there a lot, it must be so frightening.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 28/10/2025 17:21

I dont know that lots of people were able to evacuate 😳

Having seen countless idiotic tiktokers on the beaches there, I hope they don’t expect to be rescued. It’s Darwinism at it’s finest but a lot of Jamaicans seem to be very blasé about it.
It could be biblical in it’s destruction and loss of life.
There are apparently 5000 Brits there who couldn’t get flights home. I would not like to be one of them.

mamagogo1 · 28/10/2025 17:27

Just hoping that the housing stock and infrastructure holds up better than some other places. I have a friend who is on standby from 6am tomorrow to fly relief flights as needed, thankfully it looks like one of the airports shouldn’t be affected too badly, it’s a larger island

I'm saddened that there might not be an urgency in evacutation for residents though 😳

This thing sounds terrifying

beAsensible1 · 28/10/2025 17:34

It’s terrifying honestly. And phones and electricity is out in some places.

it’s Jamaican attitude to be blase about everything 😅 and obviously hurricanes are part of life there but this is such a big one.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 28/10/2025 17:36

Hope it's not as bad as they say.

Ncforthistopiced · 28/10/2025 17:37

Scary for everyone there🙏Hope the winds will not be as bad as predicted 🙏

ThatLadyLadyShesTheMan · 28/10/2025 17:42

We need to be clear. This isn’t a natural disaster. It’s a crime. This is climate warfare. The elite of this world sit by as our ecosystems are destroyed, because it’ll never impact them. We need to start taking action.

Arlanymor · 28/10/2025 17:42

Not unreasonable at all - it's very scary. I just hope that despite being Cat 5 that the winds don't get up to the estimated levels. When I was on honeymoon in Barbados I was speaking to a bartender about Hurricane Janet... horrifying.

Latest reports say about as bad as Katrina, but Jamaica doesn't have the same defences or infrastructure as USA

This could be dire

Wishing everyone in the Caribbean all the best

Yes, apparently it's going to hit Cuba next.

Really awful, for the whole of the Caribbean.

I live on a different Caribbean island that luckily is not being hit by Melissa but just in regards to your comment about being "blasé " about it....after years and years of hurricane prep every summer, doing a proper hurricane shutdown 3/4 times per summer for then nothing to hit, you do get a bit tired of it all. Every time there is a possible hurricane, everyone gets sent home, you have to do all your hurricane shutters/board up your windows, prep enough food for 3-4 days, save water in the bathtub, charge everything, and basically be prepared to have no electricity or water for days. Even if nothing happens, the water and electricity companies shut down anyway in anticipation of the storm. It's all a big faff and by the time the morning comes, the storm never came or it wasn't half bad. Also, even if it was bad, if you're home, you can manage some of the damage and flooding.

And if you have pets, there is nowhere to go. Only very few shelters take pets, they need to be small ones and in a crate, so a lot of people don't have the heart to leave their big dog behind to drown and would rather stay with them.

I'm not saying it's right, and especially as I have a 1 year old I take every storm extremely seriously, but I can see why people reach a certain fatigue with it all.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 28/10/2025 18:07

The BBC have the best coverage i'm seeing

Hoping so much that its not as bad as predicted 🥺

Thank you for this explanation - I can imagine that people have seen off storms before?

Also, is there a wealth divide in evacuations maybe?

One of my colleagues sons is out there. They were due to fly home today. Tried to bring it forwards but couldn’t.

They’ve had to move hotels and where they are now is using its rooms with the least windows (auditorium and meeting rooms) which have been boarded up to keep everyone safe.

I’ve been to the island many times; it’s a special place. Driving from Montego Bay to Negril is a bit of an eye opener in terms of how many people live: in tin shacks or wooden homes. I doubt those homes will survive this. It’s extremely worrying.
