Can Richard just not shhhhh and let Marina speak?! I wanted to hear what she had to say about her interview with Glen Powell but he interrupted her so many times I lost track of what she was saying. Contrast it with how she behaves when he speaks.

I like him, I'm interested in what he has to say but can he not just let her speak?
I feel like he is just like so many men who talk over women.

This is Glen Powell, He was the smirky modern-day Iceman character in the Top Gun sequel. I think this is what he does -- he takes off his shirt and makes gorilla triumph noises, or he smirks. Sometimes both. In Twisters he smirked while wearing a Stetson and some regrettable jeans.

Every time they mention Glen bloody Powell and think they are talking about Glen Campbell.

Me too, I am showing my age, I wonder why Marina is obsessed by him I mean he is "good looking " but hardly an iconic interviewee.

I'm glad it's not just me! He's such a lovely & clever guy but his interruptions & constant 'actually I'm right' assertions get a little much.

Oh to have the confidence of a man!

I only just started listening to this with the Traitors episodes. Marina can barely finish her thoughts. It is very stressy.

Meanwhile on the Rest is History, the two hosts manage to discuss everything like adults.

That's really funny about Glen Powell/Glen Campbell. I'm going to have 'Rhinestone Cowboy' as an earworm for the rest of the day.

I'm not sure where Marina's obsession with him arose either -- is he one of those actors about whom she wonders whether they're in on the joke of themselves? Like Steven Seagal, another of her left of field loves?

I do love TRIE though, even when they are talking about things i have no knowledge of (modern pop stars and their beefs with each other is one) and am baffled by Marina's apparent inability to understand how a top 10 works.

The insights into how the world of celebrity works is amazing. I love that Richard never has a bad word to say about anyone.

I've given up on it too. I love Marina but she talks quite quickly and needs to get into a flow and Richard constantly interrupts her. The ads are also out of control for what's actually quite a short podcast.

Haha this is perfectly damning and such a good observation.

I suspect she talks fast for the same reason i do: a combination of boarding school and then working in a male dominated environment. You have to get your words out fast or not at all.

I used to like Richard but this podcast has made me aware that he’s a bloviating cynic.

And he says ‘by and large’ far too often.

Yuk.

He's probably a " male feminist".

Marina is also slightly obsessed with Guy Ritchie who she hates, or at least hates his work .

I think he thinks he’s one of the good guys, but when I listened to the episode about Greg whatshisname from Masterchef, he was saying all the “correct” things about him, but he minimised what he had done quite a bit and seemed to be making excuses for him. I suspect if you got him in a quiet corner he would think it was all fuss about nothing.

He pretends to be self deprecating but he also never admits he is wrong.

Christ he sounds dull.

He did say women in tv were all very tough....... Its so disappointing when smart, funny men show themselves up like this. I have a group of male friends from a hobby who are all quite nice, all see themselves as quite liberal and progressive - and who all pull shit like this regularly. It is like they just cannot see what they are doing at all.

I think part of the problem is that Marina (as much as I love her as a print journalist) is a poor broadcaster. Her commentary is all over the place - she starts thoughts and doesn't finish them, forgets to give any context and just generally babbles. A lot of Richard interrupting is him trying to structure her stream of consciousness, although I agree he also loves an opportunity to dominate a topic. I really liked this podcast to begin with but am gradually going off it.

I wonder why Richard wants this gig. He already does TV and book writing, that must take up so much time. These podcasts bring in a lot of money but he must have made millions already.

also, is Marina the only woman on Goalhanger’s podcast roster? Sports, history, politics all male hosts, presumably light entertainment was the one arena they could find room for a woman host in 🙄

@Colinfromaccounts Anita Anand is co-host on the Empire podcast. She and William Dalrymple work well together. My only criticism has been when they had William Dalrymple’s son on to talk about Partition when I’m sure there are far better qualified people who could have done it.

I listened to this episode this morning and thought exactly this. It's the first time I've noticed it but now I have, I can imagine I'll be far more aware of it - and annoyed by it - in future.

It was very annoying as he was ruining the flow of her bit, just to make fairly unfunny comments.

That being said, I generally love the podcast and I think the 2 of them bounce well off each other for the most part.

Oh I love the podcast - I like their back-and-forth, I like the way it gallops off randomly in different directions, the endless sidebars.

I agree Richard can sometimes seem a little self-satisfied but I think they work well together and I adore Marina - the combination of being incredibly intelligent and witty but also just constantly a bit chaotic.

@BoredZelda I think that was the episode that put me off listening for a while. He said something about pulling someone up about inappropriate behaviour & modelled the conversation, in which he completely minimised it. Pissed me off so much, I don't know how he can't see that makes him part of the problem.

I've also noticed that Dominic from TRIH tends to minimise the female experience from sexual predators - guessed long before I learned that he doesn't have a daughter. Easy to tell that Tom H does.

I do love how Marina is rubbish at hiding her real feelings for celebs - you can always tell exactly what she thinks even when she's not being explicit.

I find Marina very articulate and interesting, if a bit jaded and cynical. Richard I'm afraid I find a bit dull
