Can Richard just not shhhhh and let Marina speak?! I wanted to hear what she had to say about her interview with Glen Powell but he interrupted her so many times I lost track of what she was saying. Contrast it with how she behaves when he speaks.

I like him, I'm interested in what he has to say but can he not just let her speak?
I feel like he is just like so many men who talk over women.

i struggled through the Ben Elton ep because it was really really interesting.

But i do not understand Marina's obsession with Glen Powell (and i have read the interview) so i won't bother with this week's ep.

Perhaps we all need to write in and tell Richard to butt out a bit?

pjani · 28/10/2025 12:57

This is my favourite podcast and I think it's worth remembering that neither of them (to my knowledge) are professional 'speakers'.

I know Richard has hosted a million quiz shows but he's not been an interviewer (which I think you can tell when they've interviewed people on the show - he always talks too much), and Marina is obviously a print journalist.

What would I be like if I was shoved on a podcast due to my experience on other things? Interrupting all over the place. They are both smart, knowledgeable and regularly crack me up so I definitely forgive the interruptions.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 28/10/2025 12:55

Can I just add my other minor gripe about TRIE? I have no idea who Glenn Powell is. I kept hearing him referred to on the podcast, and obviously he was discussed at length today but they spent so long talking over each other that I didn’t get any smarter by the end. So now I feel like I know the name Glenn Powell, and I’ve seen Marina‘s interview with Glenn Powell online over the weekend, but I have a strange Glen Powell shaped hole in my mind because I have no context whatsoever.

Me, neither. I did eventually look him up because I had no idea who he was, or why he seemed to be a running joke, and he's that's oddly smug-looking actor who played the cocky young pilot in Top Gun: Maverick and the cocky young Youtube tornado chaser in Twisters. He has a weird mouth/lower face, or an odd smile, or something. That's all I've got.

His point about meeting someone who had interviewed Monroe was interesting but could have been made at the end of what Marina was saying.
Someone said they found it stressful - that's exactly it. It's stressful because she can never get into her stride, she just starts to make a point and then he starts again.

I also agree he had got better. There were a lot of comments about him interrupting on one of their Instagram posts and after that he improved.
But today was dreadful.

Really? Yes, I figured other listeners must be saying this in large numbers, and I did think he'd improved for a bit, before relapsing again more recently.

Ilovehighlandcows · 28/10/2025 13:27

Richard has been getting worse recently - and also I think Marina is subconsciously compensating by talking faster than usual and not finishing sentences just because she needs to get to the point she's trying to make, only for Richard to talk over her anyway.

I hope someone in production reads this thread and gives the feedback to them.

I like them both and love what they discuss but the interrupting is definitely making it stressful to listen to.

LadyDanburysHat · 28/10/2025 13:31

I have seen this podcast come up in social media a lot recently, and it all says the same thing. Can Richard please shut up and stop interrupting.

I hope he is reading it and tries to rein it in. Because I do think both have very interesting insights into things.

HollywentLightly · 28/10/2025 13:36

I really like them both and the podcast but it's too like a conversation in the pub than something an outsider wants to listen to. Richard definitely needs to rein himself in and let Marina finish a sentence but they do seem to like each other and I hope it's not intentional on his part. I love when Marina gives him a one word reply, like dealing with an interrupting toddler.

And yes to the insane monthly subscription. When I looked at it, it was £7 for an extra 20 mins a week - absolute rip off.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 28/10/2025 13:49

Unfortunately I think he is one of the good guys. He seems like a nice man. But the talking over women is such a common thing in men, he must be blind to it.

WatchingTheDetective · 28/10/2025 14:12

I'm not sure that the problem is that he's talking over women - I think that's what he's like and he'd be doing it no matter who he's talking to.

I really love their enthusiasm. I particularly love Marina who's so enthusiastic she can't talk fast enough. Both of them are so intelligent and it's great to hear them talking, but I wish they'd slow down and allocate a bit more time to the podcast.

I agree about the cost of subscription - it's about half my Netflix subscription for an extra half an hour a week!

EmmaStone · 28/10/2025 14:13

Ah I like it, and lots of people in telly listen to it - Richard constantly affirming what it's like to work in telly is comfort during a very difficult period.

I quite like all the silly puns and in jokes, but can sometimes sense Marina's frustration with Richard (which can also be quite funny). I think it's obvious that he really admires and respects her work, but he can sometimes ger a bit over excited when he thinks of a new pun.

He wasn't talking over Ben Elton, though. (Though I suspect Ben Elton would be extremely difficult to talk over -- it was pretty much wall-to-wall monologue, despite technically being a Q and A in response to listener questions.)

I'm glad I'm not the only one gobsmacked by the monthly membership subscription! I really like the podcast, interruptions notwithstanding, and I'm particularly enjoying their Celebrity Traitors episodes, but that's too much.

Yes, the subscription is ridiculous. I pay just a little bit more for a different podcast and, in return, get an extended episode each week (can be around 60-90 minutes extra) and a whole extra 90-minute episode every week too!

Disasterclass · 28/10/2025 14:56

I really liked them both before the podcast, and listen every week but Richard Osman has definitely gone down in my estimation due to the way he speaks over Marina. Yes, he’s knowledgeable but she is much cleverer than him and it’s so frustrating.

on another note, I started listening to Louis Theroux’s podcast as I like his tv shows and he’s absolutely terrible. I had to switch off the one with Steve Coogan as he kept interrupting, asking another question before he’d finished answering the last one and generally being annoying

Shamesame · 28/10/2025 15:03

I’m a weekly listener and originally thought Marina was unbearably smug but now I think she’s brilliant and bright and funny and Richard desperately needs a better producer or more preferably a live editor to control him, stop him from interrupting and encourage him to be brief in his answers rather than saying the same thing 8 times in a 5 min monologue.

Do you mind me asking what that is? I'm ridiculously very new to the world of podcasts and still looking for stuff that's intelligent but also diverting.

Perhaps a producer could give him a small electric shock for interruptions. Increasing in intensity like the Milgram experiment...? 😀

Sartre · 28/10/2025 15:05

I tried it once and couldn’t do it to myself again. My friend recommended it because I’m an avid listener of TRIP UK and US and also TRIH. I hated it. I like Richard but found him extremely irritating on this. Maybe I’m not the target market though, I don’t really know much about reality TV and such.

BetteDavisChin · 28/10/2025 15:05

How odd! I've watched it once after following a link about Celebrity Traitors. My impression was that Marina was interrupting Richard 😳

I'm afraid it's not a very intelligent one (well, it is within the bounds of the premise, I suppose). It's a paranormal podcast called Mysterious Universe. Will only really be of interest if you enjoy stories of the supernatural/esoterica/etc.

For intelligent podcasts, I can recommend Weird Studies (much more academic than it sounds), Hardcore History, and Ologies.

LadyDanburysHat · 28/10/2025 15:07

I do love the Traitors episodes, and think their insights into how celebrities work and how that is translating in the castle is fascinating

I’d happily pay into a Patreon for that!

plus a new side podcast the rest is questionable psych experiments from the past (TRIQPEFTP)

I really recommend the Private Eye podcast. It's only once a fortnight.

Well, it's often about film and TV and journalism, or publishing, as well. Maybe reality TV has ramped up in terms of TRIE content recently with the Celebrity Traitors, but I'm actually enjoying their episodes on that, though my interest in Beckham family feuds and whether Taylor Swift is being unpleasant to some other popstar is minimal. I very much liked recent-ish episodes on the Saudi comedy festival and the mechanics of undercover reporting.

(I'm also interested in why Richard, who was asked to be on Celebrity Traitors, really declined, when he has so many ideas about the best way to play it. I know why he says he declined, but I suspect it was more to do with not looking like an idiot on TV when his ideas don't work in practice.)

CurlewKate · 28/10/2025 15:24

I think they interrupt each other. I also think (and this is not my normal feminist position!) that Marina can more than hold her own. I love hearing their behind the scenes knowledge, and I would LOVE to get them both drunk and indiscreet!

I have never heard of Glen Powell before and am struggling to remember now who he is. I assumed he was a country singer.
