To think being single can be both empowering and sad, at the same time?

I like my independence. I really do. But that doesn’t mean I never feel the weight of it.

Oh yes. Autonomy. Making my own decisions.Choosing whether I stay over with a friend or come home. No-one to answer to. Financially independent. And also a bit scared and a bit wistful and a little envious and wishing I had someone to share those memories with...

I didn't find it sad, personally. Leaving my marriage was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I felt elated after the initial shock subsided and I loved the nine years I had of being a single mum.

I'm now cohabiting with someone again and generally I'm happy but I miss being single a lot. I miss the freedom, not having to worry about someone else's needs, not having to compromise. I love my partner but I look wistfully back at my years of being single.

Looking at a freshly made bed and thinking it’s all yours.
Opening the fridge door and seeing all your favourite food.
Leaving a pile of clothes lying around with no obligation to do anything about it.
A day with Bette Davis films and chocolate and no disturbances
Not having to rush back from a day out with friends
Holiday son your own that are adventures full of possibilities ( and flirting with waiters🙂)
The fantasy of a relationship without the reality of it.
All your money is yours to spend - no accountability to anyone else.
A kind of freedom of the heart - to change your mind and opinion without having to justify anything to someone else.
Friendships and really being able to thrive on the world you have made for yourself and the solidity that gives you.
