To think that far too many politicians seem to act like the rules, especially around sex and conduct, don’t apply to them?

I don’t think every single MP or PM is secretly deviant but the number of scandals, cover-ups and inappropriate behaviour we’ve seen from people in high office is staggering. It’s like once they get power, all the usual boundaries just evaporate.

AIBU to think that politics attracts the kind of person who thinks they can do whatever they want, especially behind closed doors?

I think that is widely acknowledged ditto judges, ceos, surgeons etc.

Locutus2000 · 27/10/2025 12:58

This is going to go well.

PixieandMe · 27/10/2025 13:00

It has always been and will always be the case.

I'm looking forward to the Starmer stuff coming out

BingBongBish · 27/10/2025 13:04

This is like asking if you're unreasonable to think the sky is blue 😳

Me too. It’s a barely kept secret now.

MidnightPatrol · 27/10/2025 13:07

You have to wonder what came first - the sexual deviancy, or is it the power / authority that causes it.

They are astonishingly consistent with it though. That it so often seems to involve something kinky is also… just very bizarre.

Octavia64 · 27/10/2025 13:09

Not just politics.

to be fair most people have broken at least some rules at some point in their life. Some more than others to be fair.

I think that a lot of professions would be similar if there was the level of attention (eg journalists invested in finding stories) and public interest (I mean that both in the sense of “is this in the public interest” and in the sense of the public is interested).

What stuff? Or are you just making a baseless accusation?

Go on, what stuff. Enlighten us. What are you accusing the prime minister of?

No. I so wish that he was man enough to get it on with three Ukrainian male models, but I doubt it. Would be interesting to know what happened though.

They don't.

We have a ruling class. They're often related by family also. Even internationally. Look at Sunak's wife's father's tech company empire in India.

They can buy, lie, argue, PR, and name change their way out of criminal pasts.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 27/10/2025 13:59

What stuff about Starmer?

WildLimePoet · 27/10/2025 13:59

The fact that so many scandals get found out makes you wonder why they think they won’t be caught.

The reason they think that is because they get away with way more than is ever actually exposed. Which tells you how corrupt and incompetent these politicians are.

Proper scrapings off the bottom of the barrel when it comes to calibre, competence and integrity.

1dayatatime · 27/10/2025 23:01

Well voters tend to prefer to vote for politicians that are liars - if they ever told the truth, the voters wouldn't like to hear it and would vote for someone falsely promising cake and eat it.

So if they are comfortable lying about politics then it's a small step to lie about infidelities or corruption.

What’s someone’s sex life got to do with their ability to do their job, though?

Provided nothing illegal’s taken place, who cares if someone’s kinky behind closed doors? It’s nobody else’s business. The entire Cabinet can spend their free time getting done up their arse with a garden gnome for all I care. It’s only sex.

If a politician bangs on about sexual morality and espouses (eg) homophobic rhetoric and policies has no business criticising the sexual behaviour of others if he hangs out in fetish clubs getting fisted by strangers every nighsl. But most politicians make no comment on their own or others’ sex lives.
