DC has reinstated Netflix twice

ShoveItUpYourArseMargaret · 26/10/2025 19:23

I cancelled netflix in Sept due to needing to save money and the quality of what was on offer for kids. We also have Disney so really don't need both.

DD (who has suspected ADHD and breaks many rules) has managed to reinstate it not just once but TWICE. It happened because my Netflix password was saved on the TV.

I have just spoken to them and they have refunded for Oct but not for Sept because the account has been used - yeah, no shit sherlock.

A little bit of googling has revealed that this is a common problem. Aibu in thinking Netflix need to sort this our before thie theivery via kids strategy damages their reputation.

Surely there should be some kind of verification process before a streaming service can be purchased directly through a TV?

Sorry this is 100% your fault. If you know your child is likely to break rules then you need to make it as hard as possible for them to do so. It’s nothing to do with Netflix and all to do with you not closing down the app properly

Moveduty · 27/10/2025 10:52

It's your responsibility to keep finances and logins confidential. Don't let your child have access to things you don't want them to control.

This is in no way to do with netflix regardless of the number of people who post online about not being able to protect their own accounts.

GasPanic · 27/10/2025 10:55

Could you send of the story to the Daily Rage and get £50 for a sad face photo claiming it's all someone else's fault ?

Probably more likely to get your money back.

Goodness...When did Mumsnet become so stupidly sanctimonious?

DC had obviously been told not to reinstate it.

I don't need to justify my reasons for following up and and changing the password /deleting the account but needless to say, it wasn't top of my priorities.

When I have occasionally paid for a film to watch via Amazon, I actually needed to go into my Amazon account to confirm purchase. This kind of system should be standard. Everything else nowadays is checked and double checked, why not Netflix?

Amazon prime is the same you just have to reenter prime and hit ok. It doesnt ask for any varification happened on my tv as toddler was playing with the remote so i removed the card from the app so it cant happen again. As its your tv and account they assume its you

SauceySally · 27/10/2025 11:20

Parent your child, don’t expect Netflix to do it for you.

No5ChalksRoad · 27/10/2025 11:29

Woahtherehoney · 26/10/2025 19:27

Really can’t see how this is the fault of Netflix to be honest!

I know!

Teach your child to obey your rules.

😂

I stand by it - she’s the issue. The type who’d sue the chippy because she ate their food 4 times a week and got fat.

And rightly so! I felt fucking awful all day on Saturday. I am definitely suing the restaurant that sold me wine on Friday night.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 27/10/2025 11:33

I think it's your job to parent your child, not Netflix!

gamerchick · 27/10/2025 11:34

Sorry OP this is a parent problem. I know ADHD is a massive PITA to navigate. Been there and whatnot. You have to be hyper vigilant with their wants. They see them as needs.

Notmyreality · 27/10/2025 11:49

LousyGolfer · 26/10/2025 20:07

No, Netflix isn’t to blame for your poor parenting.

This

harriethoyle · 26/10/2025 19:57

The very epitome of everything that’s wrong with society. Always someone else’s fault rather than yours for failing to adult effectively 🙄

You’ll be accused of ‘victim blaming!!!!’

NannyOggsScones · 27/10/2025 12:01

OP AIBU? Mumsnet - yes! OP what a nasty bunch of bitches, my parenting is perfect.

I imagine most of us on here have streaming services of one sort or another and yet nearly all of us have managed to cancel them and not have a kid reinstate them not once but twice. What bitches we are!

This is due to the settings on you account. I can purchase films on Amazon directly through my TV without having to confirm anything via my Amazon account.

All streaming service have parental controls, and systems for removing payment details. It's not Netflix's fault that you haven't taken the time to learn how to use them before giving your children access.

There are certain movies and shows that are extra on Amazon, doesn’t matter if you have a prime membership or not, while on Netflix everything is included in the subscription price. When you rent on Amazon you are ‘buying’ something new hence asking for payment confirmation, whereas Netflix is just reinstating a contract you had initially signed t&c’s for with your email, password and card. Not their fault you didn’t sign out completely.

Why is it Netflix fault you could not be bothered to change the Netflix password? They also email you when an account is reinstated so if you missed that, that’s on you.

Balloonhearts · 27/10/2025 12:17

It's your account and your child. You are responsible for keeping your account and payment methods secure and you are responsible for disciplining your child and teaching them not to steal. Not seeing how this is Netflix at fault here. Why should they have to make failsafes against poorly supervised children?

Because Netflix has decided this is what works for them and how they want to run things.

This is all on you... lesson learned

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 27/10/2025 12:26

Damages their reputation? 😂

ldnmusic87 · 27/10/2025 12:49

No, you need to do some parenting.

EachandEveryone · 27/10/2025 12:53

What’s ADHD got to do with it?

Achewyhamster · 27/10/2025 12:54

This is up there with parents sad faces when they've not changed passwords on computer games and their kids spend 2k on extras and then they go running to the papers (with sad faces) blaming the computer companies for making it so easy for them to pull this stunt

I even saw one mother get a refund but then whinged because her dc couldn't keep the extras they'd been refunded for!

I'm far from being the perfect mother but mine couldn't have pulled these stunts because I took steps to make sure they couldn't and if they'd somehow managed to get round them, they knew there would be consequences

All this could have been sorted with a basic password change which Netflix give you the option to do!

Livpool · 27/10/2025 13:02

YABU - Netflix want to keep it simple for people
to reinstate their accounts was easily as possible. That is their business model.

MissDoubleU · 27/10/2025 13:04

NellieElephantine · 26/10/2025 21:32

Is this like being angry at Tesco for selling the junk food your dc bought, binged on, then vommed?

“My children have my bank card and pin number saved. They bought junk food using my card. How could NatWest allow this!?”

OP, it’s your responsibility to maintain your account including passwords and where those passwords are pre-saved.

Scarlettpixie · 27/10/2025 13:04

Sorry but this is on you not Netflix.

All the streaming services work in a similar way. My son and I wanted to watch a film the other night so decided to resubscribe to Now TV. It was a toss up between a one off payment to Prime to buy the film or a month of Now TV Cinema. All the details are saved in the TV for both. We were sorted in a couple of clicks which was great. We were just sitting down to eat and I like that I don't have to faff about remembering passwords of looking for a bank card!
