DC has reinstated Netflix twice

ShoveItUpYourArseMargaret · 26/10/2025 19:23

I cancelled netflix in Sept due to needing to save money and the quality of what was on offer for kids. We also have Disney so really don't need both.

DD (who has suspected ADHD and breaks many rules) has managed to reinstate it not just once but TWICE. It happened because my Netflix password was saved on the TV.

I have just spoken to them and they have refunded for Oct but not for Sept because the account has been used - yeah, no shit sherlock.

A little bit of googling has revealed that this is a common problem. Aibu in thinking Netflix need to sort this our before thie theivery via kids strategy damages their reputation.

Surely there should be some kind of verification process before a streaming service can be purchased directly through a TV?

and stop blaming ADHD on your badly behaved child!! Poor parenting is the cause usually

harriethoyle · 26/10/2025 19:57

The very epitome of everything that’s wrong with society. Always someone else’s fault rather than yours for failing to adult effectively 🙄

Yep!
To paraphrase Lady Bracknell; one is unfortunate, twice is careless.

PucaBandearg · 26/10/2025 20:52

LousyGolfer · 26/10/2025 20:07

No, Netflix isn’t to blame for your poor parenting.

Sorry @LousyGolfer I didn't quite hear you 🤪

(Joking! I saw your update)

What a truly nasty response. After parenting two practiaclly perfect DC, I can 100% confirm that there is nothing wrong with my parenting skills.

Goodness...When did Mumsnet become so stupidly sanctimonious?

DC had obviously been told not to reinstate it.

I don't need to justify my reasons for following up and and changing the password /deleting the account but needless to say, it wasn't top of my priorities.

When I have occasionally paid for a film to watch via Amazon, I actually needed to go into my Amazon account to confirm purchase. This kind of system should be standard. Everything else nowadays is checked and double checked, why not Netflix?

How on earth is it thievery via kids?! You’re the person who left your child able to use your password, didn’t remove the payment method and allowed it to happen twice. You’re the one who’s responsible for your child, ADHD or not. Exactly what are Netflix supposed to do to prevent it that you, while parenting your child, can’t?

Assuming your child knew they were wrong and breaking the rules I’d call it thievery by your kid rather than by Netflix via them.

CryMyEyesViolet · 26/10/2025 21:25

There literally is a verification process. It’s the password to the account.

I imagine most people sign out after use and keep their password private to prevent others using it.

I know when we recently went on a caravan holiday I logged into our Netflix account and made sure I logged out before we left.

Verification is having the password…

Is this like being angry at Tesco for selling the junk food your dc bought, binged on, then vommed?

PucaBandearg · 26/10/2025 21:33

You'd be surprised how many people don't log out again in holiday locations @BingBongBish - earlier this year we watched Titanic on someone's account in Spain (changed language from French to English) and started Schitt's Creek on someone else's account (can't remember where we were) - so they'll have that on their continue watching 😆

BingBongBish · 26/10/2025 21:35

@PucaBandearg 🤣🤣🤣

1offnamechange · 26/10/2025 21:54

would you blame netflix if someone had stolen your phone and your password had been on there?

Your son fraudulently used your details to, essentially, impersonate you by using your card without permission. That is a parenting issue not a security one. Of course your son being a little thief isn't for netflix to solve, nor is it damaging their reputation, because most people reading this are judging him, not netflix!
It's decent of them to have refunded you one month, tbh, given it's nearly the end of October!

How much even is it? Depending on your package, 1 month is between £6-14 quid. Take that out of DS's pocket money or off the money you were going to spend on him for Christmas if the money means that much to you.

Your child disobeyed you not once but twice. You didn't put the appropriate restrictions in place not once, but twice. You blamed Netflix for your child's behaviour and your lack of common sense. This is clearly not world ending levels of bad behaviour or parenting but claiming your parenting skills are 100% after starting this thread is not your wisest move.

Autumvibes · 26/10/2025 22:14

You can have profile pins on Netflix can’t you?

Shessweetbutapsycho · 26/10/2025 22:16

What’s the saying… fool me once shame on you…?
You really should have taken measures to prevent it happening after the first time, the fact it happened again is on you I’m afraid

TheSmallAssassin · 26/10/2025 22:17

I don't think you can blame Netflix. Take the money you are owed out of your daughter's pocket money.

TalulahJP · 26/10/2025 22:28

Yup there have to be consequences for actions. Pocket money has to be raided.

Keep an eye on your bank to see if dc have gotten hold of your card and taken out any other accounts (prime Apple TV etc)

JudgeBread · 26/10/2025 22:32

Oh come on, it's not Netflix's fault. They were good to refund you one month, you shouldn't have had any money back.

You can put a lock on your TV to prevent your child from using it. It's called taking the batteries out of the remote like everyone else does.

Kibble19 · 26/10/2025 22:38

Your shit parenting is the issue here. Your child thought it was ok to do this twice - I’d bet anything that there were zero consequences after the first time.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 26/10/2025 22:39

There’s no way you can blame this on Netflix. You should be able to trust your child to not reinstate it when they’ve been specifically told not to. Once they’d done it once, the sensible thing would have been to change the password then. YABU to try to assign blame anywhere other than your family. It is very much your child’s fault. At a push you could take some of the blame yourself if your kid has PDA or something. But there’s no way this is Netflix’s fault.

🤣🤣🤣 I thought I'd been harsh on the OP but I feel quite tame now.

mmsnet · 26/10/2025 23:48

I stand by it - she’s the issue. The type who’d sue the chippy because she ate their food 4 times a week and got fat.
