To Think My Puffer Coat Is Making Me Depressed

I hate puffer** coats. I hate them so much. The shape, the texture, the dull colours. It might be shallow, but I find nice clothes an easy way to boost my mood. I like colour, surprising combinations, interesting shapes... However, various lifestyle changes mean I'm outside much more than I used to be, so a couple of years ago I caved and bought one from Uniqlo. It works. It keeps me both dry and warm. As all the marketing promises, I do indeed feel like I am wearing my duvet - which I admit can be quite nice.

But now the weather has turned, the thought of putting it on is making me so sad! I can't rot away in this slug-like thing from now until March.

Has anyone found a decent knee length one with a hood in a colour other than black, grey, khaki, navy, sludge brown or beige? I would love electric blue or bright green, or - god forbid - even a pattern. Does such a thing exist? I'm wiling to pay for it. Cheaper than therapy.

** I hate it even more when people spell it "puffa coat"

@ProcrastinatorsAnonymous the orla keily pattern ones are quite funky and non slug like. I think regatta sell them.

Two patterned options for you:
The Nova Scotia coat from Gudrun Sjoden.
Would a changing robe do the job? Regatta has a few designed by Orla Kiely

I have one of these in a different pattern and I ADORE it. So warm & looks good with my usual gear- jeans, boots, dungarees, chunky jumpers.

Thanks for the suggestion whoever it was, I've just fallen in love with these amazing sittingsuits

I look like the Michelin Man's auntie in a puffer coat which is a shame as they're really warm and cosy.

I hate all rainwear. I hate the noise the make, the feel of them, their ‘functionality’ at the expense of interest or fashion, and their sheer unattractiveness. I have one of those big Joules yellow fisherman coat things for emergencies and the last time a wore it, a homeless guy, a guy who literally lived in a shop doorway, sneered ‘nice coat’ and then LAUGHED. I am generous of nork so a proper puffer coat makes me look like the over inflated offspring of Phil Mitchell and the Michelin Man. No solutions I’m afraid. Just solidarity 🤜🤛

Haha... well last winter I was wearing my puffa in waitrose and it was just before christmas, I had several nice items I had selected for the food bank collection and was placing then gently into the basket thing they collect them in, when an elderly couple accosted me and started shouting at me for stealing from the food bank 😂as apparently I looked like the 'type'.
The only visible clothing was my big puffa, so combined with my windswept hair and old trainers I obviously looked like a theif who would steal from the poor.
I then upgraded my puffa to a Barbour puffa and thought a nice dusky pink would be a nice upgrade. However, in this new puffa people keep offering to pay for my food, this has happened three times in the past year, where nice citizens have offered to pay for my shopping when I am digging around in my giant pockets for my phone to pay😂
I clearly just look like a tramp when I am wearing one. Dh says I look like a homeless bag lady wearing it and has been putting money aside to buy me a new coat for xmas as I have refused to buy myself one due to how much the barbour cost.

I loathe puffa jackets. I have a parka, actually it’s from Whistles and it’s 15 years old. If I had to replace it, I’d get another parka from Decathlon. No furry hood.

Can i ask - what do you all do about washing them ?!? I've tried and the stuffing all just balls up.

I too hate puffer coats. I wear one when we get actual snow. My adult daughter has one which she tried washing last year with a tennis ball in the machine but it didn't work.

If it’s down it needs to be washed with either soap flakes or a specialist down cleaner, otherwise the feathers will clump. They need to be tumble dried with tennis balls rather than washed, this breaks up any clumps that have formed during washing.

Have you looked at Ski jackets? I personally find them a lot better, equally warm, more decent pockets and often bright colours. Waterproof, windproof but a shorter lenght.

Look at Regatta or Go Outdoors.

It’s not even puffer coat weather. The problem is you’re wearing it too soon, keep it for Dec-Feb.

You need a Sitting Suit: https://sittingsuits.co.uk/pages/all

Oh my goodness - I have never heard of these! Have you worn one? Are they good? Thank you!

I got a fabulous new with tags one from Vinted for £40. Its Rino & Pelle and its bright blue. I was excited putting it on today, felt like a brightly coloured snuggly duvet.

Not finished reading the full thread, but reading your comment about it being the only type of coat to keel you warm on the school cycle made me remember an advert I saw - Oodie are now making coats too. If they’re even half as warm as the oodie’s are, I bet they’ll be perfect. Sounds like they’ll have. Waterproof side and I think they’re reversible so you can have the gorgeous patterns! I’ll try to find a link.

Puffalicious · 26/10/2025 20:06

I have:

LandsEnd Puffa - warm but I feel frumpy in it.

Seasalt- TWO waterproof coats: one very long & very warm; one parka style. Like both.

Mountain Warehouse HUGE Puffer- love the shape & it's long & warm, but it is black (work coat).

Orla Keily at Regatta change robe - by far my favourite. Super waterproof, very warm & fits all clothes underneath. I've had & continue to have SO many compliments & asking where I got it- a doctor last year said it must make me smile all day, and it does. Beware, it's very much a marmite coat- my sister hates it & I've had a couple of 'Won't miss you in that' comments, but I don't give a shite.

Scotland, therefore why I have so many coats. I've not even listed the jackets...😃

I saw these & was very tempted! But I would be shameless, as I have more than enough coats. I think I have a coat obsession😅

SevenYellowHammers · 26/10/2025 20:14

Puffa is a brand, mainly equestrian stuff

TwistedKeys · 26/10/2025 20:17

I have a Desigual puffer coat in black but with a rather out there print. It always gets compliments. But I never loved it because it’s a puffer jacket. This year, I bought a navy Didrikson parka on Vinted. It felt quite pricey for a second hand coat but it is fab. So warm, and properly waterproof. And even if it’s more muted than the puffer, I feel so sleek in it. Worth every penny.

AliceMaforethought · 26/10/2025 20:17

I loathe puffer coats, they are vile. I wear faux fur or sheepskin instead. Would that be an option for you?

SocksPechora · 26/10/2025 20:18

Not sure about these green ones people are recommending, you’ll look like the very hungry caterpillar.
