To Think My Puffer Coat Is Making Me Depressed

I hate puffer** coats. I hate them so much. The shape, the texture, the dull colours. It might be shallow, but I find nice clothes an easy way to boost my mood. I like colour, surprising combinations, interesting shapes... However, various lifestyle changes mean I'm outside much more than I used to be, so a couple of years ago I caved and bought one from Uniqlo. It works. It keeps me both dry and warm. As all the marketing promises, I do indeed feel like I am wearing my duvet - which I admit can be quite nice.

But now the weather has turned, the thought of putting it on is making me so sad! I can't rot away in this slug-like thing from now until March.

Has anyone found a decent knee length one with a hood in a colour other than black, grey, khaki, navy, sludge brown or beige? I would love electric blue or bright green, or - god forbid - even a pattern. Does such a thing exist? I'm wiling to pay for it. Cheaper than therapy.

** I hate it even more when people spell it "puffa coat"

They are the worst coats ever. The absolute pits. The most ubiquitous ugly garment in can think of. Actually scrub that, the ones without sleeves are even more abysmal. Now they really are bad.

I bought a bright red one, that comes below my knees from Superdry. I love it. I got it about 3yrs ago, but this style is very very similar:

Down coats are not objects of great beauty but I love mine for keeping me warm.

But if there’s anything worse than a puffa, it’s a puffa in a bright colour. I can’t imagine anything worse, personally.

Mine is goose down and I don’t like the polyester filled ones, nonetheless, this one is quite nice:

Try dryrobes

also Desigual has coats in wild colours usually

Holluschickie · 26/10/2025 20:58

I feel you. I hate my navy LandsEnd/ Uniqlo puffers but it suits my lifestyle because I walk everywhere and don't run a car. But I think it would be even uglier in a bright colour. I wear bright scarves to cheer me up.

Wool coats don't work for me because I don't like brollies. And I don't like to wear too many layers as I get too hot. Puffer it is from Dec to March.

Puffer coats make me irrationally angry. They are an abomination.

Totally this. They’re just horrible.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 26/10/2025 21:03

Right you need a coat that makes you happy.

there was a thread on here ages ago that had stylish cycling rain coats, looked like traditional Mac’s in a range of styles/colours but designed for being on a bike. One of those with a Uniqlo ultra light down jacket underneath (while a mini puffer jacket, not the full thing, just a layer for warmth!) would be more joyful.

Im struggling to find the company now, perhaps start a style and beauty thread asking for stylish coats for on a bike and see what suggestions you get?!

MrsHero · 26/10/2025 21:15

Urgh, I have a diamond quilted uniqlo one which is about a decade old and just so reliably warm... but in desperate need of replacement! But the current horizontal lined ones are so unflattering and I really do hate a black coat. So no suggestions, only commiserations.

BustPipes · 26/10/2025 21:16

Personally, I embrace slug life. Mine (replacement for last year's - black, same as last year's - but longer, warmer, sluggier) keeps my knees super toasty. Plus, occasionally I put the hood up, and shuffle/worm up to my partner, saying, in my sexiest voice "Slug wants snugs. You want snug slugs, yes? Yeeeeeeeees?"
Works every time.

Same OP - I got a nice khaki and navy one with a leopard print pocket detail from Boden. They have a few nice puffer/winter coats with a pop of colour.

That's actually pretty nice and versatile too.

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 26/10/2025 21:24

Superdry does lots of bright colours and the coats are very very warm e.g. www.superdry.com/womens/jackets/ripstop-longline-puffer-coat-258999.html

I wouldn't be seen dead in a puffer coat, they are not a necessity, other coats that keep you warm are available.
I honestly can't understand why anyone would wear an item of clothing that makes them feel depressed....bin the bloody thing, or better still, give it away to charity, at least some good will have come from it.

Agree but what coat do you wear? I need a new one this year.

I agree the horizontally lined ones are super unflattering. Look at Didriksons or Marmot.

JadedSoJaded · 26/10/2025 21:25

Marmot, Rab or any of the high end Scandi brands. All proper down. All £££. The higher quality, the less bulk. My long Marmot is 15 years old & now relegated to dog walking/gardening. I have no idea how I coped in Arctic Scotland until I acquired it. So warm, and windproof, with giant hood. You get to the point where substance wins over style!!

Holluschickie · 26/10/2025 21:31

Having looked at all the coats on this thread, I am now craving a Didrikson's Alana parka. They look so sleek and elegant.

MaurineWayBack · 26/10/2025 21:31

If you’re after long, floaty, warm coat, Oodies should do it.

I have one, it’s very warm (I’d say maybe too warm if you’re cycling?), plenty of space for movement. Unfortunately not as much choice colour wise than 2 years year when I bought mine. But still some.

I’ve just bought a burgundy velvet puffa (yes and I say hoover too!) coat. It’s only waist length though. I can’t get on board with the sleeping bag variety.

Agapornis · 26/10/2025 21:33

Another vote for Didriksons. Warm, various lengths, usually 1-2 bright colours per design, not puffa still very warm. Properly waterproof. I live down south and usually only wear a t-shirt underneath 😅
I have a Frida in an icy blue, it also comes in bright red.

There's a 25% sale on Boden at the moment too as it can be pricey. 🎉

Gowlett · 26/10/2025 21:45

Hate them… I was given a posh one, but I can’t.

Saw a lady, yesterday, in a gorgeous teal wool coat.

Yes, not great in the rain. But her herringbone grey scarf.
And her chestnut boots, and beautiful handbag. Bravo!
