To Think My Puffer Coat Is Making Me Depressed

I hate puffer** coats. I hate them so much. The shape, the texture, the dull colours. It might be shallow, but I find nice clothes an easy way to boost my mood. I like colour, surprising combinations, interesting shapes... However, various lifestyle changes mean I'm outside much more than I used to be, so a couple of years ago I caved and bought one from Uniqlo. It works. It keeps me both dry and warm. As all the marketing promises, I do indeed feel like I am wearing my duvet - which I admit can be quite nice.

But now the weather has turned, the thought of putting it on is making me so sad! I can't rot away in this slug-like thing from now until March.

Has anyone found a decent knee length one with a hood in a colour other than black, grey, khaki, navy, sludge brown or beige? I would love electric blue or bright green, or - god forbid - even a pattern. Does such a thing exist? I'm wiling to pay for it. Cheaper than therapy.

** I hate it even more when people spell it "puffa coat"

I bought myself a Superdry Fuji long length coat ( took the hood off as I'm not a fur fan) mainly because it has narrow sewed channels for the filling and that filling is recycled plastic not feather or down (which I don;t wear )
I wore it last year in Bruges & Amsterdam in December ( cold) and every other middle aged woman like me was wearing one so it felt quite comforting .

They do have some in bright colours , depends if you;d wear Superdry though .

I would look like Hayley Cropper from Corrie in a red coat though .

Omg same. I have had mine in every day for a month now and I feel so dowdy.
I saw a lovely faux fur coat in hobbs the other say and thought.. shall I.... can I 😂
The reality is I have boys and am often hauling muddy equipment in and out of the car and it would be a wreck in a short time.
I might still buy it though!!

Ah but you can chuck it in the washing machine. Dries fast too.

Fairydustand · 26/10/2025 19:09

That's actually nice

musicmum75 · 26/10/2025 19:11

Roman Originals has lots of brightly coloured puffer jackets.

I like the Stella Mcartney x Adidas puffer jackets but they’re probably too short for you.

I don’t wear a puffer, but if I was going to, I’d probably go for the pink M&S one from the children’s section a previous pp suggested

or this cool northface longline in this silvery colour and wear a colourful wooly hat as you could wear any bright color with this. Very versatile imo.

@Libertysparkle - sold- I’m buying it !!

Worriedalltheday · 26/10/2025 19:17

If you’re willing to spend then buy a Moncler or Canada Goose. I know MN hates them but they feel amazing and warm to wear. A black is a rich color of black, they have shape and structure to them. It’s the cheap ones that look like duvets or sacks that’s depressing.

I would've agreed with you wholeheartedly until we moved house and our school run became a school cycle. Through biting wind that rips through every other type of coat I've tried. And freezing rain. And hail. Kids are toasty under the cargo bike cover. I'm the schmuck freezing my tits off in the saddle - so practicality had to win, and it turns out that dressing yourself in an abominable duvet is actually really warm. Albeit depressing.

Well then, if no one can help you on here, I think the only answer is therapy.😜

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 26/10/2025 19:18

V grateful to the OP for articulating something I didn't even know I was suffering from: puffer-coat induced depression.

I haven't got one myself but I now realise that just seeing other people wearing them makes me feel drab and bleak, especially the long ones down to the knees.

Never felt the need for one myself. I just wear a long-sleeved vest, 17 jumpers, a fleece, and a lightweight coat on top.

Echlefecker · 26/10/2025 19:18

I love didricksons..I've never been warmer. I have a 4 year old purple puffer from them. The cuffs are amazing. It's so cozy. My husband calls it my football.managers coat.
If I was getting another one now I'd go for this Parker

Haven’t read full thread but Lighthouse Clothing coats are great and come in some better colours.

LongOutBreath · 26/10/2025 19:19

It's the shape imo. The only one I've ever liked is my friend 's which is electric blue and a big, soft floppy shape. Far more akin to a duvet slung about the shoulders. I hate close fitting column ones. Even worse with a cinched waist.

This sounds like exactly what I'm looking for - any idea where she found it?

I feel the same OP. There was a time when I wouldn't have dreamt of wearing a down jacket. I was all about the tailored wool coats.
Then I got older and colder and started coveting super warm, practical coats. I now own 2 short down jackets and one enormous, long Didriksons duvet coat.
I love the warmth and practicality but I also feel a bit depressed by them. They don't lift my spirits like my beautiful old red, wool coat or my belted blue wool coat.

Pleasehelpmedress · 26/10/2025 19:26

Not sure if they've already been mentioned but have you considered Didrikson jackets? I've had mine ten years now (and worn a lot - live in West Scotland and always outdoors) and it's still in brilliant condition. Half the village seem to have these for their "smart" coats - though that's just smart for people usually covered in mud.

Technical question, is a quilted coat the same as a puffer? Or is it less warm because it's less, well, puffy?

The faux fur or the puffa?

NellyWest · 26/10/2025 19:30

My leopard print Barbour puffer brings me both joy and warmth!

OhMaria2 · 26/10/2025 18:44

Are big faux fur coats still a thing? I looked like a honey monster in my grey one but it was ( slightly)less depressing than my puffer jacket

This is what I posted about in an earlier post. I havent had one for 20 years but I saw this week some beautiful ones in Hobbs.

Soddingcat · 26/10/2025 19:32

I have the green and orange Uniqlo one ! I adore it !
