Chemist doesn't sell loo roll

Today I went for a walk with my dog , on the way back I realised I needed to get paracetamol and toilet rolls and rather than drive somewhere I walked back home via the chemist.

I asked the owner and his wife where the toilet rolls were and they said they don't sell it.
I was rather shocked as the chemist had toothpaste , shampoo, pile cream, Imodium , bubble bath etc etc.

" A chemist without toilet rolls how bizarre" , I said in a loud voice.
" Come on Leonard , we are off ," I said to the dog ( As in Catherine Tate ) .
Am I being unreasonable?

Assuming he’s not an Andrex puppy, Leonard probably doesn’t use loo roll.

Perhaps chemists used to stock Izal medicated loo roll back in the day?Confused

I imagined Leonard would have a bit of empathy with his owner once he's overcome second hand embarrassment.

No - not the tracing paper. The Andrex two pack, paper wrapper in lovely early 90s colours like peach, mint green and pale blue.

There are at least three chemists in our local high street. One is a large chain store that has a really good range of household cleaning products, I don’t know if they have loo roll but I would think they might do. The other two are just regular small chemists and I wouldn’t expect them to sell loo roll.

Never seen it in a Boots

They used to but they don't now.
I'm not sure when they stopped.

I have seen loo roll in a chemist's.

I was a child and the only loo roll in the chemists was that horrible tracing paper stuff that schools used to use.

Salvadoridory · 28/10/2025 05:23

They should really, seeing as it might be needed urgently along with immodium. They did used to sell that crackly paper medicated type

I’m 46 and can’t ever remember seeing it so maybe they stopped like 30+ years ago I guess.

magicalmadmadamim · 28/10/2025 07:06

I don't think ive ever associated loo roll with the chemists!

I don’t know how or why people don’t agree with you OP but a chemist/ pharmacy (is there a difference…?) is somewhere I’d expect to find toilet paper. My local chemist when I was growing up had a selection of household things including toilet paper, toilet bleach, cleaning products, cling film. But now that I come to think of it, my current local chemist does not. I do find it strange though - it is a very basic medical / hygiene requirement and so it makes sense to find it at the chemist, along with sanitary products,,hand soap, plasters, etc.

I did a screenshot of some upthread. They definitely sold it.
They used to (might still do?) sell regular household cleaning stuff like washing up liquid as well.
Edit : I just looked on their website. They have laundry liquid and fabric conditioner so they still sell that.

Pharmacies have changed a lot, partly to do with becoming more clinical. Pharmacy first is heavily advertised, and they do a lot of service that you used to only get from GPs. Also due to competition from supermarkets who can sell toiletries and sanitary products at a much lower price than a community pharmacy can, due to their bulk buying power.

If you are using Immodium regularly then if you haven't already, you should be having a serious conversation with your GP.

If you have IBS-D there isn't really much they can do.

weirdoboelady · 28/10/2025 22:27

Weird jobs I have had.

I do hope this isn't confidential. Towards the end of the lockdown period there was national panic about shortages, so a large organisation was commissioned to do a weekly audit of a list of essentials to see whether they were in stock, and what the prices were like. TP was on this list, of course.

I am therefore in a position to confirm

  1. Harrods has a pharmacy (in the LG floor, at the end furthest from the tube).
  2. They do not sell TP.

Ours randomly sells kitchen rolls!

AgentPidge · 28/10/2025 22:37

I tried to buy a thermometer in our local Boots but they don't sell them! So they have all sorts of fancy stuff but not the basics you'd expect in a chemists. OTOH, our local newsagents sells loo roll!

There's 28 different thermometers on Boots website.
I have a feeling a lot of products like that they would rather people order online for either click n collect or home delivery because if they have them in store they get stolen.
