To ask what you would do with dark brown salt and pepper hair?

I have very dark brown hair with a lot of grey/white hairs and although I don’t like how it is, I’m not sure if I have the confidence to do anything about it.
I can’t afford salon so if I do anything I would just do home box colour.
So do I go lighter or darker? I did try a blonde wash out thinking it might just work on the grey but it didn’t work. I don’t want the dark to go orange and I don’t want very dark hair either because it doesn’t look good on me.
I think this is why I leave well alone but it is getting greyer and now the summer tan has gone I look quite washed out.
What do most people do with dark brown hair thats going grey?
I’m early 40s.

I've been complimented loads on this, even told it looks distinguished. Of course it doesn't look young, but it can look very sophisticated.

I’m now mid 40s but this started for me early 40s too with dark brown hair and I decided I wanted to be brown for a bit longer! I use L’Oréal castings medium brown every 6 weeks, at 6 weeks the salt and pepper at my roots are peaking through, and I’m really happy with it. My hair is shiny and in good condition. I love the conditioner they supply too. I use tigi colour goddess shampoo to maintain the colour which seems to be effective.
