This Christmas?
I know it’s mainly a cost thing but if it’s achievable, can people possibly manage with less stuff?

I don't have an MN salary. I am on minimum wage zero hours contract. I have every sympathy with people on the bones of their arse, and if it's people buying coats and shoes for their kids they otherwise wouldn't have, yes, I get that.

But realistically, it mostly isn't. It's people buying tat they don't need, clothes they'll only wear once, etc. Everybody I know who buys from Temu spends more on clothes on n a month than I have in a year. And these aren't even people with dependent children.

I'm not buying the fancy, organic, hand woven version, I'm just not buying stuff. I find it quite sad that the 'joy' in people's lives is so invested in 'stuff'.

For many, these sites are an addiction, not a necessity. It's not the kids warm coats and shoes that bother me. It's the adult need for a new outfit every week/month. It's the 14 different duvet sets for one bed. It's the new stuff because you are bored with the old stuff.

It's wanting to live like a millionaire on a pauper's wages and these weird modern ideas we have got that that is somehow a right. Heaven forfend anyone should have to cut their cloth, the cloth should just be so much cheaper, because the right to have stuff, to be denied nothing, supercedes everything else.

The people who I know are buying from these outlets are doing so because they get more for their money and they don't throw anything away after one wear.... Otherwise it doesn't work out for them 🤷🏼‍♀️

BrendaSmall · 28/10/2025 09:59

My daughters love the clothes from Shein,
I’ve not ordered from Temu recently as they been using Royal Mail and parcels have been arriving 2/3 days later than stated, Temu will give you £4 for a late delivery and also if the prices of things you’ve bought goes down in price they will also refund you the difference!
Ive got £34.87 in credit now due to this!

my Christmas shopping is now finished so I won’t be ordering anything else for the time being!

Because I want to.

Money isn't 'really, really tight' if you can buy non essentials because you 'want to'.

I consider presents for Xmas for my family to be essentials.

Is it because they are from china?

I would hazard a guess it's because that it's more likely that the products are made in sweatshops and with slave labour.

But gifts are not essential; lovely, but not essential.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 28/10/2025 14:14

@venus7
I’m guessing you haven’t read the full thread, but that particular poster has put up with enough posters haranguing her due to her shopping choices, made because she is skint and wants to clothe herself plus do something nice for her family. It’s not fair that everyone is keeping on at her. The problem really is with those who could afford to shop elsewhere but like having multiple new outfits. Life is hard enough for many people at the moment as it is, without having to constantly defend their choices .

Omg really??? Neither is this phone I am using but come on now, are we really going as far to say no more Christmas presents for our loved ones ? You are delusional if you think that anyone is going to take this message seriously with that .
Fwiw I hate fast fashion and temu hauls etc.

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 28/10/2025 14:45

I[d agree that gifts are essential but that doesn[t mean they need to be new purchases. They can come in other forms - home made, recycled, experiences, time.

I didn't say no presents; I said....in response to pp saying she could afford only necessities, and that she buys next month's landfill because she 'wants to'..........that gifts were not.

MummytoE · 28/10/2025 18:26

I will definitely be trying to buy less all round tbh and be more conscious about where my money goes

They aren't though. Essential things are water, food, heating, a roof over heads. Gifts are an extra.

Fair enough, we will have to disagree on that.

Manyredpoppies · 28/10/2025 19:08

I really hope that buying shite in Shein and Temu will heavely taxed in the very near future for all the reasons pointed before by pp.

For those who say they buy in Shein and Temu because that's all they can afford I would ask them: are you actually happy having so much stuff?

Those platforms are for compulsive buying and not because you can't afford it. I simply don't buy what I don't need. Houses get cluttered. Everyone hates clutter. Shein and Temu exist to feed the addiction, just purely for having stuff, the more stuff the better.

We are the first generation who feel entitled to buy, accumulate and dump. But we can't afford that. Climate change is now happening. As we can't expect everyone to understand the consequences of it, I do hope taxing this stuff will stop people from using those platforms for good.

I just wanted to thank you for starting this thread. I had no idea about all the toxins and chemicals in the children’s clothing and I recently bought my daughter lots of clothing and clothing for her dolls. They’re going straight back. It’s just not worth the risk. Thank you.

Edited

I’ll say it again.

We do NOT have lots of stuff. Apart from stocking fillers we use it for essentials. A tape measure, wellies for my husband. Period pants for me. Screwdrivers. A hairbrush. Things like that.

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 28/10/2025 19:57

fucksake why are we shipping individual hairbrushes halfway around the world? How is that in any way sustainable in a time of climate crisis?

100 per cent agree and I would add, how is it possible any of those items arrive at our door all the way from another continent for 5 euros/ 4 euros whatever? Does this bother people at all?

Yeap. Air freight is so much worse than containers on a cargo ship!

Well, I have explained my reasoning so much on this thread.
How I wish I had the finances to shop local but I don’t.

Yes, you have. But I just don't agree that flying a hairbrush China is reasonable or necessary. Hairbrushes that were shipped in bulk are a couple of quid in supermarkets, Boots etc.
Air freight is about 30x worse than sea.

But I just tagged it on my order. I only shop online so cannot go to a supermarket. But point taken. I only order about twice a year so I’ll hear it in mind.

It's a yes from me.
But I try to boycott everything from China. They have an APPALLING record on human rights. And even worse on animal rights. Disgusting, disgraceful country.
