Has sent me down a variety of goat tracks, closed roads and circuitous routes, presumably with the intention of shaving 30 seconds off vs a much easier route.
Aibu to think that there should be settings to stop this? If there are, tell me where? The car builtin sat nav is just the same

Have you inadvertently set it to avoid major roads and motorways?

Motomum23 · 25/10/2025 09:40

Go to settings - then navigation - make sure you don't have avoid motorways and tolls toggled on and put unpaved roads on never allow. Should help a fair bit. Sounds like Sat nav 10 years ago but I don't notice things like that now.

Check you aren't in goat mode. You can usually figure out when it's sending you down a tiny track and just not make the turning.

thisdarncyst · 25/10/2025 10:03

Waze is annoying, even with settings it doesn’t always notify of road closures. Just use google maps

Emiliana52 · 25/10/2025 11:07

I always click on Routes!

Elbowpatch · 25/10/2025 11:13

Have you got avoid unpaved roads turned on?

nhsmanagersanonymous · 25/10/2025 12:20

I find you have to tell it to be more serious, ignore the stupid turns and it sorts its life out

Jannergirl · 25/10/2025 12:23

Mine is the same - unfortunately there’s nothing in settings to select ‘only decent roads and nothing with grass in the middle of the track’ 😵‍💫 You can look at alternative routes but it doesn’t always help if you don’t know the area. I have unpaved roads on never allow so goodness only knows what I’d end up with otherwise. But….. remember when we didn’t have Sat nav’s and had to rely on maps, road signs and post it notes 😱

Love the adventures Waze sends me on! (Sorry not helpful)

beeeeeeez · 25/10/2025 16:10

I used to love Waze but now it overheats so often I'm back to Google Maps, which absolutely sends you over mountain tracks and along D-roads to shave 2 minutes off a 3-hour journey. Then overheats.

Best scenario I had was Google Maps offline when I was navigating New Zealand on my own (both Islands, so a lot of navigation without a lot of available data!) It won't respond in real time, but will get you there by a sensible route. Check with data on at start of journey, then turn it off.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 25/10/2025 16:12

I always check the routes (also while driving). It defaults to quickest journey, but lots of back roads aren’t worth it to save 2 minutes
