So apparently I’m obese according to the NHS website. I definitely have a belly but I don’t feel obese! What do you think? I’m worried I’m deluded!

Honestly Body roundness!!!

Its always been the case that you can tell a lot from your waist/height ratio, that is not new and very helpful, but unless you're a rugby player, professional weight lifter or ballet dancer, your BMI will also be indicative of your weight problems

My BRI apparently is 'excellent'. I highly dispute that. Im right on the cusp of overweight, my BMI is 25. I need to lose about half a stone really to be more comfortable but more healthy, as I get older I can really tell when the pounds are hanging around.

Crocks of shit wont change reality.

Jacopo · 23/10/2025 22:47

Not obese but definitely overweight. If you were a stone lighter you’d feel a lot fitter. How do you get on with climbing stairs, running for a bus etc? A bit breathless?

AmusedOpalShaker · 23/10/2025 22:48

Whoever has told you that you’re obese on the BMI calc is incorrect. You are in the overweight category.

@letmehaveathink , no you don’t look like my vision of obese at all. With gentleness I would say I think we’ve become accustomed to seeing overweight people so much that we’ve become desensitised to it.
I have over the last year gone from a BMI of 35 to 22 (with the help of Mounjaro). Initially I confess my weight loss was all about my body image but over time it’s become absolutely about my health. I would urge you to think about your future health and how your attitude to health and fitness may influence the health and fitness of those you love. Xx

pumpkinscake · 23/10/2025 22:50

No definitely not obese! Ignore the obsessives on here who say you might, as they have their own body issues I'd say.

Mere1 · 23/10/2025 22:50

Bobbedhairdontcare · 23/10/2025 21:46

Absolutely not.

You look overweight. Not obese.

Thanks to whoever mentioned the BRI. According to that, I’m healthy, despite the fact my BMI says I’m overweight. I’ve always suspected as much.

I also find the BRI too blunt. I am a healthy weight by BMI but more relevant in my eyes, I am quite clearly a healthy weight just to look at. To be healthy by BRI standards I would have to be sickeningly underweight by any obvious measures. It doesn’t take into account that I have to buy leg lengths at a height category taller than I am, or that I struggle to wear one piece swimsuits because they’re all too long so I am stuck with bikinis or bloody awful tankini things. It doesn’t see that there’s no such thing as hipster or low waist trousers for me because they all come up to my waist, regular waist trousers have the Simon Cowell effect and high waisted cover my boobs. No such thing as a crop top for me either, my torso is just too short for that. It doesn’t notice that I have the shoulder width of an American footballer. It’s hard to have a small waist measurement when the bottom of your ribs ribs against your hip bones, even when you’re not carrying any weight around there.

I know this isn’t everyone but I also know I’m not that unusual in not conforming to what these standards claim is average 🤷‍♀️.

You look overweight. Not obese.

That's because she is - miscalculated.

Mich1986 · 23/10/2025 22:55

No you don’t! Hate the bmi calculator

letmehaveathink · 23/10/2025 21:47

I’m 5ft 3 and 11 stone 4 pounds. I know I’m a bit heavy, but fuck me, obese seems harsh! But I don’t know if I’m deluded

Most people don't really understand what obese looks like. They picture people who are morbidly obese.

But yes, at that height it doesn't take an awful lot to tip you over from overweight to the obese category.

Seacatt · 23/10/2025 22:57

I am overweight according to the BMI calculator,
but obese according to the BRI calculator.
It is my waist measurement.
'According to the NHS, an unhealthy waist circumference measures 37in (94cm) or above for men and 31.5in (80cm) or above for women.'

Leftleg · 23/10/2025 22:57

You must have entered some incorrect details as the NHS calculator has you at BMI 28 which is overweight, not obese and you would need to be under 10st 1 to be a healthy weight.

LillyPJ · 23/10/2025 22:58

rosierosierosie · 23/10/2025 22:02

Absolutely not, they use that language to shame people.

What language do you think they should use? I don't think it's used to shame people when it's used in a medical setting.

You did the calculation wrong. I just did it and you are overweight not obese.

Well, no. In that photo you definitely don't look obese. But at your height weighing over 11 stone is pretty heavy. Maybe the scales are faulty?

Irenesortof · 23/10/2025 23:01

You look fine to me, but so do a lot of people classified as obese. But hang on, you're not one of them. Your weight is just tipping into 'overweight'. You're not calssified as obese.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 23/10/2025 23:03

Is that 4 dogs I count ?

If so, you are as mad as me :)

That is very heavy for your height.

The photo looks ok but your arms are crossed and your clothes are baggy. I think you might be kidding yourself.

I am same height, 9 stone and look fine with clothes on but definitely look overweight with clothes off. So, at over 11st I would say you are obese (unless you are work out a lot & are muscular).

Otterdrunk · 23/10/2025 23:08

No not obese imo. But I’m interested in the many dogs in your picture! Have you got 4?!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/10/2025 23:09

To me, obese means Very Fat! - so no, I certainly don’t think you are.

Peclet · 23/10/2025 23:10

I think you look fine, but what is your metabolic age? Are you active and healthy in your habits?

Can you get down into a low squat and stay there for 45 seconds. Feet flat on the floor? Can you balance on one leg for one minute? Can you sit on the floor and get up unaided? Could you run, and I do mean run for 45 seconds.

If you have a tape measure you can measure your body fat percentage. This is more accurate.

circumference of neck, waist, your height, age gender and weight. Look it up online. If you have a fat mass of more than…I think 30% then that’s not great.

both my parents and many of my extended family died way before they ought to have from inactivity and poor diet.

LBFseBrom · 23/10/2025 23:12

You don't look obese in that photo. You are most likely somewhat overweight but you can deal with that.

neverevergonnaeatkale · 23/10/2025 23:15

its probably been said already but the NHS BMI calculator puts you at overweight, not obese? Your BMI is 28.
I’m 5’4” and 11st2. I’m definitely overweight. I’d need to lose at least half a stone to be back in the healthy weight category and not look chubby.

Why are you saying you’re obese?

5128gap · 23/10/2025 23:16

You look like an inverted triangle/apple body shape with lovely long slim legs. You are dressed to suit your shape and in that photograph don't look what most people think of when they hear the word obese. In other words, you carry it well, and look good on it.
However, as people have said, obese isn't a term to describe your appearance its a medical term to give you an indicator of health. Having a BMI in the obese category and carrying it on your middle is a red flag for all sorts of future nasties and you probably shouldn't let the fact you look good delude you about that.
