So apparently I’m obese according to the NHS website. I definitely have a belly but I don’t feel obese! What do you think? I’m worried I’m deluded!

No you don't. Your BMI is hardly above the recommended which is 25 I think.

letmehaveathink · 24/10/2025 09:53

I'm struggling to lose more. I'd love to get into the 10's. Going to be on a beach very soon, which is why I am a bit fixated on this!

If you want to lose weight for health reasons then using BMI makes sense (because yes, it's not infallible but it is a good indicator of health risks for most people).

If you want to lose weight for beauty reasons then surely it makes more sense to focus on dress size or something similar.

Oh wow - the first sentence is a problem and probably the second, too. Likely a reason why so many of us are pending health disaster.

Edited

People generally know if they’re overweight and that they could do with losing some via healthy eating and exercise. My point is, you don’t need a label to know that. As in the OP’s case, it can then cause distress and quite possibly could lead to an unhealthy relationship towards food.

noworklifebalance · 24/10/2025 10:28

ChersHeart · 24/10/2025 09:49

@noworklifebalance , why are they a problem? The OP isn't obese.

The “look obese or feel obese” bit - we are so skewed into accepting being overweight as normal weight etc plus vanity sizing that most people no longer know what normal weight/physique should be. Looking & feeling is not the way to decide if you are overweight or obese. I mean this purely for health reasons not fashion or beauty.

Ozgirl76 · 24/10/2025 10:30

I’m actually not sure people DO know they’re overweight if it isn’t loads. I know I was in denial that a roll around my middle was normal and that my thighs rubbing was just one of those things. It was when I lost the weight and felt so significantly better that I realised what a difference it made. It’s boiling a frog right, you don’t necessarily realise how much better you will feel a bit lighter.

I disagree and, unfortunately, there are a lot more obese children around and parents who dismiss it as puppy fat or think that a bit of weight = healthy well fed child.

Agree with all of this.

Obese is a lot skinnier than we think. Media portrays obese people like the they are apart of My 600lbs life. Where as reality is that lower end of obesity is not drastically different from overweight. We often think mobility scooters where as obese people can run marathons. This is coming from an obese person who just slipped into 'overweight' category.

ChersHeart · 24/10/2025 10:54

@ReyRey12 , Obese is a lot skinnier than we think. isn't skinny at all. It's the opposite.

OK fine. Could have said thinner or weighing less or looking not as fat or whatever. But message is clear so I'll stick with it 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheJessops · 24/10/2025 11:07

I'm 5ft 4, I vary between 58-62kg depending on time of year, time of month etc etc.. But 60kg + I have some smart scales that call me chubby! I'm a size 10-12! Chubby?! Those scales are wankers, I've stopped negotiating with them. 😆

You absolutely do not look obese.

What is your issue or are you just trolling now?

agreed, because on any given day you are only ever marginally fatter than you were yesterday. It creeps up on people.

mcmooberry · 24/10/2025 11:14

No and your dogs look nice healthy weights too.

henlake7 · 24/10/2025 11:17

Id say the OP was maybe in the overweight catagory but not obese (besides they must be quite fit with all the dog walking!).

BMI is good for a general indicator of where you are but it is pretty fecked for a more specific view. Im 5'5 and a size 8/10 and Im only a few pounds off of being in the overweight catagory! I do alot of exercise so Im quite 'dense' though.😁
I think body condition and muscle tone is a much better indicator of health.

Also us middle aged women are screwed when it comes to waist measurements so we often register as being overweight just because a lack of hormones has made us thicken around the middle....so unfair!

Jackiepumpkinhead · 24/10/2025 11:22

You absolutely do not look obese or even overweight! But your weight is heavy for your height. I am also 5ft 3in.

ChersHeart · 24/10/2025 11:26

@TheJessops , I'm 5ft 4, I vary between 58-62kg ... I'm a size 10-12! Chubby?!
I'd be uncomfortable at 58kg. It's too heavy for my frame, but it's within the normal BMI range.
The dress size doesn't mean anything.

Itiswhysofew · 24/10/2025 11:27

If you're considered obese, we're in trouble😞 You have a small frame.

nomas · 24/10/2025 11:28

I'm a similar size to you OP (12) and I have weight related issues. I think obesity isn't just what you on TV like The Biggest Losers etc, it's being much heavier than your body can deal with.

ChersHeart · 24/10/2025 11:28

I think you meant 'less fat' not skinnier or thinner, @ReyRey12 , but I agree that people's perception is that obese means something different to the general public.

DiscoBob · 24/10/2025 11:29

I don't think you look obese no. Not even that overweight. But I guess your clothes are kind of baggy.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 24/10/2025 11:33

letmehaveathink · 23/10/2025 21:47

I’m 5ft 3 and 11 stone 4 pounds. I know I’m a bit heavy, but fuck me, obese seems harsh! But I don’t know if I’m deluded

I'm 5'1" and 8 stone and I am not skinny and have a tummy.

I am the same height and weight as you and I am overweight. As I mentioned previously, I look slim in clothes but am fat (in all the wrong places) when naked.
I can fit into size 8 or 10 clothes in most shops but 20 years ago, at my current size, I probably would have been a 16 or 18, I reckon.
