To really miss traditional ghost story movies?

Im a fan of horror but to me, the best films don’t rely on OTT monsters, demons, explosions and special effects - they rely on a good story and clever writing.

Why don’t they do proper ghost stories anymore? Horror films these days are shite - the conjuring etc 😴 all the same.

Give me The Sixth Sense or The Others any day.

AIBU to think the horror genre is missing clever writing? No special effects needed if you can actually tell a good spooky story

I have been haunted by the old Woman in Black for decades. She is hands down the most scary female. My 14 year old self was not happy watching this alone, I honestly had no idea what I was letting myself in for when I turned the telly on and happened upon it. I remember watching it upstairs in my aunts very creepy 16th century pub in a room upstairs whilst the adults were propping up the bar downstairs. I was literally frozen.

So beware. I think it's much scarier that the Daniel R version.

My DB still has the old videotape of its original broadcast from nineteen eighty nine We had to tape it that Christmas Eve as we were going to midnight mass

I think The Ring is actually a very good ghost story. There’s nothing gory in it and although people die you don’t really see any murders. You do see a body at the start.
I prefer the American version as it tells the back story better. I think it highlights the sadness, which is always the undercurrent of the best ghost stories I think.

Can recommend The Ring book series by Koji Suzuki if anyone wants a good read. I really enjoyed them.

Agree. I'd like to rewatch The Others as I've only seen it once, but couldn't find it anywhere.

It’s on iplayer right now. Just rewatched. So clever and genuinely terrifying

I saw Ghost Watch and I was traumatised. I loved Halloween and celebrated every year but after Ghost Watch it completely ruined it. I was shaking. Most likely PTSD I wanted to go to the GP for help. I haven't seen it since. I might actually faint if I did. I loved the Black Phone however but not really the Black Phone 2 it was a gimmick

What did everyone think of The Room in the Tower?

We still have a red wine stain on our sofa from one particular jump scare 😂.

Im a big scaredy cat so it terrified me, but in the best way. I also was infinitely more emotionally engaged with the characters and their stories because of the series format, which made it so much more impactful.

Was that the scene in the car? If so I’ve got a matching stain on mine!

I was very disappointed, the connection between the main character and his friend’s mother was never explained
