To be really worried about ASD DD in mainstream primary school

Today we had an incident at pick up and it’s worried me sick. As most of you probably know from reception pick up, the teachers let out one child at a time when they see their parent / carer. DD is a runner, no danger awareness no matter how many times I tell her. I’m waiting to pick DD up and she darts round everyone, including the teacher, bolts straight towards me. I don’t know how to react, I don’t want to upset DD by telling her off as soon as she see’s me, I politely tell her she should wait her turn (she’s highly touchy after school and prone to meltdowns) Shortly after as I was going to leave, DD’s teacher approaches me to tell me she must wait her turn, how unsafe it is etc. I explained I have trouble with her running off. That was that, but now I’m worried that this was able to happen in the first place ? They surely know what DD is like, so should they have something put into place?

Did the teacher see her run?
I'm not sure what else the teacher could do tbh?

You admit she's a runner, you were there so likelihood is she ran to you.

I can't see what else they can do. Physically stopping her would be more dangerous.

I don't think that talking to her politely is the right way to go when there is danger involved. I would deploy the raised voice and tell her off. Needs to make an impact.

Mrsnothingthanks · 22/10/2025 19:51

@Apple52 Does she have a Social Story surrounding this, OP?

Mrsnothingthanks · 22/10/2025 19:52

@Ablondiebutagoody A raised voice isn't helpful for a child with ASD - in fact, likely to make matters worse.

I'm also not sure what else the teacher could have done. Do you need pick up directly from the office instead of with the rest of the class? Is the playground secure?
