I had my thyroid surgery at 9am. I was in surgery for 7 hours, it was very difficult and stuck down to basically everything. I’ve also had a neck dissection where they have removed 40 lymph nodes because I have metastatic melanoma.

since 5pm on the ward my throat has been agony, I’ve also been ‘oozing’ fluid from the wound which I creasing pain. I’m on oxygen too. I have a drain with zero output

2 hours ago my lovely lovely nurse gave me iv paracetamol and asked the day ent if I could have my blood thinning injection, he said yes, went home and she gave it (God that mo fo burns)!

For 2 hours it has been really hard to get a deep breath or swallow, so I told the nurse and to her credit when she saw my buzzer go off she called the night ent guy and gave me some oramorph.

Night ENT dr has said I need an urgent new drain as the fluid is now building up in my wound, it’s also actively bleeding underneath the wound into my neck (because of the blood thinner).

I need to have some TXA (tranexamic acid) to help stop the bleeding, then a new drain but they want my air way protected so I have to go back to theatres for it as the swelling is a bit much, currently I have no dressing on to try and encourage as much of it to come out as possible whilst simultaneously not bleeding everywhere Oh and I need to walk around to try not to get a blood clot

All my people are asleep and I feel very alone and a bit scared. I’ve got my massive bag of fun shit that I packed and I’m very grateful for those suggestions!

Bloody hell (literally).
Big big hugs and well done. Onwards and upwards!!

DixiePeach · 22/10/2025 20:40

Just read this thread and felt the need to send you a virtual hug. My god what a time you’ve had. It sounds like you are through the worst. I hope you’re managing to get some rest now. Take care.

SewingBees · 22/10/2025 20:42

😲 That all sounds awful and very scary, I hope you're on the mend now xx

Dandelionsand4leafclover · 22/10/2025 21:30

Wow OP that sounds like a horrific ordeal. Hope you start to feel better soon. xx

27pilates · 22/10/2025 21:33

Omg OP. You’ve been through the mill. I hope they keep you on ITU for a good few days before you go back to that ward after what you’ve been through. You need the 2:1 or 1:1 care. You sound so stoical. Lots of love xx

Fernticket · 22/10/2025 21:39

Sending you love, hugs and prayers for a speedy recovery OP.💐

I’m still In icu, I’ve been moved to a side room because I’m the only one awake and it isn’t really appropriate for me to be awake around other sicker people. I think I’ll be moved to hdu tomorrow but I’m here for the foreseeable. I’m knackered. It’s been an ordeal. DH came In before work and then after work, he looks absolutely exhausted bless him. Then my mum turned up in a break of her day but forgot to take her dog collar off (vicar) and the staff thought she was the hospital chaplain 🤣 she bought me some nice food from the M&S shop in the hospital, amazing what some watermelon can do for your mental health!!

Wow, what a rollercoaster ride! When I had my thyroidectomy (which had to be abandoned mid op because the surgeon accidentally cut through a vocal cord) I could barely think for 24 hours, never mind write such amazing posts!

Well done and hope you are much better soon.

HoppityBun · 22/10/2025 22:03

I’ve only just seen this. ItIt’s grim for you. I’ll be awake on and off during the night and I promise I’ll be thinking of you xx

tartyflette · 22/10/2025 22:05

I hope you're feeling a bit better now ByeBye, watermelon is lovely, very soothing, juicy and easy to swallow, ask for some more tomorrow!
Your Mum sounds lovely. 🍉

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 22/10/2025 22:11

Goodness, what a nightmare that all turned out to be.
I hope things start to improve soon.

Oh my!
You’ve certainly been through the mill!
You sound a lot better in your last update which is good, may you continue to make good progress back to being 100% and well enough to go home xx

limetrees32 · 22/10/2025 22:19

You're obviously medically trained doctor? nurse ?I wonder whether having medical knowledge makes it worse or better?
I googled sepsis induced DIC but was unable to work out if blood thinners would have made it worse or better !!
It's obviously a very serious liver threatening condition.
And on top of your melanoma spread..
It's it hard being a patient in a hospital you work in ?
Would you rather be an inpatient elsewhere ?
Here's to a better night and some rest.

27pilates · 22/10/2025 22:20

Hopefully you’ve got a window and TV too in this ITU room. Keep strong OP. X

Dr, I work in theatres (surgeon) so I don’t actually know the staff in icu properly but I know them enough! I know the anaesthetic drs and it’s very hard being where you work! I wish I’d been able to go to the other hospital in th trust where u lm based. But sadly not to be, I seem to wake up really quickly from anaesthetic as though I haven’t had anything it’s very bizarre! It’s nice to have colleagues pop in but equally I’d like to be more anonymous!

Goodness yes, several layers to add to that already surreal and uncomfortable experience of being an inpatient.
And that's without all the sudden trauma that befell you .
I do hope you can get some sleep.
I sometimes find that holding my own hand( literally) helps!
What odd things we human beings are !

SpicedPumpkins · 28/10/2025 12:15

Hope you’re doing ok! Thinking of you OP ❤
