I had my thyroid surgery at 9am. I was in surgery for 7 hours, it was very difficult and stuck down to basically everything. I’ve also had a neck dissection where they have removed 40 lymph nodes because I have metastatic melanoma.

since 5pm on the ward my throat has been agony, I’ve also been ‘oozing’ fluid from the wound which I creasing pain. I’m on oxygen too. I have a drain with zero output

2 hours ago my lovely lovely nurse gave me iv paracetamol and asked the day ent if I could have my blood thinning injection, he said yes, went home and she gave it (God that mo fo burns)!

For 2 hours it has been really hard to get a deep breath or swallow, so I told the nurse and to her credit when she saw my buzzer go off she called the night ent guy and gave me some oramorph.

Night ENT dr has said I need an urgent new drain as the fluid is now building up in my wound, it’s also actively bleeding underneath the wound into my neck (because of the blood thinner).

I need to have some TXA (tranexamic acid) to help stop the bleeding, then a new drain but they want my air way protected so I have to go back to theatres for it as the swelling is a bit much, currently I have no dressing on to try and encourage as much of it to come out as possible whilst simultaneously not bleeding everywhere Oh and I need to walk around to try not to get a blood clot

All my people are asleep and I feel very alone and a bit scared. I’ve got my massive bag of fun shit that I packed and I’m very grateful for those suggestions!

A handhold from me too! I possibly have surgery tomorrow, and can relate to how scary it is to be in pain, and to be feeling vulnerable. Really hope you recover well from it all, and you can get some really good pain relief.

CheshireDing · 21/10/2025 05:14

Hope you're feeling a bit better now OP.

Nestingbirds · 21/10/2025 05:50

You poor love. You feel tearful because you are in so much pain and alone in the night. Of course you are scared. Take a deep breath and remember you are in the best place with professionals that can keep you well.

You hsve been so brave.

@ByeByeThyroid oh my days that sounds like a absolute nightmare!!! How are you feeling now

ByeByeThyroid · 21/10/2025 06:17

It worked. I was given a GA, and taken to hdu after theatres, to make sure it actually worked. Managed to drain off enough that I can go back to my original ward after drs hand over. Thank you for being there for me when I really did feel so alone. I didn’t post earlier because frankly none of it would have made much sense at all!!

It's so hard having to advocate for yourself as well as deal with the effects of your operation. You don't sound at all pathetic. On the contrary you sound very brave. I'm reaching my hand out and hope your surgery has gone well.

Birdsongsingingagainandagain · 21/10/2025 08:02

Great news! Hope your recovery goes smoothly from now on!

ByeByeThyroid · 22/10/2025 01:54

Well that took a turn for the unexpected! Had to go back to theatre at 9pm. Just got back on the ward. I had a massive haemorrhage into the wound and they were thinking I’d need a tracheotomy. Turns out I’m hyper sensitive to blood thinners and need an investigation into wtf happened but after my tea time dose of dexaparin I just bled and bled and bled. Platelets were 20, it bypassed the drain and I was bleeding into my neck compromising my airway and had an emergency dash to theatre again to completely open up the wound, flush out the haematoma and they drained 300ml of blood from my neck.

had 2 units of blood and platelets.

they’re now investigating for leukaemia but right now all is settled.
