The Sullivans and sons and daughters.

And crossroads lol

GentleSheep · 20/10/2025 23:13

There was no day time TV when I was a kid, programmes didn't start till about 4 pm. I would have magazines to read if I was up to it, or books. Don't recall Mum watching any TV till the evenings, she was always so busy!

If I was poorly enough to be off school, I was expected to be in bed, preferably asleep, whilst waiting for a house call from the doctor.

Only three instances come to mind. One was a nasal haemorrhage which resulted in a stay in one of the big London hospitals, the second was a severe kidney infection (nearly a whole week off for that) and the third was bronchitis. Mother was reluctant to call the doc for the bronchitis, but I narrowly escaped hospital for that one.

Unless we were half dead, we went to school.

Just watched that Paul Shane clip @Bladderpool . A very unique version i'd say 😂

In the 80s there was a lunchtime show which was just a woman doing an oil painting everyday and you just watched her paint? I feel like it was called “painting with Nancy” or something. I actually used to be quite transfixed by it.

Paint along with Nancy! I’d forgotten this until you mentioned it.

Stigsmother · 20/10/2025 23:19

The Onedin Line, my mum fancied the leading man, yes, I am very very old 😬

Endofyear · 20/10/2025 23:23

Pebble Mill! So dull 🤣

Sons and daughters
Love and laughter
Tears of sadness and happinesssssssssss...
We will find out
Our sons and daughters
Are what, we too, were once aboutttttttttt....

Yes I would watch this too.

If I remember rightly, the evil blonde fetched up in either Flying Doctors or A Country Practice as well. Can't tell the difference, other than one had a wombat in the title sequence and the other didn't.

I didn't mind The Sullivans at all for some reason and Crown Court was a very rare thing to catch as I think it might have clashed with something else she thought was more appropriate - although all of these got abandoned if there was a chance of seeing Bagpuss, Fingermouse, Bod or Mr Benn again.

Oh, and there is a very vague memory of watching Michael Bentine's Potty Time when I was very, very small, with a battlefield model complete with miniature explosions in the sand. Although this could be a literal fever dream.

I remember watching Take the High Road one afternoon whilst eating Chewits. There was a scene where an older lady (I bet she’d have only been about 40) was walking across a field and stood in a cow pat. The camera zoomed right in on her foot. It made me feel sick and has put me off Chewits for life.

There was no daytime telly when I was a little girl.

Even in the 1970s, when I was a teenager, TV didn't start broadcasting till 4pm.

I was a small child in the 70s and there was definitely daytime TV - my mum always watched the lunchtime news and Pebble Mill in the afternoon!

CherryPinkAppleBlossomWhite · 20/10/2025 23:29

A Sharp Intake of Breath...alleged "comedy" starring a before he was famous David Jason. Also Pebble Mill (or Pebble Mill At One as it was called then).

GingersOwner26 · 20/10/2025 23:30

I was stuck with the news!

JackandSallySkellington · 20/10/2025 23:31

Doctors and Heartbeat always came on when I was off sick

A lot of the Sons and Daughters cast ended up in either Neighbours or Home and Away over the years!

DoAWheelie · 20/10/2025 23:32

I was a good kid who never faked sickness so I would be allowed to play video games all day when I was ill. I have some sensory issues and being ill would trigger a lot of them so having something engaging as a distraction was a big help.

I remember one evening celebrating finally finishing a game I'd been trying to beat for months and months after a day off school, and promptly puking all over the living room after turning it off as it was no longer distracting me from the nausea.

I think it was the original sonic the hedgehog game but it might have been sonic 2.

Anoone · 20/10/2025 23:43

Eldorado!

Lucienandjean · 20/10/2025 23:47

Pebble Mill, which seems to be a popular answer here!

And even earlier, The Galloping Gourmet. So so boring to a small child.

Going for Gold

I was just coming on to say this! As soon as I read the thread title the theme tune popped into my head 😂

User4532456734 · 21/10/2025 00:14

Pigeon St on BBC2 at about 1:30pm then we’d have to be dead fast switching to BBC1 to catch the lunchtime edition of Neighbours. If I was at school my mum would watch the lunchtime news so watching Pigeon St was a treat!

Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)

The original version, I was plagued by tonsilitis as a child and missed a lot of school, I remember this being on all the time.

garlictwist · 21/10/2025 00:20

I used to love Going for Gold. Let’s face it, intellectually it was pretty well pitched for an eight year old.

mondaytosunday · 21/10/2025 00:34

My parents would never ‘make’ me watch TV! Anyway there was only horse racing on during the day as far as I remember.

justasking111 · 21/10/2025 00:36

Straight to bed. Was allowed to read. But mostly slept. Recurrent tonsillitis pretty poorly
