What TV programme as favourites of your parents did they make you watch off sick

OP posts:

The Sullivans had some syrupy piano theme tune that I can't forget to this day...

Crown Court had an opening theme tune that scared me (Janacek's Sinfonietta) and an end theme tune that made me want to cry (Distant Hills by Simon Park...).

The Crossroads theme also made me feel sad. God, I was a wimpy kid...

I mainly went to my Nan and grandads. My Nan would put Sesame Street on and make us dance to all the songs, then my grandad would shout at prime minister’s questions. Then we’d all sit in their tiny kitchen and he’d cook me a “nanny’s dinner” (reheated stew made out of the Sunday roast leftovers - delicious). My Nan would give me strawberry jelly for pudding. Then my grandad would probably write a strongly worded letter to the local paper. It was lovely actually. :)

I know it wasn’t your question but you got me all nostalgic.

As I child I always wanted to know why it was called “Pebble Mill”. Where were the pebbles? where was the mill? The title promised so much yet it delivered so little.

🤣🤣🤣
It was just up the road from us in Birmingham.

Sons and daughters- can still sing the theme. Take the high road was dull too and pebble bloody mill. I used to love it when you could watch the schools programming especially how we used to live- it was my favourite. There was also a weird kids show with puppets at a market. Can't remember what it was called but I absolutely hated it

You and Me

Movingtodarkestperu · 20/10/2025 21:22

You and me with cosmo and dibs. I googled 80s kids show with puppets at a market. The Internet is bloody marvellous 🤣🤣

CuddlesKovinsky · 20/10/2025 21:23

Pebble Mill looked like it was filmed in a lobby - and yes, I also wondered what the pebbles had to do with it...

I just googled. It WAS filmed in the lobby as they didnt build a planned 3rd studio. The Internet is bloody marvellous 🤣🤣

Dizzywizz · 20/10/2025 21:26

I LOVED cosmo and dibs!!!

Pebble mill. Hated it.

This. To be fair, it was more what was actually on in the daytime before we finally got a VHS and could watch something I actually chose.

Paint along with Nancy! I remember it.

Crown Court always seemed to be on at lunchtime when I was off school.

Oh yes I have just found it on YouTube, wow!

I was quite a precociously talented artist as a child and I am sure Nancy had a lot to do it! Haven’t lifted a paintbrush for years, I should probably re-watch!

CoffeeAndCakeBringMeJoy · 20/10/2025 21:33

Also Pebble Mill, The Sullivan, Sons and Daughters and Going for Gold - we’re definitely of a similar age here! Also enjoyed the nostalgia of watching the pre-school programmes I had loved before starting school, especially Play School, Chock A Block, Postman Pat, Bagpuss, Rainbow and Cockleshell Bay.

The thrill of being able to watch the lunch time episode of Neighbours!

I had an extended period of illness at about age 11, and my Mum and I used to watch early afternoon repeats of Ironside and Quincy M.E. - doubt I ever would have watched those if I hadn’t been ill at that time.

Nevermeever · 20/10/2025 21:33

Flying doctors, Richard and Judy, Kilroy, crossroads, sons and Daughters, murder She Wrote… happy days, often with my Nan

Not much daytime TV when I was at primary. The only excuse for me having time off was when I was literally dying. Even then I think my mother would have wheeled my coffin into the classroom 😆

Bladderpool · 20/10/2025 21:44

The absolute worst were Hadleigh and The Cedar Tree. I’ve no idea what the premise of either of these shows was, just that they were unbelievably tedious and always on my telly on sick days.

Farmhouse Kitchen was a blessed relief from the borefest.

GloriousRain · 20/10/2025 21:45

Oh another one I’ve remembered, Highway to Heaven, although I didn’t hate that really lol

scandinavianyellow · 20/10/2025 21:47

What even was take the high road? Was it summer bay in Scotland?

MoiraRoseVibes · 20/10/2025 21:48

Oh my god Pebble Mill! What a load of rubbish that was.
I can still remember the Sons and Daughters theme tune even though I only ever watched it when off sick!

Nancy Kominsky.

My mum had all her books and we still have some of the paintings she did proudly displayed on the walls!

I have "Snow In Central Park" and "Rain In London" :-)

Take The High Road (later just High Road) was a Scottish soap set in a fictional highland village called Glendarroch. It was actually filmed in Luss on Loch Lomond. It started off very twee and pretty uneventful but got a sexy reboot and started having plots about affairs and murders. I actually quite liked it, the interiors were filmed in a studio in Leith, near my office in the 90s, the cast used to walk past my window at lunchtime.
