Is panelling nice or just “Chavvy”?

Diy322 · 19/10/2025 13:03

Just read a post online where someone said panelling is “chavvy”! I’m a little upset as I was planning to panel my hallway.

It’s a new build but I just feel the hallway needs something. Hallway is quite large. What do others think? Please be honest

Why do you need someone else to tell you one way or the other?

DepressingRead · 19/10/2025 14:48

Just don’t do what my previous house owners did, which was to glue thin wooden strips (like you get in b&q) to the wall in rectangular shapes and paint over the lot!

The ‘panelling’ wasn’t even straight, as they’d eyeballed it god bless em’! 😅 Thankfully was just in a few rooms, not the whole house

Just do what you want instead of following what rubbish people are sprouting online. These statements are made about a lot of things by people trying to get the right hashtags so they can get views and shares online in their bid to become a social media influencer.

I'm old enough to remember the last time panelling was in fashion.
It dated so quickly as fashion moved on was an absolute nightmare to remove often leaving the walls needing replanted and locked £0000s off house valuations and was a massive fire hazard.
Don't do it

It's glued on now much less damage.

It's so practical if you have young children and dogs 🙈

@Naws come on! Of course I don’t want something in my home which is co dusted chavvy! I don’t know that’s why I’m asking! It’s something that will cost a lot of money for need to do my research,

  1. doesn't have to cost a lot, in fact not sure what would cost a lot to put some panelling in and
  2. do you like it? Yes: do it No : don't do it

Naff. Really naff thing to do to your house.

Yeah this. ^ It's the new Vera Duckworth stone cladding! 😬

A woman I used to know had stone cladding put up, all over the front and one side of her 4 bed detached house in the mid 1980s, to try and make her late 1970s house look a bit 'upmarket.' It looks awful. 😬

The value of the house was reduced dramatically, and she couldn't sell it 3 years later when her circumstances changed and she wanted to sell.

It took 3 x more money to remove the stone cladding than it cost to put up! Left her badly out of pocket! It's classed as one of the biggest faux pas ever when it comes to people doing stuff to their houses. I think the modern trend to put panelling up is going down that road!!!

ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit · 19/10/2025 14:52

I do think panelling has been done to death is recent years and we’re due to move on soon 🤞🏻
Nice artwork and paint can go a long way. Also might be worth finding an interior designer you like, I used one for a few rooms I was lacking inspiration on and was great, plus they had a deal with a local paint and paper shop so got a hefty discount which made her fee much cheaper. She had some ideas I hadn’t thought of at all.

The OP asked a question, and asked peoples opinions. People are giving them. Wind yer neck in.

Hasn't dated in 800 years. I think not.

Real oak panelling hasn’t dated. MDF panelling in non period homes most certainly has.

Ginmonkeyagain · 19/10/2025 14:57

Does a hallway have to be interesting? We just have some pictures on the wall, a small wooden unit that I made that holds shoes and the letter rack and the recycling box. We did use some dead space to add a moving wall with storage and a coat rack behind it.

I grew up in a 16th century farm house, some of the rooms had wooden tongue and groove panelling (mainly to hide lumpy and badly plastered walls). My parents laothed it as it was a faff to paint and keep dust free

Sooose · 19/10/2025 14:58

You could do quite a lot with plants, some large ones, especially if there's a lot of light.

rwalker · 19/10/2025 15:00

Anaglypta wallpaper do some of the traditional wallpaper panels
So nothing structural to repair when you’ve had enough of it

Sugarfish · 19/10/2025 15:00

If you like it op then go for it.

Personally I don’t like panelling. Or the picture you uploaded. I don’t think it looks chavvy, it’s just not an aesthetic that appeals to me.

But you don’t have to agree with my opinion, because that’s all it is. And I have no authority on home decor.

I have metro tiles in my kitchen, which I’ve also seen described as chavvy. But I love them.

rwalker · 19/10/2025 15:01

Don’t think pictures attached

As someone who lives in a terraced house and neighbour put panelling up on our joining wall, I hate it. Every step can be heard as a bang in that room (they also have laminate flooring) and it's made the room very live, I can hear their conversations.

Metro tiles are lovely! When did they become chavvy?

We have panelling in our daughters room, and the living room, I don’t think it’s chavvy but it’s a personal opinion and who cares what others think

My partner did it himself

Mumstheword1983 · 19/10/2025 15:03

MelonElla · 19/10/2025 13:04

I wouldn't say it's chavvy but it is very popular and will probably date quickly.

This

EatMoreChocolate44 · 19/10/2025 15:04

I think it's a classic look. Warm and rich. I guess it's all in the colour, wallpaper, carpet etc. Definitely not chavvy in my opinion. 🤷

ScrewyouJonathon · 19/10/2025 15:07

Not chavvy just very very common every other IG page seems to have the same ubiquitous house - panelling, shaker kitchen usually cream or grey, herringbone wood floor. If you don't mind that (why should you) then go for it.

PenguinLover24 · 19/10/2025 15:08

Do what you want it's your house! I am one of those grey house people that everyone slags off and I couldn't care less 😂 my entire house is different shades of grey and white apart from my wee girls room which is baby pink but it's because colour give me migraines and makes me feel on edge! I feel calm with these colours 😂

Growlybear83 · 19/10/2025 15:09

I think it depends on the house. In a Victorian or Edwardian house it would probably look nice, but I think it would look extremely chavvy in a modern house

Happyher · 19/10/2025 15:10

Get some home design magazines and see if you can find a look you like. You may see different panelling designs that you like that are more individual or original. It’s your house so go with what you like. I had a picture rail fitted because I like the look of it. I don’t care what anyone else things about it. Panelling is only strips of wood and can easily be removed when it’s time for a change. Go for it!

justasking111 · 19/10/2025 15:11

A friend has the original lincrusta in her hallway and up the stairs. With three boys and two dogs it a dream to wipe down. You can get wallpaper dupes now. That wouldn't do any damage.
